Press release :
Imagine Sun Ra & Albert Ayler leading a marching band on the set of 1970's cult horror flick 'The Wicker Man' and you might get close to the Tongues Of Fire sound!

Composer and band leader Tim Hill expertly fuses American jazz and English folk traditions into a hypnotic brew of unstoppable rhythms and roaring brass. This is a joyous noise!

'Smokin Jo Crow' is a percussive ode to a giant apocalyptic bird, with hints of gris gris era Dr John. The flip side, 'Washerwoman's Brawl' is based on a traditional Elizabethan dance updated for a 7 piece jazz band!

We've produced an illustrated, 8 page booklet to accompany this 7", written by Tim Hill to explain the wide range of influences, politics & philosophy behind his remarkable music. Limited to 300 copies only.

"If you were perhaps wondering what a British version of the Youngblood Brass Band might sound like then wonder no more because Tongues Of Fire are exactly that. Referencing the collective shamanic voodoo of Sun Ra and Albert Ayler’s mystical shrieks and shronks they fire up an unholy modal roustabout of a party: this is ruff and rugged stuff for the headz who love the leftfield boogaloo. Blindingly good and very limited indeed. 5/5" - IDJ Magazine April 07

Biography :
Tongues of Fire is a Victoria based poetry collective committed to the art of spoken word/performance poetry among other forms of literature. We are diverse in background, writing style and lifestyle. All of us are committed to writing in all forms.

Conceived in August 2005, Tongues of Fire birthed a monthly spoken word night @ Solstice Cafe in Victoria. The night began as an open mic and evolved to eventually include feature performers.

Now with the 2006 season, Tongues of Fire is planning to go bi-weekly, with a heavier emphasis on feature performers, while retaining the poetic open mic portion of the show.

Tongues of Fire happens on the 2nd & 4th Thursday of every month @ Solstice Cafe (529 Pandora Avenue).

Tongues of Fire is always looking for feature performers! If you are a performer planning on heading over this way, drop us an email or message us here.
