Comment le label indépendant Black Jazz a-t-il fait pour sortir des albums d'artistes de jazz inconnus et underground (et inversement), pendant toute la première moitié des années 70, sans s'écrouler -financièrement- à chaque nouvelle sortie? Le mystère se résoud bien vite: il suffit d'écouter cette compilation!
Les non-aficionados des vinyles obscurs n'auront sûrement peu ou pas entendu parler de The Awakening, Doug Carn, Calvin Keys, Roland Haynes, Walter Bishop Jnr., Rudolph Johnson, Henry Franklin ou Chester Thompson... et pourtant on ne saurait que trop conseiller cette réédition (la compile était déjà parue ne 1996) à tous les amateurs de jazz deeply soulful.
A la lisière des jazz funk/rhythm & blues traditionnels et d'expériences plus proches du free de Miles Davis, John Coltrane ou Charles Mingus, Black Jazz étaient les Ninja Tune du jazz des 70's, et chacun des tracks présents ici auraient sa place sur nos ondes FM, de Nova à FIP, les doigts dans le nez (passez-moi l'expression et une bonne bière).
