Speech Defect - Killin' Da Wack Shit
(limited edition japan only 12") No Cool Music/Handcuts Japan NCM010, 2006-10-16

Review :
In the vein of Ugly Duckling or People Under The Stairs class of new old school sunshine party hip hop comes Speech Defect, a trio of MCs (Mr Linus, Thage and Boogie B) and a DJ (DJ Prao-D) from Sweden. Their new album is out on Hancuts Records in Japan and they're looking for a distribution deal in Europe. I got my hands on his new 12 inch, a limited thing for Japan only, with two new tracks, instrumentals and a remix. The opener "Superfuture" is supposed to be the red hot hip hop/funk hybrid tearing the roof off, according to the few press reviews available, but in my humble opinion "Hang Up's feat. Abdominal" is the shit here. Starting with a slowed-down Marlena Shaw sample, the same one St Germain used repeadtly on his "Rose Rouge" track, "Hang Up's" is a driving funk'n'breakbeats piece... but it's remixed version is even better! Adding heavy-soul energy horn riffs to the original it's taking it into stepping hit-single territory, close to some of the best Beck mashed-up singles. One of the best hip hop things I've heard recently, it comes from Sweden and is only distributed in Japan. Be aware.

Tracklisting :
A1. Superfuture
A2. Hang Up's (feat. Abdominal)
A3. Superfuture (inst.)
B1. Hang up's Remix (feat. Abdominal)
B2. Hang up's (inst.)
B3. Hang up's Remix (inst.)

Info :
Speech Defect is and interesting crew out of Sweden who's sound is very much influenced by rare Funk grooves and B-Boy rhyme styles. If I had to compare them to somone, I'd say they rank up there with groups like Ugly Duckling, P.U.T.S, and Jurassic 5. This latest release, on No Cool Music/Handcuts delivers that signature formula along with a worthy guest appearance by MC Abdominal. Very nice stuff. Check em out. (from Vinyl Athletes blog)

Speech Debelle - Freedom Of Speech
(CD/LP/Digital) Big Dada Recordings BD193, 2012-02-06

Two years since winning the 2009 Mercury Music Prize for her debut album, Speech Therapy, and having ridden a rollercoaster through life since then, Speech Debelle is ready to drop her second collection of music. Entitled Freedom of Speech, the album sees Speech turning from introspection to stand up, face and engage with the world around her, spitting confident themes of revolution and love. A first taste of the album came in the aftermath of this summer's riots, when Speech reacted immediately, leaking the track Blaze Up A Fire, (also featuring Roots ManuvaRealism), a track about political revolution written months before. Now the build-up begins to the release of Freedom of Speech in early February 2012 with the free download of the track Studio Backpack Rap. From political to musical revolution, Speech describes the track as being "all about virtual instrumentation and an ode to KwesSpeech Therapy, while showcasing just one aspect of her remarkable new album.
