En 1997 Mr Scruff sort son premier album sur Pleasure Records, le maxi "Pigeon" chez Echo Drop, le maxi "Large Pies" chez Cup Of Tea, ce maxi "Is It Worth It?" chez Grand Central et pas moins de 8 remixes! La suite se passera chez Ninja Tune avec un premier single, "Chipmunk", début 2002: en un an, Mr Scruff fait donc le tour des principaux labels anglais à consonnance hip hop. C'est celui sorti chez Grand Central au mois de Juin qui nous intéresse ici, tout particulièrement car il s'agit du tout premier track vocal du Scruff, avec Spikey T au chant (Dj et MC anglais, membre de Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart, invité sur les albums de Tony D, Morcheeba, Mark Rae, Hydrofunk Records...). Si ce track, "Is It Worth It?", reste un fort sympathique moment de downbeat soul-jazz, accompagné de ses remixes en sauce trip-hop et dub, on lui préfèrera néanmoins le "How Sweet It Is" produit avec Mark Rae, avec Veba au chant, que l'on retrouvera par la suite sur de nombreuses références de Grand Central ou de Mr Scruff, plus trippé, plus hip hop... plus trip hop, en somme!
