Mumblin Jim... ce n'était pas le nom du groupe de Jack Nicholson dans le film "Psyched Out" de Dick Clark?? Oui mais ici il s'agit de Mumblin' Jim, un quatuor tout ce qu'il y a de plus standard (guitare, basse, batterie, claviers), qui a commencé à tourner à Toronto en 1993, mais qui fait partie intégrante depuis 1994 de la scène live de la Bay Area de San Francisco. L'origine canadienne explique probablement la présence de Kid Koala, invité à scratcher psychedelico-gentiment sur "17 Reasons". L'intégration californienne qui suivit peut, elle, expliquer la présence du touche-à-tout Dan "the Automator" Nakamura à la production de cet album, "Rainbow Connection", sorti en 1999. Mumblin' Jim y mixe une somme influences de bon goût (Stevie Wonder, Beastie Boys, Beck...), pour un résultat pop-funk pas novateur pour un sou mais néanmoins charmant. Un peu comme Ben Folds Five sans le côté Billy Joel...
