01. Don Armando's Second Avenue Rhumba Band - Goin' To A Showdown
(from 'Don Armando's Second Avenue Rhumba Band' LP, 1979 - Ze Records)
(Kaegi)

Tracklisting :
A1. Deputy Of Love
A2. Compliment Your Leading Lady
A3. Winter Love
B1. Goin' To A Showdown
B2. How To Handle A Woman
B3. I'm An Indian Too
B4. Para Ti / This Is Just For You

One of many August Darnell pre-Kid Creole side projects. This one contains the infamous 'Deputy Of Love', dancefloor killer with terrifying bass & piano. But also this self-cover of Aural Exciters' 'Goin To A Showdown', stunning mix of yippee-hay-hey bluegrass country and mutant disco. The legendary Fonda Rae is on the mike, Coati Mundi (as usual these days) is producing.

Executive Producer - August Darnell

kid creole latin music
02. Kid Creole And The Coconuts - Going Places (Zemix version)
(from 'Latin Music' 12", 1981 - Ze Records)
(Darnell)

Tracklisting :
A Going Places (Zemix version)
B1. Latin Music
B2. Musica Americana

This 'Zemix' goes into fuzzy guitars rock. But the caribbean beat is already here and the singing sounds Broadwayish. A pure early 80s New York track.

Producer - August Darnell

kid creole fresh fruit in foreign places
03. Kid Creole And The Coconuts - I Am
(from 'Fresh Fruit In Foreign Places' LP, 1981 - Ze Records)
(Hernandez)

Tracklisting :
A1. Going Places
A2. In The Jungle
A3. Animal Crackers
A4. I Stand Accused
A5. Latin Music
A6. Musica Americana
B1. I Am
B2. Schweinerei
B3. Gina, Gina
B4. With A Girl Like Mimi
B5. Table Manners
B6. Dear Addy

The connoisseurs agree: this is the best Kid Creole album - especially the b-side. August gives it all: latin, funk, reggae, rock, cabaret, some hip hop and disco… 'I Am' could have been five different songs, half an album. But no, Darnell and Coati Mundi decided to mix it all in less than four minutes. Enjoy!

Producer - August Darnell
Co-producer - Andy Hernandez

kid creole fresh maladie damour
04. Kid Creole And The Coconuts - Maladie d'Amour (Extended)
(from 12", 1980 - Antilles)
(Darnell/Hernandez)

Tracklisting :
A Maladie d'Amour (Ext.)
B Adnaloy

From Kid Creole's first album ('Off The Coast Of Me') comes this sweet bomb, evidence of Darnell's primary obsession: mixing big bands light jazz, caribbean beat and funky elements. That was the sound that made him famous (amongst musicians) via Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band.
This is the rare extended version, featuring horns intro, spanish guitar and crazy mixing with all instruments moving from quiet to loud for six delicious minutes.

Notes:
Producer - August Darnell

kid creole wise guy
05. Kid Creole And The Coconuts - Stool Pigeon
(from 'Wise Guy' LP a.k.a 'Tropical Gangsters' LP, 1982 - Ze Records)
(Darnell)

Tracklisting :
A1. Annie (I'm Not Your Daddy)
A2. I'm A Wonderful Thing, Baby
A3. Imitation
A4. I'm Corrupt
B1. Loving You Made A Fool Out Of Me
B2. Stool Pigeon
B3. The Love We Have
B4. No Fish Today

'Wise Guy' is the US version, 'Tropical Gangsters' the european version. This is when the guys met success. Three hit singles in a row, a couple of world tours with a crew of twenty-something. After that, things would change. Darnell, remaining a great songwriter and band leader, would be less adventurous in his productions.

Producer - August Darnell

kid creole stool pigeon
06. Kid Creole And The Coconuts - Double On Back
(from 'Stool Pigeon' 12", 1982 - Ze Records)

Tracklisting :
A Stool Pigeon
B Double On Back

Maan! 'Double On Back' is THE dope! How come a song like that never has been released except on this b-side (1)? Nobody knows. What is it? Latin rock? Disco billy? Nobody knows. Will it ever stops to shake booties? Nobody knows.
(1) And as a bonus track to 'Tropical Gangsters' CD.

Notes:
Producer - August Darnell

elbow bones
07. Elbow Bones And The Racketeers - A Night In New York (Extended)
(from 12", 1983 - EMI America Records)
(D.Clarkin/R.Rogers)

Tracklisting :
A A Night In New York (Ext.)
B Happy Times

From Darnell's Midas period, when everything he touched turned into gold, comes this soul disco tune with a 1940s taste. Huge hit when it came up, forgotten since, more than enjoyable today. The singer is Stephanie Fuller (who is she?) and Elbow Bones is… nobody! The whole band is an invention (check the phoney names on the LP 'New York At Dawn'). They really are August, his brother Stony Browder Jr (Dr Buzzard), Gichy Dan, Ron Rogers and Kid Creole's musicians.

Producer - August Darnell

The Charlie Calello Orchestra
08. The Charlie Calello Orchestra - Sing, Sing, Sing
(from 'Calello Serenade' LP, 1979 - Midsong)
(Louis Prima)

Tracklisting :
A1. Moonlight Serenade
A2. Sing, Sing, Sing
A3. Temptation
B1. Stardust
B2. In The Mood
B3. Opus One
B4. Skyliner

It was then hip to cover classical or jazz tunes to turn them into disco anthems for the clubs. Charlie Calello, who was the original arranger for Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, thus a great inspiration for the Darnell brothers, wanted his share of Walter Murphy's success and released this LP of golden classics from grandparents days. Let's quote Joe: “You probably never would have predicted that a reworking of Louis Prima's instrumental big band hit from the 40's, 'Sing, Sing, Sing', could be turned into a hit dance record, especially one that would get a room full of hundreds of gay men jumping up and down. But kids, when DJ Bob Miro would throw this sucker on at Fort Lauderdale's Backstreet t-dance, you'da thunk the roof was gonna blow off the joint. You haven't lived until you've watch drunken drag queens and bodybuilders trying to disco-Charleston to 'Sing, Sing, Sing'."

kid creole annie im not your daddy
09. Kid Creole And The Coconuts - Annie I'm Not Your Daddy (Remix)
(from 12", 1982 - Ze Records)
(Darnell)

Tracklisting :
A1. Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy (6:26)
B1. You Had No Intention (7:33)

Probably Kid Creole's biggest success. You may have heard it a thousand times, you're not bored. That's pure magic.
This is the 12" version, very similar to the album's, with the exception of the introduction: no more drums, only the organ. Anyway, since it's mixed here with the previous track, you won't know the difference!

Notes:
Producer - August Darnell

little coati mundi
10. Little Coati Mundi - Pharaoh (Can't Take It To The Grave)
(from 'The Former 12 Year Old Genius', 1983 - Virgin)
(Hernandez)

Tracklisting :
A1. Sey Hey!
A2. Oh! That Love Decision
A3. Beat Back The Bullies
A4. Como Esta Usted?
A5. Everybody's On An Ego Trip
B1. Prisoner Of My Principles
B2. Pharaoh (Can't Take It To The Grave)
B3. I'm Corrupt
B4. Hold On To That Lovely Lady
B5. Tropical Hot Dog Night

Let's get serious here. Coati Mundi is a genius, fantastic producer and massive song-writer! But he'll always be considered as Kid Creole's sidekick, a sort of pre-Bez with vibraphone-playing abilities. I'd like to know why he released so few music. This is his ONLY album (un-fuckin-believable) and it's purely amazing! Here you'll find effective tracks for the dancefloors, and also kinda avant-garde, almost psychedelic stuff - in a New York way, of course, like Kid Creole meets Talking Heads. This 'Pharoah' combines cold waves of over-the-top synths, aerial background vox, latin feeling and vocals sounding like a zoot Screamin' Jay Hawkins on coke. You can play it to your friends and tell them this is a new record from South America underground, they'll buy it.
