The third single from Fink's acclaimed "Distance & Time" album is "If Only," one of the most beautiful and touching moments from the record. In its original version nothing more than acoustic guitar and Fink's voice, it tells the classic story of a boy who doesn't feel he's cool enough (or enough of a bullshitter?) to get the girl he's dreaming of.
But when Fink handed the parts over to Ingrid Eto (otherwise known as Zero 7, who Fink supported on their sell out uk tour) they took this intimate gem and turned it into a perfect, self-effacing slice of electro-pop which builds and builds across its five minutes of play.
Fink was so enthused by their re-work he donned his own electronic alter-ego, Sideshow, to turn out a fantastic "Linear Dub" of their remix. To move from the original version of the tune to this spooky, spacious, sensuous dub is quite some journey and shows the artist's range of influence and eclectic talent.
The EP is finished off with a fantastic live version of the original tune recorded at the Red Roaster in Brighton – an appropriate location to round off the record when you consider the chorus: "I'd be right on the train/ Up to the town/ To take you out again.".
Fink is on one hell of a roll at the moment. A sold out Proms performance at the Royal Albert Hall with Nitin Sawhney, a sold out UK Tour, songwriting with US soul sophisticate John Legend for his forthcoming album, and next, extensive French and Dutch tours (dates below)
For now, though, focus on the simple beauty if his artistry. Marvellous stuff from a singer-songwriter-producer who seems capable of shaping his music however he wants to.
