DJ Food - A Dub Plate Of Food Vol.2

DJ Food A Dub Plate Of Food Vol 2
DJ Food - A Dub Plate Of Food Vol.2
(10"/CDS) Ninja Tune ZEN1090/ZENCDS90, 2000-02

Back at the hazy end of '95, before 'A Recipe for Disaster', Refried Food' and a thousand other mealy-mouthed, word associations on the palette came 'a dub plate of food'. This good excuse for a bad pun was a sampler for the up and coming DJ Food LP. As the new Food album release approaches, and with very little wordplay flying around the kitchen area, we thought we'd create a new volume to showcase the new LP, 'Kaleidoscope' and keep a bit of continuity seeing as it's been 5 years.

Press Release :
Back at the hazy end of '95, before 'A Recipe for Disaster', Refried Food' and a thousand other mealy-mouthed, word associations on the palette came 'a dub plate of food'. This good excuse for a bad pun was a sampler for the up and coming DJ Food LP.

As the new Food album release approaches, and with very little wordplay flying around the kitchen area, we thought we'd create a new volume to showcase the new LP, 'Kaleidoscope' and keep a bit of continuity seeing as it's been 5 years.

4 cuts, 2 from the LP and 2 exclusives, form the 'plates'. The first is a collaboration with 60's wordsmith and Chicago resident Ken Nordine, he of 'Colours' and 'Word Jazz' fame. For a full explanation of his long and checkered career check the up and coming web pages for the Food album at www.ninjatune.net. He weaves a tale of mystery and despair about a boy who wants to be different but has to go to extreme lengths to achieve it in 'this silly world'.

Flip over to side 2 and you're 'Cookin', thrown head first into some seriously full-on funk jam: faders fly, electronics surge and it all gets wound down by a preacher talking of "new ways, new forms... and new pleasures". The third course offers something a little easier on the palette, a(nother) version of 'The Crow', first featured on the 'Funkungfusion' compilation in '98, a rework is on the LP, but - this being the dub plate - features the ...'dub', only available here. Also exclusively only for this release is 'Tumbleweed', an invitation for TV and soundtrack work if ever we heard it.

Only a hint of culinary quotation but a lot to chew on.

Venezuela 70 - Cosmic Visions Of A Latin American Earth - Venezuelan Experimental Rock In The 1970s (CD/2LP, Soul Jazz, 2016)

English label Soul Jazz Records released this summer a collection of experimental rock recorded in Venezuela in the 1970s, at a time when oil was flowing in abundance and consequently culture rather well subsidized. However, this music had never really got out of the country until now, it's really a...
