Premier témoignage de la tournée "Broadway the Hard Way", "Best Band" présente une formation incroyablement homogène et un répertoire louchant du coté du jazz-rock. L'humour est omniprésent (voir les fabuleuses versions de "Purple Haze" ou du "Parrain"). On glisse facilement dans le reggae avec un "Stairway To Heaven" à hurler de rire ou un "Bolero" que les pseudo héritiers de Ravel (sa lingère, son chauffeur et son jardinier) ont réussi a faire interdire (ne le cherchez donc plus...). Le répertoire des Mothers n'est pas en reste avec de fulgurantes versions de "Penguin in Bondage", "Inca Road", "Who Needs the Peace Corps" ou encore "Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue". On sent toute la maîtrise d'une formation qui atteint ici une perfection d'exécution digne d'un orchestre classique, humour et décontraction en plus. Et Zappa devient le plus fabuleux chef d'orchestre du monde.
