Biography :
The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band was founded in 1963 by brothers Cyril and Lionel Bishop in Port of Spain. During the 60s and 70s they played the hotel and holdiay resort circuit in Trinidad and Tobago and recorded a couple of albums for local labels with the usual staple of Calypso and lounge classics. But at neighbourhood parties and family functions the Bacao Rythm & Steel Band played a different kind of set, influenced by the soul and funk sound from the USA. Similar to the 20th Century Steel Band and The Trinidad Esso Steel Band, who are known for their Stax and Motown covers ('Theme from Shaft', 'I Want You Back'), the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band played their own staple of downright funky tunes.

When Mocambo mastermind Bjˆrn Wagner visited Port of Spain during a holiday / digging trip two years ago, he got in touch with a steel band collector who turned out being a grand nephew of the Bishop brothers. Through this contact Wagner managed to track down the master tapes of some unreleased songs by the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, all recorded in heavy funk mode. Two songs from this session were released on Mocambo Records earlier this with a limited run of 300 copies.

The single sold out within days and caught the attention of Hawkeye who has re-edited "Ease Back" and "Look-A Py Py". We will release those edits on a 7" in early November. This time limited to 1.000 copies.

Press Release :

Speech Debelle - Freedom Of Speech
(CD/LP/Digital) Big Dada Recordings BD193, 2012-02-06

Two years since winning the 2009 Mercury Music Prize for her debut album, Speech Therapy, and having ridden a rollercoaster through life since then, Speech Debelle is ready to drop her second collection of music. Entitled Freedom of Speech, the album sees Speech turning from introspection to stand up, face and engage with the world around her, spitting confident themes of revolution and love. A first taste of the album came in the aftermath of this summer's riots, when Speech reacted immediately, leaking the track Blaze Up A Fire, (also featuring Roots ManuvaRealism), a track about political revolution written months before. Now the build-up begins to the release of Freedom of Speech in early February 2012 with the free download of the track Studio Backpack Rap. From political to musical revolution, Speech describes the track as being "all about virtual instrumentation and an ode to KwesSpeech Therapy, while showcasing just one aspect of her remarkable new album.
