"Over the past year the influence of Afro-beat and original 1970s funky Afro-fusion has steadily grown within the dance music world. From Masters At Work, Ron Trent, Joe Claussell, Blaze and Jephte Guillaume to Frederic Galliano, Faze Action and Soul Ascendants, Afro and it’s influence on worldwide dancefloors continues to grow. The trouble is, no one can get hold of the original material that has influenced all of these producers original vinyl is not just rare… it ain’t there!

So what better way to have launched the Strut label than with a killer original Afro-funk and Afro-beat collection brought to you by the people behind ‘Africafunk’. Compiled by the Jazz Room’s Russ Dewbury and featuring 12 funky beasts with the emphasis firmly on the dancefloor, ‘Club Africa’ is an essential for anyone who has been touched by this sound over the last few months."

Russ Dewbury Biography :
With the fledgling jazz dance scene based purely around London in 1986, Russ Dewbury was one of the UK's first DJs to focus on the powerful combination of jazz and latin, resurrecting lost classics for a whole new audience and supporting the newer emerging jazz and funk acts of the time. From his original decision to base his operations in Brighton, the rest is now history. Dewbury opened Brighton's legendary JAZZ ROOMS in 1987 and the club has since become the longest running of all UK jazz dance sessions. The JAZZ ROOMS has featured a who's who of international DJs and is consistently packed, attracting dancers from all over the country.

Russ Dewbury is also the man behind the successful Brighton JAZZ BOP events, the longest running live / DJ session of its kind anywhere in the world. Staged three times a year, the JAZZ BOP combines exclusive live European performances by cult US musicians with the scene's best new acts. Now in its 11th year, the JAZZ BOP regularly attracts 2000 dancers per session and has become an essential date in the Jazz calendar. Dewbury has organised debut UK performances for artists including Jon Lucien, Big John Patton, Charles Earland, Johnny Lytle, Bernard Purdie, Pucho, Jean Jacques Perrey, Reuben Wilson and Melvin Sparks. The JAZZ BOP has also featured Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers and Pharoah Sanders. It was the first UK jazz event to feature Terry Callier and Dewbury has since been highly instrumental in re-launching Callier's career. The Bop has also supported a host of new acts, many at an extremely early stage of their careers. These have included Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies, Spearhead and The Roots. Russ has also set up a successful Amsterdam JAZZ BOP in conjunction with Graham B.

Russ Dewbury was the man behind the BGP label (through Ace Records), one of the first jazz dance labels to bring the original classics to a whole new audience. Compiling albums from the vast catalogues of a number of prestigious US labels, Russ established a quality label of recycled nuggets and fresh compilations. The label has re-introduced artists such as Terry Callier, New Rotary Connection and Gary Bartz, establishing an essential position in contemporary club culture. Russ organised the infamous Fatboy Slim remix of Jean Jacques Perrey's 'EVA' which gained the label a chart position.

The last couple of years have taken Dewbury to a new level. As well as compiling the hugely successful 'Africafunk' album for Harmless and the 'Club Africa' series for Strut, he is also programming releases through his own Counterpoint label, distributed by Beechwood, which seeks to combine the best of past and present genres.

Russ presents his critically acclaimed radio show 'The New Jazz Spectrum' on Brighton's Surf 107 FM on Sundays, 1-3 pm. The show has become a cult favourite and Dewbury featured as Mojo magazine's UK Radio DJ Of The Month in 1998. Russ continues to run the JAZZ ROOMS and the JAZZ BOP from Brighton as well as DJ- ing extensively throughout the UK.
