Press Release :
On the “Unravel Remix EP”, out 17th July, San Francisco 7-piece The Seshen unveil six stunning reworks of tracks from 2014’s “Unravel” EP which gained widespread support from Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft, Don Letts, Nemone, THUMP, Line Of Best Fit, Afropunk and many more tastemakers around the world. The buzz surrounding their debut EP on Tru Thoughts added to their high demand as a live act, with major bookings including official SXSW showcases and support for tUnE-yArDs, Thundercat and Hiatus Kaiyote.

Mixing live and electronic elements, The Seshen create beat-driven compositions with a strong emotional core, with an experimental approach that makes for a compellingly creative experience both live and on record. Here, their hook-laden songs - fusing influences from psychedelia, hip-hop, pop, R&B, West African music, dub and indie rock - retain their innate beauty and lyricism while being spun out in exciting new directions by Lost Midas, AKDK, Astronauts, Etc., Jonny Faith and Uhuru Peak as well as the band’s very own synchronizer/sampler wizard Kumar Butler.

Providing the immersive backdrop for the two complementary vocalists, Lalin St Juste and Akasha Orr, are bassist/producer Aki Ehara, drummer Chris Thalmann, keyboard/synth player Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman and synchronizer/sampler Kumar Butler. Manipulating an array of technology alongside more traditional instruments and acoustic percussion, they complement Lalin and Akasha’s vivid poetic imagery with heavily layered electronic textures for a heady atmosphere that blurs the distinction between the abstract and the familiar.

The “Unravel Remix EP” opens with “2000 Seasons (Astronauts, Etc. Remix)”, fellow Bay Area native Astronauts, Etc. channelling the high-stakes human drama of the original into a clean, cool club cut via an inspired switch in time signature and a sci-fi-infused melee of synths. Much loved purveyors of punchy rhythms, AK/DK weave the silken verse and softly chanted chorus of “Unravel” among a swelling beatscape, building up to a straight-up dancefloor jam; Tru Thoughts label-mate Lost Midas (a fellow US West Coast dweller whose 2014 debut LP gained both BBC 6Music Album of the Day and a Guardian Guide Single of the Week) brings his playful yet pristine aesthetic to the same track, for a slice of glitchy electronic future funk that gains its first digital release here, having featured on a limited edition Record Store Day split 7”.

“The Fall (The Seshen Remix feat. Buddha G)” spotlights the production of Kumar Butler, delving into the underbelly of the original for a dark yet mellow version, perfected by the addition of a verse from MC Buddha G, a much respected contemporary and friend of the band whose hotly tipped upcoming projects include work with Grammy nominated producer DJ Dahi.Melbourne based instrumental hip hop producer Jonny Faith follows up the Bonobo and Avalanches comparisons garnered by his recent ‘Sundial’ album on Tru Thoughts with a luminescent and spacey reimagining of “Shapes”; while rising LA talent Uhuru Peak brings an organic, dubby take on the delicately murky dance-pop sensibility of “Turn”, showing off the chops that have won early support from the likes of KCRW and Gilles Peterson.

The Seshen are currently putting the finishing touches to a new album, with a host of major live shows coming up including a show with Waterstrider at the Great American Music Hall (10 July)and a new San Francisco residency.
