The PutBacks - Busted / Set Me Free
(7"/Digital) Hope Street Recordings HS002, 2010-04

April 2010 was on of my last months as a partner of the Superfly Records store, and I distinctly remember listening to this marvelous 7 inch and ordering a few copies for the shop... The A-side, Busted start as retro-swinging as a funky Bo Diddley instrumental, before adding some deep breaks, guitar choruses and finally... a singalong verse for all the heads of the world: "I'm... so busted"!! B-side Set Me Free is a soul/jazz instrumental cover of a mid-60s track from The Kinks and deserves a rightful place in a Molesting Laura mix: we'll try not to forget it next time we're busting the lady (who's the opposite of 'busted', by the way!). And now we're all waiting for a PutBacks full length...

Press Release :
From the bowels of an abandoned textiles factory in Brunswick, beneath a sign that advertises a long-defunct karate school, comes the second fully kicking release from HopeStreet Recordings, 'Busted' b/w 'Set Me Free', by The PutBacks, available as a 7' 45 and in digital format. Once you'll hear this 45 you will radiate a 'super nice vibe'.

Hope Street's Bobzilla and Tristan Ludowyk teamed up with the inimitable powerhouse rhythm combination The PutBacks bringing to you:

'I'm so Busted. I'm Busted' (repeat) .. and then you say.. 'Me, Oh, My!' (repeat)
It's so simple. You can interpret this bubblin' funky gem anyway you funkin' please. It's got a catchy hook, a hard swinging groove, one of the baddest breakdowns you'll hear in 2010 and then you get to sing-a-long, chant-style like an army of footballers. Funky footballers...

B-Set Me Free
The PutBacks re-work the classic track from Ray Davies and The Kinks, 'Set Me Free'. Re- work..? It's a re-invention. The bass and drums drive this baby coast-to-coast, the organ and horns offer spurts of steam, releasing the heat as Tom Martin's guitar simmers away that big chunk of melted butter. Now that's a tasty ride.

All aboard!!

About The PutBacks :
The PutBacks came into formation in 2007 after years as a backing band for Kate Ceberano. The PutBacks have performed as part of PBS 106.7 fm Live Music Week (2008/9), at Melbourne's premier funk night 'Soul-A-Go-Go', Falls Festival Lorne and have opened for Australian premier funk outfit The Bamboos as well as 'The Menahan Street Band featuring Charles Bradley' during their Australian tour in 2009.
The PutBacks instrumental funk-killer-floor-filler 'The Diamond Cutter', released March 2009 as a split 7' 45 on Hope Street Recordings, has received healthy rotation on Australian, US and UK radio, featured on Canadian DJ Double K's 'The New Funk Mix' available at and profiled on DJ Prestige's blog page

The PutBacks strengths are a deep funky groove with a raw, melodic sound.
