Press Release :
Alfred and Laura Darlington aka The Long Lost continue their acoustic project to make true love songs with second single "Amiss". A gentle Brasilo-Californian tune is the perfect bed for Laura's carefully uninflected delivery, Alfreds subtle backing vox and a sly use of turntablistic polyrhythms. The result is as unaffected as it is affecting, genuinely sweet in an era when that more often than not means Sunny D rather than honey.

Three great remixes follow. Nu-folksters Tunng twist the original into a slamming hoedown of a clog-stomper, all sly electronic twists and good time guitar. Fink re-tools his own brand of dubtronik soul-folk to space the tune out and add a featherbed of his own vox for the lovers to lie on.. Computer Jay, on the other hand, decides to let the rhythm hit 'em with bruising claps and Trumpton stylings. Rather like a female Hal saving her male counterpart from himself.

The Long Lost consists of high-school-sweethearts turned husband-&-wife Alfred (a.k.a. Daedelus) and Laura Darlington. Both hail from Santa Monica, California, where they met in the high school orchestra - he on double-bass and she on flute - and became partners in the ballroom dance club.

After 4 years apart, they formed The Long Lost during a renewed courtship in 1998. In contrast to the avant-electronics and hip-hop aesthetics of Alfred's music as Daedelus, The Long Lost is a union of two songwriters & producers with a penchant for sad sounds and delicate, lightly electronic-acoustic melodies. These two hopeless romantics make psychedelic folk lullabies for lovers and the lovelorn.

A fascinating and utterly individual project, The Long Lost take the subject of love away from the cliches and hackneyed wailing of the mainstream and reconnect it to those strange and uncontrollable emotions we're all so in thrall to.

Venezuela 70 - Cosmic Visions Of A Latin American Earth - Venezuelan Experimental Rock In The 1970s (CD/2LP, Soul Jazz, 2016)

English label Soul Jazz Records released this summer a collection of experimental rock recorded in Venezuela in the 1970s, at a time when oil was flowing in abundance and consequently culture rather well subsidized. However, this music had never really got out of the country until now, it's really a...
