The Jive Turkeys - Bread & Butter - out on Colemine Records

(CD) Colemine Records CLMN 12003, 2010-03-30

The Jive Turkeys are made up of four musicians who have been playing together for the better part of the last five years in a hip-hop group called Soundscape. Soundscape is a group based in Oxford, OH, home of Miami University. This is where Matt Amburgy (organ), Terry Cole (bass), Andrew DeRoberts (guitar), and Rob Houk (drums) first met. And while Soundscape has always provided all of them the opportunity to grow and develop as musicians through the group’s unique fusion of genres (hip-hop, funk, jazz, rock), The Jive Turkeys is a group that is much more narrow in its focus. The formation of The Jive Turkeys came about when the four decided they wanted to record some stripped-down, raw funk. So, they borrowed an organ, a Leslie, some old amps, all got together in a tiny little room and started cranking out tracks. The full-length debut from the kings of midwest instrumental funk is called Bread & Butter - an appropriate title considering the album is nothing but funky, soulful instrumental goodness from start to finish.

Speech Debelle - Freedom Of Speech
(CD/LP/Digital) Big Dada Recordings BD193, 2012-02-06

Two years since winning the 2009 Mercury Music Prize for her debut album, Speech Therapy, and having ridden a rollercoaster through life since then, Speech Debelle is ready to drop her second collection of music. Entitled Freedom of Speech, the album sees Speech turning from introspection to stand up, face and engage with the world around her, spitting confident themes of revolution and love. A first taste of the album came in the aftermath of this summer's riots, when Speech reacted immediately, leaking the track Blaze Up A Fire, (also featuring Roots ManuvaRealism), a track about political revolution written months before. Now the build-up begins to the release of Freedom of Speech in early February 2012 with the free download of the track Studio Backpack Rap. From political to musical revolution, Speech describes the track as being "all about virtual instrumentation and an ode to KwesSpeech Therapy, while showcasing just one aspect of her remarkable new album.
