Death Gate marks the return of Los Angeles-based producer and DJ William Bensussen, otherwise known as The Gaslamp Killer. The new five track EP, on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, is a dark, bleak creation that is unmistakably part of the GLK's universe. Describing the record, he states "Death Gate is about exploring the places between life and death, and the shattering of inner journeys that wait for us there." Flying Lotus further describes it as "…An inspiring progression from his last, as well as a breath of raw air in a world of clean, safe hip hop."

Press Release :
"Death Gate" marks the return of Los Angeles-based producer and DJ William Bensussen, otherwise known as The Gaslamp Killer. The new five track EP, on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, is a dark, bleak creation that is unmistakably part of the GLK's universe. Describing the record, he states "Death Gate is about exploring the places between life and death, and the shattering of inner journeys that wait for us there."

Flying Lotus further describes it as "…An inspiring progression from his last, as well as a breath of raw air in a world of clean, safe hip hop."

Content-wise, a spectrum of chapters emerge from the shadowy storyline, representing various periods in the Gaslamp Killer mythos. The opening track "Fun Over 100" finds a foundation in a lurching, off-kilter sequence of percussion with the analog wail of synthetic horn stabs, as if passing through the gates of the abyss.

"When I'm In Awe" features Gonjasufi, long time friend and collaborator, in raw vocal form. With 2010 seeing the release of "A Sufi and a Killer" (Warp Records), of which the vast majority was produced by the Gaslamp Killer, "When I'm In Awe" represents an un-archived lost chapter chanted like a prophecy, infused with obscure Ethiopian soul and Turkish rock harmonies.

"Carpool Dummy" is a co-creation with San Francisco based producer Mophono. A cascade of drums and rough reverb delays. Flying Lotus, upon hearing the track, adds "The boy is maturing and blowing up fast! seeing the world and taking souls, Gaslamp brings us these raw ass tracks with drumming that sounds like the boy is finally making his peace with the devil."

The crux of Death Gate comes in the form of "Shattering Inner Journeys" with another long time musical partner, Los Angeles producer Computer Jay. The tune builds itself around a fluid, entrancing organ-based motif provided by Computer Jay that hums over the live shifting drums of GLK, building to analog crescendo like a life long mantra taking form.

Album closer, "Monsterfromtheunderground" shifts to a solo affair in which Bensussen returns to face his shadows. Ferocious breaks coalescing with the darkest of bass tones that have no choice but to embrace the entropy and splinter into the void, or as the Gaslamp Killer calls it, the Death Gate.
