The Baker Brothers are back in town & have just released their 6th album entitled ‘AVID SOUND’ in Japan and are preparing for a UK onslaught this summer, releasing on UK funk/soul label Freestyle in June. Avid Sounds is a covers album that pays tribute to many of the bands/tunes that have fulled their funk passion from way back. The album includes b-boy classics to disco rockers and is sure to blow the roof off any sweaty funk den.
All Baker Brothers releases so far have been like hell to find. I managed to grad the second and third albums In With the Out-Crowd and Bakers Dozen , but never saw the latest one Transition Transmission. Thankfully this new album will be available in Europe thanks to the ever-growing Freestyle Records on Sept, 7th!

Press Release :
What do The Blackbyrds, Gil Scot Heron, Sly & The Family Stone and even The Steve Miller Band have in common?

On 'Avid Sounds' the brand new Baker Brothers album, these legendary acts get lots of love as Dan and Rich Baker and Chris Pedley lovingly revisit their favourite soul and jazz funk anthems and update them with the Baker Brothers twist and recruit a famous name or two to assist!

The album opens on a high light with Vanessa Freemans' faultless vocals taking the spotlight on Family Tree, we are soon shot into orbit as the band stamp their own identity on the wonderful disco-jazz delight that is Manzels' 'Space Funk.

Scottish soul-funksters The Average White Band were one of the first UK based acts to break through internationally and lead the way for European bands in love with black American music and so it is a great honour and fitting tribute to their groundbreaking career to have Hamish Stuarts vocals grace The Baker Brothers version of Sly Stones' 'If You Want Me To Stay'.

Steve Millers soulful psych rock anthem 'Fly Like An Eagle' is next up for a punchy Baker Brothers reworking, synthesizer and organ throb gleefully together as hornsman Matt McNaughton rests his brass and gives his tonsils a workout.

Talc (Wah Wah 45) guest on Street Player, the original of course being a Chicago classic and this version is just as lively with blaring horns and thumping drums providing this tracks unrelenting drive.

Avid Sounds is 11 stylish reworkings of The Baker Brothers favourite influences, from soul to funk to rock, all these tracks shine again in 2009!

Reviews :
"Even more soulful stuff than before from The Baker Brothers -- a record that really has them getting past the gritty funk of earlier records, and hitting a fuller groove that's totally great! The sound here is expanded past the guitar-heavy sounds that we first came to love from the Bakers -- and while there's still plenty of funk going on in the set, we're even more impressed at the added range of instrumentation -- more keyboards, bits of horns and Hammond, and a rich sound that's pure 70s soul all the way through! Almost all the cuts here are covers -- really well-done versions of older numbers, both rare and classic -- and most numbers have some vocals, sung by group members, and Vanessa Freeman guesting on one track -- a great version of "Family Tree". Other cuts include "Space Funk", "Street Player", "Shack Up", "Couldn't Get It Right", "Lady Day & John Coltrane", "Fly Like An Eagle", "Cola Bottle Baby", "The Mexican", "Blandford Super Fly", and "Rock Creek Park". Japanese pressing features the bonus track "Space Funk (Freefall Collective rmx)" (Source :

Biography :
Bournemouth-based Chris Pedley met up with Brothers Dan and Rich at a dodgy Function gig around six years ago. The trio then went on to write and perform their unique style of dirty Funk. The Band released three 7-inch singles and their first album, "Ten Paces" on Bournemouth label, ARSE Records, before being taken on by Independent label, PEDDLER Records in 2004.

They have since toured Japan three times and have payed a wide range of venues across Europe. They have released two 7-inch singles, the second featuring the voice of London Nu-Jazz/Broken Beat sensation, Vanessa Freeman. Their second album, "In with the out-crowd", was recorded live at The Camden Jazz Cafe, London. PEDDLER Records has also released two 12-inch remix records of The Baker Brothers' music, featuring mixes from Quantic Soul Orchestra, Nostalgia 77, Domu, Break Reform, Trevor Loveys, Jon Kennedy and Dr Rubberfunk.

The Baker Brothers' third album, "Baker's Dozen", is currently available on CD and Vinyl. The band recorded a new Live album in Tokyo in November 2006 and a live DVD in the Spring of 2007. The new album, TRANSITION TRANSMISSION was released in June 2008 in Japan, and our four albums, TEN PACES, IN WITH THE OUT CROWD, BAKERS DOZEN and TRANSITION TRANSMISSION are now available to download from the itunes music store.
