Super Hi-Fi - Single Payer
(7 inch/Digital Single) Electric Cowbell EC019, 2012-02-11

When Ezra Gale, bass player for Super Hi-Fi, contacted us last december, announcing the upcoming release of their 45 on Electric Cowbell Records, and describing the band as "a Brooklyn, NY-based live dub band", we were immediately hooked. Ezra is also playing bass for Aphrodesia, a heavily recommended 11-piece Afrofunk band from New York and San Francisco, which we already played twice in some of our much-respected 21st Century Afro mixes. Electric Cowbell Records are friends of ours who release some of the most eclectic and tasty music coming out from Brooklyn these days. And on the flip on the 45 there's also a dub heavy remix by Victor Rice... On paper you must admit that this 7 inch is supposed to be fantastic. Well it is. If you bring together the Fela Kuti influence of Aphrodesia, add some King Tubby kind of live dubbing, and put it out on vinyl through a supa-innovative label, that's what you get: incredible afro-dub greatness. The single will also be available digitally as an unedited 7mn version, with no less than 3 dub remixes. You need this and we'll prove it to you by playing the A-side in our next 21st Century Roots Reggae Spectacular coming up February 11th, a few days prior to this single's release. This is just the kind of band we wouldn't hesitate a second to go and see play live, so promoters move your asses and bring them to Paris asap!

Press Release :
Super Hi-Fi’s Electric Cowbell Records debut, “Single Payer” is a full-throated double trombone-fueled blast of classic dub. Recorded and mixed by Brooklyn dub master Prince Polo, the A-side refashions a UK-steppers vibe with traces of ska and rocksteady for a white-hot slab of raw groove. The B-side is a radically deconstructed remix from legendary dub producer Victor Rice.

Led by bassist and composer Ezra Gale, whose last outfit Aphrodesia memorably took their take on afrobeat all the way to Femi Kuti’s Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria, Super Hi-Fi has created waves in the fertile Brooklyn music scene for two years now. Partnering with the Sound Liberation Front- the production crew responsible for NYC’s Dub Invasion Festival- the band hosted the popular monthly “Afro-Dub Sessions” that featured collaborations with everyone from Subatomic Sound System to Ticklah and others. The band now takes the leap onto vinyl on the Brooklyn-based Electric Cowbell Records.

Featuring Alex Asher and Ryan Snow on trombones, Will Graefe on guitar, Gale on bass and Madhu Siddapha on drums, Super Hi-Fi’s arresting sound is showcased on “Single Payer,” a tongue-in-cheek political reference that is probably the only dub track you will hear that works in samples of Nancy Pelosi and Joe Lieberman alongside a fiery trombone solo.

The vinyl 45 comes with a download card that contains MP3 versions of both sides plus additional Victor Rice dub mixes that complete a three-part refashioning of the track.
