Stepak-Takraw - Phat Fat Jackson (7", Soul Garden Records Japan, 2014)

Stepak Takrow Phat Fat Jackson

The first listen I give to this new Afrofunk band from Japan is misleading. The group seems very downtempo-ish, which doesn't fit with what I previously heard from Japanese groovy bands so far… My mistake! I'm playing the record at the wrong speed. Hitting the "45" button I start again… Ooh yeah that's better!! A mixture of Afrofunk (without horns), bits of The Chakachas' "Jungle Fever" melody and a surf guitar solo. So cool you'll want to play it again right away!! Buy two copies to be sure. B-side goes into frantic, super high speed afro grooves gradually gliding into 1950s surf music spirit. A sense of urgency we had spotted recently with another Japanese band, JariBu Afrobeat Arkestra. A killer 45 for sure. Grab this before it's gone.
