Troisième album, toujours pas de hit, mais ça se met bien en place. Life est un peu mou, globalement, mais la révolution est déjà en marche: on retrouve ici des éléments de rhythm & blues classique, d'acid-rock de la baie de San Francisco (eh! nous sommes en 1968, ça paraît presque normal aujourd'hui, voire évident...), des arrangements sophistiqués et innovants, quelques beats pur funk, des guitares acides et énervées... Avec le recul, on se dit que tous les éléments sont là, mais que le résultat n'est pas encore abouti. Cela dit, la guitare de Freddie Stone en impose déjà (psychédélique sur Dynamite!, blues sur Plastic Jim...), et surtout la basse de Larry Graham (qui partira en 72 fonder le Graham Central Station), qui ronfle et groove comme jamais. Normal: c'est avec Sly & the Family Stone qu'est apparue cette nouvelle technique qu'on appelle le slap... inédite auparavant. Encore un album important, donc, mais toujours pas essentiel.
