Afin de continuer notre petit tour d'horizon des essentiels indispensables du funk 70's (LE FONK), après la discographie (jamais complète mais bien fournie) Parliament/Funkadelic du Funkmaster George Clinton, après la période funk d'Herbie Hancock, avant qu'on s'attaque aux albums seventies de Monsieur James Brown, parlons un peu de Sly and the Family Stone. Déjà avec ces quatre-là, vous aurez de bonnes bases. En effet ce sont eux qui ont innové, qui ont intégré d'autres influences à la soul, au gospel et au R&B sixties, tel le rock psychédélique en particulier. D'ailleurs, il n'y a qu'à voir, ce sont eux les plus samplés dans le hip hop. Des références vous dis-je. A whole new thing, sorti en 1967, n'a pas encore atteint les sommets à venir, et reste très soul, pas encore vraiment funk. Les cuivres (sax et trompette) y sont omniprésents, et le tout sonne un peu... Motown. Mais déjà en 67, Sly rassemble hommes, femmes, blancs et noirs sur disque et sur scène, et fait passer son message politique dans sa musique. Agréable, intéressant, mais pas encore indispensable.
