Various - Shapes 11:01 - Compiled by Robert Luis
(2CD/LP with 2CD) Tru Thoughts TRUCD/LP239, 2011-10-10

The new bi-annual Shapes compilation from Tru Thoughts Recordings is coming out in october and once again it's full of classic tracks, new signatures and exlusives for a very cheap price tag. The first CD is a nice selection of horizontal grooves, songs & electronica from the vast palette of style from the label's recent output. Among the discoveries : new signings Anchorsong from Japan, and his trippy live downtempo music, Lossy from East London, a duo of jazz-infused electronica, groovy, soulful and uplifting trip hop, a new track from songstress Kinny, the kind of perfect sweetness for the ears to rub yourself into, the glorious reggae interpretation of the Dr Who Theme by the Smerins Anti-Social Club (only available on a strictly limited 45 for record store day before) and of the Dr. Dre hit Nuthin' But A 'G' Thing cover in cumbia mode by Quantic Y Su Conjunto Los Miticos Del Ritmo (only available on a limited Serato 12 inch before). The second disc is a more clubby, uptempo affair, with a tendancy towards crunchy or bassy speed-ambient. Among the notable new stuff are the afro-wobbly remix by Débruit of Saravah Soul is killer bouncy electro deconstructivism, Hint bringing hard to describe, crazy & addictive dance thingies to the table, and label honcho Rob Luis alias Nirobi who's also there with his heavy bass and percussive dancefloor beats to rock the roof off. Press Release :
'Shapes 11:01', out on double CD and vinyl on 10th october, is the latest in Tru Thoughts' highly regarded label compilation series, featuring music from exciting artists including Quantic, Skream, Aloe Blacc, Belleruche, Nostalgia 77, Zed Bias, Benji Boko, Hidden Orchestra, Lanu, Hint, Tawiah, Mark Pritchard, Wildcookie and more, across a selection of current tunes, upfront exclusives and classic cuts.

One of the UK’s most established independents, Tru Thoughts is home to a roster of emerging talents and successful established acts alike. This collection takes the listener on a sonic tour of the Brighton based imprint in 2011, ranging from cutting edge, bassy dancefloor heat through esoteric jazz to deep, entrancing electronica and acoustic folk stylings, touching on blues, soul, dub, Cumbia and much in between. CD1 is an uplifting yet more laid back listen, with lush instrumentals and finely crafted songs, and disc 2 picks up the pace and heads for the dancefloor.

With a host of new signings on the label this year, Tru Thoughts A&R Robert Luis relished the chance to show off some of the latest additions to the fold on this compilation. These include the LA based, half New Zealander/half Japanese musical prodigy Mark de Clive-Lowe, who recently unveiled his upcoming ‘Renegades’ album on Gilles Peterson’s BBC R1 show; and Anchorsong, a Japanese beatmaker and multi-instrumentalist, much championed by Huw Stephens (BBC R1), whose debut LP is also due this year. Plus, two Brighton neighbours: Beta Hector, with his "Jupiter Mission" single taken from the psychedelic, sci-fi flavoured solo debut 'Sunbeam Insulin', and Benji Boko, the livewire DJ/producer with a deep, quirky, hip hop infused electro style which has seen him collaborate with Maxi Jazz (Faithless) and Roots Manuva.

Established Tru Thoughts artists showcasing upfront new music include underground bass bubbler Hint, and powerful chanteuse Kinny (who's currently working with De La Soul on her new single); the immense, bassy Debruit remix of Brazilian/British funk band Saravah Soul also gets a highly anticipated release; while Maddslinky delivers a killer new rework of the majestic Hidden Orchestra which has been huge in his DJ sets. Elsewhere you'll find his alter ego Zed Bias joining forces with Warp's Mark Pritchard, on a track taken from the new Zed album 'Biasonic Hotsauce - Birth of the Nanocloud'. Two exclusive songs signed specifically for this compilation, having pleased the crowds in Robert Luis’ DJ sets and Unfold radio show, come from new London based duo Lossy, a collaboration between classical/jazz musician Sam Sharp and Swedish singer Emilia Martensson; with catchy hooks and classy production, the Lossy sound lifts and haunts in equal measure and has been compared to Lamb, Little Dragon, Jazzanova, Bjork and Joy Orbison. In-demand cuts making a debut CD appearance on ‘Shapes 11:01’ include a Cumbia version of Dr Dre from the Quantic/Tru Thoughts/Serato 12", "Hip Hop En Cumbia", the fastest selling Tru Thoughts single ever (2000 copies in a few days); and Tenor Fly vocalising Smerins Anti-Social Club’s reggae style "Dr Who" theme, previously a Record Store Day 7".

Classic Tru Thoughts selections from the archives see Aloe Blacc, back when he did still need a dollar, collaborating with Lanu (who also has two cuts on here from his acclaimed current ‘Her 12 Faces’ album, featuring Platinum-selling Australian star Megan Washington); and Belleruche’s massively popular "Northern Girls" also features, having had over half a million YouTube hits as well as recently soundtracking a Mercedes Benz TV advert.

Between them, the music and artists on this compilation are regularly supported by Annie Mac (BBC R1), Steve Lamacq (BBC 6Music), Benji B (BBC R1), Mary Anne Hobbs (XFM), John Kennedy (XFM), Craig Charles (BBC 6Music), Guy Garvey (6Music/Elbow), Don Letts (6Music), Cerys Matthews (6Music), Ross Allen (Ministry), Alex Nut (Rinse FM), Target (1Xtra), MistaJam (1Xtra), Seb Chew (Rinse FM) and many other tastemakers around the world, not to mention across the press and online media. Look out for all the artists' individual releases - this compilation is the tip of the iceberg, an introduction to a host of talents... and there is so much more to explore.

Don't miss Tru Thoughts' big London, showcasin a huge line-up of live acts and DJs, on 19th November at Koko, London.
