Peliroja - Situaciones (7", Peace & Rhythm Records, 2014)
With Brendon Rule a.k.a. DJ Andujar, they've launched the Peace & Rhythm record label, in order to put out glorious independent music on limited edition vinyl - Funk, world & jazz being the launch points. Clearly those guys are obsessed. Record freaks putting out records. A company solely run by DJs. At Paris DJs, we identify with those cats right away. Add to that their regular support of our digital releases and crowdfunding campaigns (hint: including the current one!) and you've got a label we're gonna hunt the releases from for sure!
Well, let's rejoice. Here comes a package in the mail with a 45 (and a nice note on a flyer about a july party where DJ Bongohead was opening for Grupo Fantasma!). After the golden era-inspired Salsa Dura sounds from Puerto Rico's Orquesta El Macabeo on 'Macacoa / No Sé Cuando Llegué', released in April 2014, this is the second seven inch on Peace & Rhythm, introducing producer/composer/guitarist Jacob Plasse, the man behind Peliroja, Los Hacheros and Melazo… with two tunes extracted from the first of those 3 band's album released last summer on Chulo Records, 'Injusticia'. New York-based Peliroja is a collective gathering around Jacob some of his friends from the Daptone crew, the Pedrito Martinez Group and the Los Hacheros band, inspired by Ethiopian, Congolese and West Indies sounds. Their first single 'Situaciones is a perfect example of their blend: Carribean funk grooves, Latin soul vocals, percussion and horn slabs, Ethio solos and arrangements, Congolese guitars - deliciously infectious!

Press Release :
Producer and guitarist Jacob Plasse has united some of his old friends - players from the Daptones, Pedrito Martinez Group and Los Hacheros - to form Peliroja, a New York collective inspired by the sounds of Ethiopia, Dominican Republic, Cuba and the Congo.
Produced and co-written by Plasse, these tunes were recorded live to tape at his studio in Brooklyn, in the spirit of the music he was raised on. The groove to this music is deep, and heard in the way the Daptones’ rhythm section - drummer Homer Steinweiss and bassist Nick Movshon - play off the polyrhythms of Carlos Padron’s timbales and Jhair Salas’ congas, forming a new fusion of old sounds.
"Situaciones" blends Ethiopian, afro-cuban and afrobeat elements together with deep soul, while "Ciudad de Nadie" finds a Harlem River Drive influence within the latin funk. These songs are also available on Peliroja's full length release Injusticia, released earlier on Chulo Records.
Peace & Rhythm are pleased to see these two funky tunes on limited edition DJ-friendly 45rpm 7" wax. Picture sleeve design by Pablo Yglesias. Co-released with Chulo Records.
“a great mix of NYC funk and salsa…they nail it.” - NPR Alt.Latino
