Orlando Julius & His Modern Aces - Super Afro Soul
(CD/2xLP) Strut STRUTACD/ALP003, 2000-06-26
"One of the most under-rated musicians in the history of African music, Orlando Julius is the man who composed the chant for the mighty 'Going Back To My Roots' and allegedly gave James Brown 100% of the inspiration for 'I Got You (I Feel Good)'. He spent many years in the US working alongside Hugh Masekela and The Crusaders among others, but is best known in his homeland for one classic album, 'Super Afro Soul' from 1966. Using funk rhythm structures way before his time, Julius cooks up a killer high life fusion with a host of memorable melodies - watch out too for a great cover of The Temptations' 'My Girl'! This is the first time for this album anywhere outside of Nigeria since the 1960s."
