(Digital Single) Tru Thoughts TRUDD035, 2011-11-21

The bluesy, catchy and downright addictive Sleepwalker, out digitally on 21st November, is the third single to be taken from Nostalgia 77’s highly acclaimed fourth solo album The Sleepwalking Society, which came out in March on Tru Thoughts. The lead track on this digital package is joined by a diverse selection of hot new remixes from label-mates Mark de Clive-Lowe and Lanu, and AmbassadeursJalapeño Records). The ramshackle, bluesy Tom Waits-esque rhythm section stomp on Sleepwalker is paired with horn textures reminiscent of Duke Ellington and the incredible vocals of the album’s secret weapon, German chanteuse Josa Peit. On this song, a co-write with Nostalgia 77 main man Ben Lamdin, Peit’s rich, soulfelt timbre rings out as clear as a bell, imparting some simple truths with a wryly playful overtone. At once catchy and with a lasting, solid appeal, this track has become one of the most popular on the LP.

‪Nostalgia 77 - Sleepwalker feat Josa Peit‬

Press Release :
The bluesy, catchy and downright addictive "Sleepwalker", out digitally on 21st November, is the third single to be taken from Nostalgia 77’s highly acclaimed fourth solo album ‘The Sleepwalking Society’, which came out in March on Tru Thoughts. The lead track on this digital package is joined by a diverse selection of hot new remixes from label-mates Mark de Clive-Lowe and Lanu, and Ambassadeurs (Jalapeño Records).

Nostalgia 77, Josa Peit and band will be performing a live Maida Vale session for Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2) to celebrate this single (TX date tbc), adding to an impressive array of radio play for the album. Supporters include Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music), Guy Garvey (BBC 6Music/Elbow), Nemone (BBC 6Msuic), Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1), Loose Ends (BBC Radio 4), The Selector (NME Radio/Worldwide), Gideon Coe (BBC 6Music), Don Letts (BBC 6Music), Ross Allen (Ministry Radio) and Laurent Garnier; plus heavy rotation on NPR and KCRW (USA), and national radio playlisting in France and elsewhere. Just some of the responses to the record:

"It’s a beautiful sound" - NEMONE (BBC 6MUSIC)
"Absolutely perfect music from Nostalgia 77... this new one’s great." - JAMIE CULLUM (BBC R2)

"It’s really lovely. I’ll support it whenever I can" - EMMA WARREN (NME RADIO)
"Absolutely terrific" - CATHIE MAHONEY (BBC RADIO 4 - LOOSE ENDS)
"Keeping jazz up with the times" - MARTIN CHILTON, THE TELEGRAPH

The ramshackle, bluesy Tom Waits-esque rhythm section stomp on "Sleepwalker" is paired with horn textures reminiscent of Duke Ellington and the incredible vocals of the album’s secret weapon, German chanteuse Josa Peit. The new promo video for "Sleepwalker" adds Peit’s puckish, visually expressive talents into the mix - this compelling clip with a sleep-addled and dreamlike feel, is on YouTube now, with over 1000 hits in 24 hours.

Summer 2011 saw the Nostalgia 77 live band performing at a number of festivals; previewing their appearance at Brecon Jazz, the Telegraph ran a full feature on Nostalgia 77 hailing Lamdin as one of a contemporary cluster of musicians moving the scene forward in its many forms.

‘The Sleepwalking Society’ is rich with overtones of blues and folk and has seen Nostalgia 77 exploring new territory, in the process widening his fanbase far beyond the jazz scene where he was mainly known (previous plaudits include the John Peel ‘Play More Jazz’ award, and Gilles Peterson’s Jazz Track of the Year). In addition to the aesthetic progression, it is the most autobiographical Nostalgia 77 work yet, and very much more a songwriter's record. Key to its structure and cohesion - and its popularity with critics and fans alike - was Lamdin’s discovery of, and decision to work with, the invigoratingly rich-voiced singer Josa Peit. This long-awaited fourth solo LP has ushered in a new era for Nostalgia 77 as a wordsmith of note, with an indispensible vocalist by his side, and this partnership is shown in all its glory on "Sleepwalker", which follows on from previous singles "Simmerdown" (February) and the "Beautiful Lie" EP (July).

Nostalgia 77, Josa Peit and band play the Tru Thoughts showcase night at Koko, London, 19th November.
