New Tru Thoughts signing : Beni Boko

"Hello! I bring you news of Benji Boko, who has made a big impression in recent years with his jaw-dropping live 'Can I Mix It?' DJ shows, and counts DJ Yoda, Rob Da Bank and Zane Lowe among his growing fanbase. In between wowing the sweaty masses with his incendiary live antics - from Bestival and V Festival to New Years Eve at the O2 with Calvin Harris and Deadmau5 - Boko has been toiling away in the studio and is now set to unveil the other side of his musical persona, with his debut album, 'Beats, Treats and All Things Unique', out 20th June on Tru Thoughts.

"What Benji does live is really fun and unique" - ZANE LOWE (BBC RADIO 1)
"One of the most versatile new guys out there, with a great stage presence and cracking MIX of music!” - ROB DA BANK (BBC RADIO 1 / BESTIVAL)
“Benji is the future! His 'Can I MIX it?' show is FRIKKIN' MEGA!” - DJ YODA
"This is Benji's year!" - JAGUAR SKILLS

Benji Boko's fresh, melodic, slightly twisted hip hop-infused style - as much influenced by Beardyman, DJ Yoda and the Neptunes as it is by cartoons, Peter Sellers, Monty Python and fairytales - has won over the likes of Maxi Jazz (Faithless) and Ricky Rankin (Roots Manuva), who both collaborate on the album. He's keeping it real though...you'll also find his 7-year-old cousin on Intro and Outro duties...

The first single will be the mesmerising “Where My Heart Is” featuring Maxi Jazz, out as a free download on 23rd May. For the promo video we will be calling for talented illustrators, graffiti artists and animators to get involved. Based on an ambitious creative premise, the finished vid will then be launched in June... more on that soon...

Check out the video for “I Had A Dream (Mini Obama)” - a skit from the new album :

Tru Thoughts are excited to be launching this charismatic up-and-coming artist, the boy from Brighton with the big hair and the split personality (...his alter-ego is a hyperactive purple monkey...) whose larger-than-life stage persona and unbelievable mixing skills are matched by his creative prowess as a producer and beat-maker. Boko's magic touch as a producer was briefly seen in 2009 when his track “Jungle VIP” became an underground hit, shooting to no. 16 on the iTunes electronic chart, with heavy radio play across the stations.

Keep an eye out for more from Benji Boko in the very near future. In the meantime, please spread the word in your news pages/announcements, and do not hesitate to contact me with interview requests for Boko (and his monkey), or anything else you may need.

Together, let's bring Bokomania to the world.

'Beats, Treats and All Things Unique'  will be out 20th June on Tru Thoughts.

Cheers!"

Biography :
Q. Name & Occupation ?
A. Benji Boko. Music Producer, DJ & Beatboxer...

Q. Can you describe your style please?
A. Seeing as you asked so nicely! I sample and remix lots of old cartoons, movie soundtracks, Nintendo games, fairy tales, Disney and anything else that makes me sqirm with musical excitement. I take those records, add some fun, some foolishness and some funky rhythms and VOILA!..

Q. You're French?
A. No. I just like the word Voila!..

Q. How did you start?
A. I started making music millions and millions of years ago in the jungle. I used to battle whatever species wanted to challenge me. I beat Neanderthal G in a volcanic rock rhythm battle and Turntable-Rex in a one off pre-historic music freestyle. This was millions of years ago so you probably don't remember!..

Q. So where have you been all this time?
A. I've been frozen for millions of years. Only recently a team of explorers found me and I was de-frosted by scientists...

Q. So what now?
A. Well, its taken me a while to get back up to scratch with human life and I've managed to get my musical skills back. This record label, Tru-Thoughts found me last year tapping on tree trunks and gave me a deal. I've now got an album coming out and a new live show on the way...

Q. Album?
A. Yes. . . Album!..

Q. Live Show?
A. Yes. . . Live Show!..

Q. Can you elborate?
A. Why, of course! The album is really cool. It's half upbeat fun remixes for the club and half down-tempo and funky hip-hop, featuring some of the best human talent around. The live show is an explosive combination of live producing, remixing, beatboxing, silly voices and general monkey business...

Q. Where can we hear your stuff?
A. I have a single out called "The Jungle V.I.P" which reached number 16 in the iTunes Electronic UK charts. Its done really well in USA and loads of other countries also. Check out www.benjiboko.com and on this myspace page here for some more musical melange and freebies...

Q. Is there anything else we should know?
A. My address is Tree 33, Stigwick Street, Marshland, Forest of The Purple Pear, MP3 IOU. I love fruit, especially purple rain pears and rolly dotted bananas. Lastly, my album and show will colour in your ears and make your eyes turn into strawberry jelly!..

Q. Thanks!
A. No, thank you!..

Venezuela 70 - Cosmic Visions Of A Latin American Earth - Venezuelan Experimental Rock In The 1970s (CD/2LP, Soul Jazz, 2016)

English label Soul Jazz Records released this summer a collection of experimental rock recorded in Venezuela in the 1970s, at a time when oil was flowing in abundance and consequently culture rather well subsidized. However, this music had never really got out of the country until now, it's really a...
