Neal. - Bang
(LP/CD/Digital) Royal Family Records, 2012-05-22
Spring is definitely the Evans Brothers (Soulive) season and 2012 will be their year. We've just reviewed Alan Evans trio album and Lettuce new record; a new Soulive comes this June. And now it's Neal Evans' turn with this exciting and surprising solo release. Don't expect orgiastic jam in the manner of Soulive nor old-school funk the Lettuce way. Neal.'s Bang is all about weird break beats ('Crashland'), sick infra grooves, wet cinematic soundscapes ('Odds Against'), French and Italian library, film noir anthems, mellow soul melodies - instrumental hip-hop at its best in any case. Though Neal Evans' solo record is no soundtrack, it's difficult to avoid the idea of a film score. First because the superb art cover (like a movie poster) suggests a story behind the music, secondly the tracks have 'chapter' names, thirdly because some tunes sound like the greatest Morricone scores for the screen (take 'Adventurer' for instance). Neal plays all the instruments on Bang (what a nice vibes' sound he's got), except horns (helped by Coachema Gastelum) and guitars (partner in crime Eric Krasno was a simple and obvious choice). If you don't know where to file Bang, it will be at ease next to Barry Adamson, Shawn Lee, RJD2, Lalo Schifrin and Bernie Worrell.
