"One listen to the tracks that make up Michael Kiwanuka's three-song EP, Tell Me a Tale, and you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd been transported a solid four decades in the past. Rough, intimate production with an emphasis on funk and Kiwanuka's mix of hearty vocals and sweet harmonies makes him sound like soul music's new hero", says the press release of this 5 tracks live session available exclusively on iTunes, which is quite true (check our review for more details) but doesn't give any hint about what's to be found in this kind of Peel Sessin without the Peel. The arrangements are indeed stripped down and the tracks sound more like demos but the pleasure of listening to Michael Kiwanuka's incredible soulful voice is intact. In this intimate setting, with mainly voice and guitar, he's getting really close to Van Morrison, without impersonating the man. The tracks were recorded live at the Camden Roundhouse in July 2011.
