Lettuce - Fly - out on Royal Family Records

Lettuce Fly
Lettuce - Fly
(CD/LP/Digital) Royal Family Records, 2012-06-05

Lettuce's new album is more an orgy of sounds than a mere record, surely the best way to celebrate the band's 20th anniversary. Fly, their first LP since 2008's Rage! takes a hard line on non-contemporary (retrofuturistic would be the right word) funk, blasting every aspect of the genre during 60 minutes. There's absolutely no room, no rest or chill moments on Fly, just a row of demented under-adrenalin killer tunes with super heavy bass, old-school horns section, psychedelic fuzzy guitars and frantic keys. The seven-piece jamband has earned a revitalized sound after touring intensively during 12 months in the US and Fly sounds indeed like a live recording. "We"re more together and set to crush than ever before" says drummer and chief songwriter Adam Deitch. It's difficult and vain to isolate tracks from the superpacked whole, but highlights include eponymous track 'Fly', 'Ziggowatt' (Deitch's ode to Meters' drummer Zigaboo Modeliste), instrumental War cover 'Slippin' Into Darkness' and psychedelic final anthem 'Ghost of Jupiter'. A platter that truly looks like its art cover: stellar, impressive, massive and supercharged.
