Formerly known as Joe Acheson Quartet, Hidden Orchestra combine two live drummers and deep basslines with strong jazz and classical influences, to make cinematic, emotive, percussive, next generation music using traditional instrumentation and organic samples. The band may occupy a musical stratum all on their own, but you can detect influences as diverse as Aphex Twin, Debussy, Xploding Plastix, Radiohead, Squarepusher, Madlib and Gene Krupa.

Hidden Orchestra's debut album, Night Walks, showcases the energetic originality with which they emulate electronic music via acoustic means. The album was funded by the Scottish Arts Council, and features a selection of distinguished Scottish jazz/folk/classical guest musicians. It is due for release on Brighton-based independent label Tru Thoughts in September.

The band have shared stages with The Bays, Bonobo, Jaga Jazzist, Aim, Red Snapper, and Gilles Peterson. Their beautifully-crafted, explosive live show, where the core quartet is augmented with visuals, cello and brass has cemented their reputation as one the UK's most unique up-coming outfits.

Their genuine cross-genre appeal can be seen from their winning of the guitar-band-dominated T-Break competition to play at T in the Park 2008, at the same time as being listed in the A-Z of the greatest Scottish jazz artists of all time by Radio Scotland.

The band is founded on Acheson's exceptional musical upbringing and career as an established composer, music producer and radio documentary maker, with credits on numerous radio TV and film documentaries and dramas, ranging from BBC Radio 4 through to 1Xtra.

"A band that you won't come across anywhere else in the world at the moment, one of the most impressive things you can see live" - BBC Radio 1 DJ Vic Galloway

"Joe Acheson Quartet were formidable at creating layered cinematic sonicscapes, which meshed together arrays of samples, creeping build ups and dissipated breakbeats. It was a beautifully sculpted organic procession of highly impressive creations from a very promising and already essential Edinburgh-based quartet." - Three Weeks Magazine review of 2009 Edinburgh International Jazz Festival

"You don't need two drummers - but you do need two drummers!" - Comedian Phil Kay at Big Tent Festival 2009

"There's a metronomic precision as well as a very human pulse to this music, which seems designed to work on different levels simultaneously. Both danceable and attractively ambient, the compositions of bass guitarist and electronics wiz Acheson draw on a cornucopia of ingredients." - The Glasgow Herald review of Triptych Festival

"...two drummers, a laptopper, Joe Acheson on bass and an impressive array of samplers, dials, cables, knobs, and levers, plus a violinist and cellist both poised in front of their music stands as if this was the Usher Hall. The resulting music is a beguiling, psychedelic, lush, sweeping and groovy hybrid of trip-hop swagger, discerning drum'n'bass, epic soundscapes, funky electronica, cosmic zouk, melancholy space synth, Ozric Tentacles-esque danceability, and impeccable nu-classical. But above all, Joe Acheson's music is delightfully cinematic and makes out of the post-rock ideals the very music that they should spawn."

"What made the night, however, was the Joe Acheson Quartet's assured, super-tight and undeniably funky set. Playing some new tunes, and attacking their moody soundscapes with real gusto, they looked and sounded like they were worth every word of the hype. With the right record deal, they will do damage, make no mistake about it" - Skinny Magazine

Press Release :
Hidden Orchestra have recently been commissioned to provide a live original soundtrack to Powaqqatsi - the sequel to Godfrey Reggio/Francis Ford Coppola's first film, Koyaanisqatsi (the original has a soundtrack by Philip Glass) - for a series of high profile showings in Edinburgh and Glasgow and a tour of the UK.

FOR FANS OF: BONOBO, CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA, ZERO 7

The first single, "Footsteps", will be free from 16th August on Bandcamp, where fans can also stream a selection of album tracks.

'Night Walks', out 20th September, is the debut album from new Tru Thoughts signing, Hidden Orchestra. The driving force behind the Edinburgh-based band is the acute artistic vision of Joe Acheson, a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, composer, music producer, and producer/presenter of radio documentaries for the BBC.

An intense and rewarding listening experience, "Night Walks" encompasses the energy and production techniques of studio-produced beats, but replacing synths and drum machines with natural/acoustic sounds and instruments for an emotionally potent style. Built on contrasts - experimental without losing accessibility, electronic and acoustic, complex and simple, dark and energetic whilst intricate and calm - there is a sense of journey and progression, and, in Acheson's words, "the brooding reflections of a solitary walk through the still, restless night".

Hidden Orchestra have a very eclectic fanbase, which could be born from the fact that the emphasis is on being experimental and accessible at the same time, creating music based on feeling and energy, rather than image or fashion. Such is their cross-genre appeal that in 2008 the band won the guitar/indie/rock band-dominated T-Break competition to play at renowned Scottish festival T in the Park, while simultaneously being listed by Radio Scotland in the A-Z of the greatest Scottish jazz artists of all time. The band play with two drum kits on stage - not for the gimmick, but because their input is needed to play all the layers of beats in Acheson's studio production.
