Grant Phabao & The Lone Ranger - The Mobsta (Digital Single, Paris DJs)
For this new single, The Lone Ranger came to us saying 'I want to do something different, something more closer to a hip hop vibe, with more acting in my singing… and lots of sound effects'. After the massive gun battle with armed gangs fighting police and soldiers that took place in Kingston in may 2010, he tried to explain that he wanted to raise some awareness on today's Jamaica, where between 70-80% of fatal shootings have been linked to criminal gangs, whose firepower equals that of the police.
Jamaica's murder rate has multiplied by 5 in the last 40 years, soaring to become one of the highest in the world, currently at least double that of other Caribbean countries. Ranger doesn' debate here, he just recalls memories of his youth with his unique lyrical flair, a time when settling scores used to be just that and not absurd street killings. With a touch of humor, he concludes: "A dem a thug? A dem a gangsta? But me a mobsta, tell it to dem!"
This is not our usual reggae riddim, but something French producer Grant Phabao and Jamaican deejay The Lone Ranger never tried before. A dark tale of dark times.
