Whilst Ninja Tune is hellbent on making its 20th anniversary celebrations memorable to say the least, they're also intent on signing the artists that will keep them going another 20 years. Eskmo is one of the latest of these; a young artist deeply rooted in the resurgence of electronic music, with the vision and talent to write songs that defy genre and could only be his own. With prior recordings being released on esteemed labels Warp and Planet Mu, San Francisco based Eskmo is already being touted as one of the key artists in a new wave of creativity in electronica. escribed by Bleep.com as "Masterfully produced... sophisticated, post-Dilla hip-hop funk," Eskmo's music has caught the attention of Amon Tobin, who he collaborated with on a recent project entitled Eskamon. He has also toured as a live act throughout North America and Europe, and opened for both Amon and Flying Lotus.

Press Release :
Welcome, Ninja Tune's latest signing: the one and only Eskmo, AKA Brendan Angelides, a native of Connecticut now based in San Francisco. Widely heralded within the community as one of the most original of a new wave of electronica artists, his eponymous debut album for Ninja Tune finally offers Eskmo a canvas broad enough to create his first masterpiece. Embracing and exploring glitch, dubstep and R'n'B, and layering his own ethereal vocals into the dreamy mix, it's a fine showcase for everything that has made Eskmo such a whispered-about talent.

Angelides has been making tracks as Eskmo since 1999, recording a series of tracks and remixes for labels like Planet Mu and Warp in recent years, and releasing two acclaimed singles, ‘Hypercolor' and ‘Angus Dei', on his own Ancestor imprint in 2009. Eskmo's won the patronage of fellow Ninja-artist, the legendary Amon Tobin, with whom he's collaborated as Eskamon, while Flying Lotus hand-picked this kindred spirit to play his Brainfeeder Sessions. Via these channels, he was discovered by Ninja Tune, who swiftly invited Eskmo to join their hallowed ranks, and release a debut album.

For this album, Eskmo has abandoned the strictures of making tracks for the dancefloor and the strictures of the 12" single format, and followed his visionary muse. "Before Warp and Planet Mu I kind of fell into the game of making tracks to get released on smaller dance labels, having to cater to ‘dance' formulas," he explains. "Over this past couple of years, I feel I've let go of that, and am just writing the songs I want to write. I got back to what excited me about making electronic music when I started out, creating these little universes with sound and writing songs."

The album was, he says, written over a six month stretch "in the middle of a whole bunch of personal relationship-type stuff, a lot of deep life-experience type stuff happening that helped the music just bleed out of me. I just poured all those feelings into the music, it's very cathartic. I allowed myself to let go of DJ structure - it's not a ‘dance club' album, because that kind of stuff hasn't inspired me in years. This is the first full body of work where I'm singing all over it, and allowing myself to get over that furlough of expression has been really liberating."

The first release on the label following Ninja Tune's 20th Anniversary box set signals a brave new chapter for this artist, and for electronica itself. Dreamy, haunting, full of ghostly funk and inventive sonics, Eskmo serves up electronica with a most human heart.

Monophonics - In Your Brain

Monophonics are a San Francisco soul/funk band we've been following quite some time. We played their afrofunk track Ageless feat. Karl Denson from their 2010 album Into The Infrasounds (check here), we've selected for the upcoming third volume of the series their epic afro/funk/jam thing Baobab Tree from their 2007 album Playin & Simple, and since we received this fan-tas-tic third album to be released on Ubiquity Records mid-may, we've also played their soul burner There's A Riot Going On in last month's Bag of Goodies selection and kept a few other marvels on the side for some upcoming selections… Their cover of Bang Bang will surely fit a Molesting Laura mix soon, for example… The Monophonics sound is deeply rooted in 70s Funk & Soul, but with a lot of fuzzy psychedelics and bits of 60s garage rock, nods to afrofunk and blaxploitation, rather close to the best productions from Orgone or Daptone's studios, and it's quite understandable that the band left their self-releasing politics to join a worldwide label such as Ubiquity! This one won't leave the Paris DJs stereo for weeks… and vinyl is recommended, as always.

Alan Evans Trio - Drop Hop - out on Royal Family Records

Alan Evans Trio - Drop Hop
(CD/Digital) Royal Family Records, 2012-05-14

Soulive's drummer Alan Evans is back in the groove with a trio formation. If you're into Booker T. and the MG's, Medeski Martin & Wood, The City Champs, Will Bernard Trio, The Meters and every good organ trio, Drop Hop is a must-have and a future classic. Loaded with instantly catchy tunes, it reveals the obvious talents of Alan Evans' longtime friends: heavy Hammond lines of Beau Sasser (a true revelation on B3 - at least for us) and superb Danny Mayer's Grant-Greenish guitar riffs. We love the rough and dirty sound of this release, one of the Spring's grooviest soul-funkwise platter, along with the new Sugarman 3 and the terrific Wil Blades/Billy Martin duo's album (Shimmy).
