Dels has signed a three album contract with Big Dada. One of the true originals of the grime scene - both as an MC and a producer - Dels nearly signed with Big Dada two years ago (and actually played at their 10th Anniversary party), so everyone there is very pleased to have finally persuaded him! After a series of acclaimed mixtapes, Dels's first full album is scheduled for July 2010. First single, Party Animal, was released January 18th.

"Let's go back, back. Back/ To when I used to shapeshift and shift right back"

Welcome please, to the world of Kieren Dickens aka DELS. The young MC has been creating a buzz ever since John Peel heard him as a teenager and put him on the radio. Now he's ready to re-write the rules of rap in the UK in a way that hasn't happened for years.

"Shapeshift" is a perfect place to start. The beat is courtesy of long-time collaborator Joe Goddard, better known for his work as part of Hot Chip. Goddard hooks up some ultra-squelchy, off-kilter electronic madness (as well as dropping in to deliver a poker-faced middle 8). Over it, DELS does what he does best, in this case taking us back to a childhood in which his biggest dream was to be able to turn into something else. It's a proper recollection of childhood, its fears and well as its fun, not one of those fake lists of vintage products like Raleigh Grifters. DELS slams it out in a clear voice which shows the influence of Grime, while the cleverness of his punch lines and metaphors show he ain't kowtowing to any of the many cliches of the form.

Remixes come from a wide range of sources. Kwes is another producer intimately involved with the creation of DELS' forthcoming album and here he builds a tower of eccentric stabs around the vocal, a carnival procession of aural imagination. The hotly-tipped Ghostapes, on the other hand, breaks the vocal down into its constituent elements for a delicate future-World rhythm session. Eli T and Dels himself then turn the original into a reggaefied wobbler. And if that weren't enough, a Micachu remix and revox is due soon.

So that's the audio, but don't stop there. DELS has also made a video in collaboration with highly rated design duo Us, and it's no exaggeration to say it's one of the best promos we've seen in ages. We're not going to say any more but please, please check it!

Press Release for "DELS SIGNS!" :
Big Dada are very pleased to announce that DELS has signed a three album recording deal with the company. A young MC and graphic designer from Ipswich who grew up with a serious Wiley and Outkast habit, Kieren Dickins aka DELS has been making a bit of a stir for a couple of years now. Will Ashon, in charge of A&R at Big Dada, says, "He's the perfect Big Dada artist really - a very talented MC who pushes what he can say with words as hard as he can and combines it with a really adventurous attitude towards music. Oh, and he does his own artwork and videos, too, which makes things much easier!"

Dickins himself says, "I am so happy to be joining a record label with such a rich musical heritage. I have always felt it was important that I signed to a label that wouldn't attempt to compromise my vision. I think that my music has finally found the perfect home in Big Dada. The likes of Joe Hot Chip, Kwes and Micachu are all artists/producers that I loved before I began working on my debut album. So I feel incredibly lucky to be working with such a talented group of producers. Really excited about finishing the album and getting it out there."

DELS' debut album should come out early in 2010. Dickins is working with producers including Joe Goddard of Hot Chip, Micachu, Kwes and Sampha. First single, "Shapeshift," is produced by and features singing from Goddard, plus a remarkable video from Dickins and Us Design Studio. It will be released August 23rd.

If you can't wait that long, are in London, and want to know what all the fuss is about, DELS will also be playing this Friday May 21st at Cargo (onstage 8pm) as part of the Stag & Dagger festival. See you there!
