Deep Street Soul - s/t
(CD) Freestyle Records FSRCD062, 2009-11-16

"Following hot on the heels of Australia's Cookin' On 3 Burners and Randa & the Soul Kingdom, Freestyle's latest antipodean signings Deep Street Soul specialize in the ruffest, downest, gut wrenching, beat heavy fownk. Thankfully 'dinner jazz' will give them indigestion and 'smooth jazz' will bring these guys out in a nasty rash!". Deep Street Soul are funk DJ & drummer Sol Loco, bass player & soul aficionado Papa 'J' Hunter, Steve Cropper disciple' Matt 'MG' Green and Queen of the Hammond Monique 'Mon Cherie' Boggia. Getting together in early 2006 they formed with the simple aim of recapturing some old skool southern flavors they'd DJ' with over the previous decade. Inspired by the breakout of nufunk throughout Europe & the States (not forgetting Osaka Monaurail and Australia's own - The Bamboos) they hit the clubs. Starting with an initial batch of Booker T & Meters covers, these quickly morphed into their own set of break filled funk & soul.

Biography :
Deep Street Soul are funk DJ & drummer Sol Loco, bass player & soul aficionado Papa 'J' Hunter, Cropper lovin' Matt 'MG' Green and Queen of the Hammond Monique 'Mon Cherie' Boggia. Getting together in early 06' they formed with the simple aim of recapturing some old skool southern flavors they'd DJ'ed over the previous decade. Inspired by the breakout of nufunk throughout Europe & the States (not forgetting Osaka Monaurail and Australia's own - The Bamboos) they hit the clubs. Starting with an initial batch of Booker T & Meter's covers, these quickly morphed into their own set of break filled funk & soul.

Teaming with local Melbourne funk legend DJ John Idem in early 07', they released their first 45' getdownHQ/deepstreet strut on his Jaycee's label. The 45' quickly sold out and saw rotation on stations & mixes worldwide. As a result, a new 45' loose caboose/nasty was recorded for Jaycee's early 08' (which also sold out) and a special 3 track digital release was cut for Blair Stafford's Straightup Recordings label.

After hearing these tracks, Freestyle Records (UK) boss Adrian Gibson signed the band to his label and the first LP is due for in the second half of 2009. Recorded in late 2008 this album is funk of the down'n'dirty variety.

Press Release :
"Following hot on the heels of Australia's Cookin' On 3 Burners and Randa & the Soul Kingdom, Freestyles' latest antipodean signings Deep Street Soul specialize in the ruffest, downest, gut wrenching, beat heavy fownk. Quickly snapped up by Freestyle Records, It's not just soulful funk that floats the bands boat, you only have to hear New Yorker Tia Hunters singing on DSS's version of the MC5's proto punk anthem 'Kick Out The Jams' to appreciate the bands love of kicking, forceful and rocking dynamics. This track (released as the A side of Freestyle 45 FSR7058) will shake club foundations around the globe, that's guaranteed.

Monique Boggia certainly knows her way around a classic analogue keyboard, on 'Papa Jumps' she's out to steal Stevie Wonders clavinet crown, whilst keep one eye on her faithful Hammond Organ and on 'Get Up And Get It' she invokes the skanking spirit of late reggae keyboard king Jackie Mittoo proper style!

The albums second vocal cut is a quirky, uber catchy outing, as Londoner Shirley Davis lets rip on this story of the worlds greatest superpower, folding, moolah, dosh, readies, Greenbacks.. in other words CASH!

Deep Street Soul are yet another quality addition to the Freestyle Records roster of artists, they are proud to be punchy, glad to be gritty, delighted to be so dynamic and fantastically forceful. They are raw, real and street.. don't say we didn't warn you!

Speech Debelle - Freedom Of Speech
(CD/LP/Digital) Big Dada Recordings BD193, 2012-02-06

Two years since winning the 2009 Mercury Music Prize for her debut album, Speech Therapy, and having ridden a rollercoaster through life since then, Speech Debelle is ready to drop her second collection of music. Entitled Freedom of Speech, the album sees Speech turning from introspection to stand up, face and engage with the world around her, spitting confident themes of revolution and love. A first taste of the album came in the aftermath of this summer's riots, when Speech reacted immediately, leaking the track Blaze Up A Fire, (also featuring Roots ManuvaRealism), a track about political revolution written months before. Now the build-up begins to the release of Freedom of Speech in early February 2012 with the free download of the track Studio Backpack Rap. From political to musical revolution, Speech describes the track as being "all about virtual instrumentation and an ode to KwesSpeech Therapy, while showcasing just one aspect of her remarkable new album.
