DJ Food - The Search Engine - out on Ninja Tune

DJ Food The Search Engine
DJ Food - The Search Engine
(CD/Digital) Ninja Tune ZENCD176/ZENDNL176, 2012-01-23

Eleven years after the last DJ Food album release (Kaleidoscope), Strictly Kev and various friends, associates and like-minded collaborators return with a new full-length. The Search Engine distills the best parts from three EP’s worth of material into a continuous 56 minute album of unbridled creativity and laser-sharp focus. Collaborations abound in the form of vocal appearances from Natural Self (aka Nathaniel Pearn), JG Thirlwell (Foetus, Steroid Maximus etc.) and The The's Matt Johnson. The latter reprises his vocal on a cover of his own track GIANT, nearly thirty years after its first release. Musical hook-ups include 2econd Class Citizen, who trades sample-attacks with Strictly for the suite of nine tracks that make up the 11 minute Magpie Music. Dr Rubberfunk lends his drumming skills to the opening track and old DJ Food partner PC and Solid Steel's DK add their own ingredients to the mix. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all to those who associate the DJ Food name with the early 90s Jazz Brakes records is just how heavy The Search Engine is. Styled as a kind of psychedelic rock album made with samplers, Strictly Kev has not been afraid the frug the fuck out, with thundering drum work and fuzz bass perhaps the central muscial signature of the work.

DJ Food The Search Engine

Press Release :
Eleven years after the last DJ Food album release ("Kaleidoscope"), Strictly Kev and various friends, associates and like-minded collaborators return with a new full-length. 'The Search Engine' distills the best parts from three EP’s worth of material into a continuous 56 minute album of unbridled creativity and laser-sharp focus.

Collaborations abound in the form of vocal appearances from Natural Self (aka Nathaniel Pearn), JG Thirlwell (Foetus, Steroid Maximus etc.) and The The's Matt Johnson. The latter reprises his vocal on a cover of his own track 'GIANT', nearly thirty years after its first release. Musical hook-ups include 2econd Class Citizen, who trades sample-attacks with Strictly for the suite of nine tracks that make up the 11 minute 'Magpie Music'. Dr Rubberfunk lends his drumming skills to the opening track and old DJ Food partner PC and Solid Steel's DK add their own ingredients to the mix.

While there isn’t a single concept behind the record, certain themes twine their way through the music. In particular, the twin retro-future icons, astronauts and robots, float and bleep their way across the surface of the album, from the Henry Flint cover art onwards. Perhaps best known for his groundbreaking work on the 2000AD comic, Flint gave Kev access to a caché of his personal drawings to colour as well as creating new work specifically for the project.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of all to those who associate the DJ Food name with the early 90s "Jazz Brakes" records is just how heavy "The Search Engine" is. Styled as a kind of psychedelic rock album made with samplers, Strictly Kev has not been afraid the frug the fuck out, with thundering drum work and fuzz bass perhaps the central muscial signature of the work.

Reflecting Strictly’s work as a designer as well as musician (he had to take the whole of 2010 off from recording the record while he did all the design for Ninja’s 20th "XX’ anniversary) the album comes in a number of formats: regular CD digipak, download, comic book with CD and a 7" flexi-disc of a bonus track with an exclusive remix 12", comic and flexi-disc.

As for the title, Kev explains that, "the way we live every day is helped by search engines of many shapes and sizes. Some people think they control and influence how we work and play. In this case, though, the Search Engine could be something waiting to be found out in the vastness of space…" Thrusters on full….

Expect some big announcements about DJ Food over the coming months….

Galactic - Carnivale Electricos - out on Anti- Records

Galactic Carnivale Electricos
Galactic - Carnivale Electricos
(CD/LP/Digital) ANTI-, 2012-02-21

Two years ago we left Galactic with Ya-Ka-May, their heaviest album to date, followed by a long, successful tour. The band did cameos in HBO show TREME and composed a few tracks for PS3 video game Infamous 2 (located in New Orleans, naturellement). Stanton Moore released a record with his trio and another mighty one with Garage à Trois, among other things. Ben Ellman helped Trombone Shorty launch his career with Orleans Avenue, producing his two first records on Verve. So with everyone so busy, a new album this quickly was the last thing we expected. We were wrong. Galactic is now 18 years-old, and it's a strong and creative teenager who can't help partying all night away while Western world - at least its financial and capitalistic side - teeters on the brink. Here comes the brand-new album Carnivale Electricos, to be released on Mardi Gras 2012...

Quantic and Alice Russell with the Combo Bárbaro - Look Around The Corner (single) - out on Tru Thoughts

Quantic and Alice Russell Look Around The Corner
Quantic and Alice Russell with the Combo Bárbaro - Look Around The Corner
(10" vinyl/Digital) Tru Thoughts TRU249, 2012-02-20

The new collaborative full length from Quantic and Alice Russell with the Combo Bárbaro, Look Around The Corner will be released on Tru Thoughts Recordings next april; preceded by the lead single (the title track) out on deluxe 10 inch vinyl and digital in February. One could of course expect some deep Colombian roots stuff, or even maybe, on the opposite, a comeback to the duo neo-classic UK funk sound of some of their previous collaborations. Not at all, this first single is really a surprise, and the biggest influence appearing here is obviously (much-lauded in those pages) arranger and producer Charles Stepney (Minnie Riperton, Terry Callier, Rotary Connection, Marlena Shaw, etc.). Go and check the mix we had published way back in 2006, Charles Is The One if you haven't already! If the whole album's as good and deep as this single, it's sure to be one of the releases of the year! Nuff' said. (Djouls)
