Brownout - Aguilas and Cobras

Brownout Aguilas and Cobras
Brownout - Aguilas and Cobras
(CD) Six Degrees Records SDR1162, 2009-09-15

Adrian Quesada is a busy man. When he’s not performing psychedelic salsa jams with Grammy-nominated Austin outfit Grupo Fantasma or playing backing-guitar for Prince (yes, the artist once again known as Prince), he and his fellow Fantasma-mates are bringing the Latin-funk with critically-acclaimed Brownout and the more laidback but no-less-funky Ocote Soul Sounds. The new Brownout record, Aguilas and Cobras (Eagles & Cobras) features their trademark "hardcore latin funk" coupled with generous amounts of psychedelic experimentation and anchored by driving latin percussion and lots of electric guitar interplay. This crew of musicians has deftly avoided the "retro" and "revival" tags with pride, never falling into generic cookie-cutter funk mold. Aguilas and Cobras continues to carry the afro-latin funk torch into the future by creating fresh grooves which are timeless, honest and filled with their own unique vibe.

Press Release :
Brownout is the psychedelic latin funk alter ego of the acclaimed ensemble, Grupo Fantasma. 2008 saw the release of Brownout’s critically lauded debut album “Homenaje” released on the influential UK label, Freestyle Records that made waves around the world amongst DJs, tastemakers and music fans alike. The Austin Chronicle called it “the sleeper hit of the year” and the band garnered features in such tastemaker publications as Wax Poetics and XLR8R. For much of '08 the musicians toured as the infamous Grupo Fantasma, playing 150+ shows including backing up Prince at Coachella and on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” visiting 8 countries (even Iraq and Kuwait), and making appearances at Bonnaroo and the New Orleans Jazz Fest. Somehow they even found time to release Grupo Fantasma’s "Sonidos Gold" album, which received a Grammy nomination.

Brownout decided to waste no time and use this unstoppable momentum, hitting the studio in winter 2008 to begin recording the follow up to their cult-favorite debut. The resulting record, "Aguilas and Cobras" (Eagles & Cobras) features their trademark "hardcore latin funk" coupled with generous amounts of psychedelic experimentation and anchored by driving latin percussion and lots of electric guitar interplay. This crew of musicians has deftly avoided the "retro" and "revival" tags with pride, never falling into generic cookie-cutter funk mold. "Aguilas and Cobras" continues to carry the afro-latin funk torch into the future by creating fresh grooves which are timeless, honest and filled with their own unique vibe.

Speech Debelle - Freedom Of Speech - out on Big Dada Recordings

Speech Debelle Freedom Of Speech
Speech Debelle - Freedom Of Speech
(CD/LP/Digital) Big Dada Recordings BD193, 2012-02-06

Two years since winning the 2009 Mercury Music Prize for her debut album, Speech Therapy, and having ridden a rollercoaster through life since then, Speech Debelle is ready to drop her second collection of music. Entitled Freedom of Speech, the album sees Speech turning from introspection to stand up, face and engage with the world around her, spitting confident themes of revolution and love. A first taste of the album came in the aftermath of this summer's riots, when Speech reacted immediately, leaking the track Blaze Up A Fire, (also featuring Roots ManuvaRealism), a track about political revolution written months before. Now the build-up begins to the release of Freedom of Speech in early February 2012 with the free download of the track Studio Backpack Rap. From political to musical revolution, Speech describes the track as being "all about virtual instrumentation and an ode to KwesSpeech Therapy, while showcasing just one aspect of her remarkable new album.
