The Payback 7” brings you a taste of the upcoming Tru Thoughts Funk compilation with two brand new raucously funky tracks from Beta Hector featuring Dionne Charles. Beta Hector is the solo project of Simon Hill, founding member of adored British funk band, Baby Charles, who have attracted acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, MOJO Magazine, Craig Charles (BBC 6Music), Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1), DJ Format and Andy Smith, to name a few. These two tracks see Hill hooking up once again with his Baby Charles partner in crime, Dionne Charles, an enthralling and powerful frontwoman; having been compared to Sharon Jones of The Dap Kings, Dionne is known for her unique and boisterous vocals that smoothly ride over a funky, hard hitting drum groove.

Press Release :
The “Payback” 7” brings you a taste of the upcoming Tru Thoughts Funk compilation with two brand new raucously funky tracks from Beta Hector featuring Dionne Charles.

Beta Hector heralds a side-step into new production territory, and “Payback” and B side “Creepin’” see multi- talented instrumentalist Hill playing electric bass, upright bass, guitar and keyboards, then feeding his own live recordings through an experimental electronic mill, creating the raw, gritty sound and vibe heard on both tracks. It’s all live instrumentation, but with an experimental thread of electro, synths and psychedelic delays that weave through a solid funk rhythm, topped off by two incredible vocal turns from Dionne Charles.

Both tracks on this 7” have been signed to Tru Thoughts especially for the ‘Tru Thoughts Funk’ compilation, out in May, adding to a classic super-heavyweight collection of all the best funk songs to have graced Tru Thoughts over the years from an eclectic international roster of talent. The soulful powerhouse vocals of the UK's very own Alice Russell and US legend Spanky Wilson; Kylie Auldist and the horn-led, straight down the line dancefloor punch of The Bamboos, through Saravah Soul channelling '60s Brazil via Noughties East London; the wry, jaunty, almost indie-pop shuffle of The Limp Twins; fast-rising Brighton producer Lack of Afro's boisterous wah wah treatment of New Orleans' Hot 8 Brass Band, and of course, Quantic's trailblazing fusion of funk and soul with Colombian and Caribbean rhythms: you'll find all this and more nestling happily under 'funk' in the Tru Thoughts lexicon.

Previous praise for Dionne Charles & Baby Charles:
“4 STARS” - MOJO
“Dionne Charles’ full throated soul howl is what puts everything over the top.” - Pitchfork
“When it comes to lungs she’s got two pairs.” - Blues & Soul

Speech Debelle - Freedom Of Speech
(CD/LP/Digital) Big Dada Recordings BD193, 2012-02-06

Two years since winning the 2009 Mercury Music Prize for her debut album, Speech Therapy, and having ridden a rollercoaster through life since then, Speech Debelle is ready to drop her second collection of music. Entitled Freedom of Speech, the album sees Speech turning from introspection to stand up, face and engage with the world around her, spitting confident themes of revolution and love. A first taste of the album came in the aftermath of this summer's riots, when Speech reacted immediately, leaking the track Blaze Up A Fire, (also featuring Roots ManuvaRealism), a track about political revolution written months before. Now the build-up begins to the release of Freedom of Speech in early February 2012 with the free download of the track Studio Backpack Rap. From political to musical revolution, Speech describes the track as being "all about virtual instrumentation and an ode to KwesSpeech Therapy, while showcasing just one aspect of her remarkable new album.
