Brazilian-born Amon Tobin first emerged between 1994-1995 with a string of 12" singles on a small London-based record label called 9Bar Records. The album that followed, Adventures In Foam, paved the way for a whole generation of electronic productions and prompted his signing to the prodigious Ninja Tune in 1996. He has since gone on to record seven critically-acclaimed albums under his own name on Ninja that have since helped define the label as a force in musical innovation and diversity. In addition, Amon has produced a small number of radically diverse original scores ranging from George Palfi's cult cinema oddity Taxidermia to Tom Clancy's video game blockbuster Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. The depth and scope of Amon Tobin's work have had a far-reaching influence, garnering respect amongst producers and artists both within and outside electronic music. Whether with the classical avant garde Kronos Quartet or D'n'B legends Noisia, or on his own in some invented form, Amon has established a reputation for musical ingenuity that is unconfined by genre. Over a fifteen-year-long career Amon Tobin remains among one of the most visionary electronic artists of a generation. The 2007 album Foley Room explored the role of found sound in modern day music. Documented on film, the process of recording minute insects to lions, wolves, engines and foley performances culminated in a much- lauded performance at the birthplace of musique concrete, the GRM Theatre in Paris. More recently, the famed London Metropolitan Orchestra performed selected works from a cross-section of his musical repertoire at the Royal Albert Hall. The performance included a piece from his forthcoming studio album due for release in early 2011. Amon Tobin will release 3 albums in 2011: a radical new studio album entitled ISAM, a new Two Fingers album, and an album of remixes of his Chaos Theory soundtrack work.

What is "ISAM"? A transmission from a distant planet? A gateway into an alternate reality? A codename for a new psychotropic? A freshly discovered planet? A secret swinger’s network? A liberation theology? A soundtrack to the ultimate snuff movie? Nonsense? The only sense in town?

Re-drawing and blurring the lines between psychedelia and sci-fi, between art and entertainment, between sound design and melody, Amon Tobin has created the finest, most intense work of his very considerable career, an extension and refinement of everything he has achieved thus far, a crowning achievement in the process that he describes as "re-ordering the things around me."

Tobin’s earliest work, in his own words, "took bits of existing music from old records and tried to find new contexts for them." This led to albums like "Bricolage" and "Supermodified" (the clues being in the titles). Gradually, though, the samples "got smaller and smaller and more processed until they became less about context or reference and more like a physical reincarnation of sounds." This led to the next stage in Tobin’s development, his last album, "Foley Room," where he followed a Cage-ian tack and "looked at all sounds as potentially musical," ending up using his own field recordings of lions, wolves, bees, factories and so on. With "ISAM" Amon started with field recordings but then synthesized the sounds and built them into actual playable instruments. With these instruments he then created the album. "It’s by far the most exciting development in my personal quest for some control over nature," Tobin explains. "Anything from a grain of found sound to my own voice can be transformed into something new."

The result is a record of uncharacteristic depth and richness (intellectual, emotional and aural), one which sets your synapses crackling with dread and beauty, reminiscence and speculation, or just the pure apprehension of sound, accomplishing most of the hopes and dreams of dubstep, for instance, without even bothering to limit itself to having to be dubstep (which isn’t to say it doesn’t have some of the most terrifying bass rumbles your sternum will feel this side of Hell). Rarely has a piece of music made the listener feel so completely immersed in a new world, with all the strangeness, excitement and, occasionally, fear that entails. Once you begin listening to "ISAM," anything written about it becomes redundant. A truly outstanding piece of work, it should establish once and for all Amon Tobin’s well-earned right to sit at the very top table of electronic music making.

More Info :
Try as we might to protect our artists' recordings until they're ready to be released, create exciting campaigns to expose the leftfield/ interesting/ worthwhile music that we believe in, to the widest audience and on some of the smallest budgets, and sell enough records to keep doing so; some people just don't get it. A nameless person who calls himself a journalist has decided that he, not us, is best placed to release the new Amon Tobin album, and to do so for free, online. We know these things happen, and we know that not everyone realises how much is invested in ambitious, groundbreaking tours, collaborations with brilliant artists and lovingly designed packaging... It still hurts. The man is not having it stuck to him. A faceless corporation is not being dealt a blow. All that happens is a lot of great ideas and music come under threat.

All of which is a long and frustrated way of saying that we're moving forward the digital release of Amon Tobin's masterpiece; ISAM. We know that for the fans who've taken the time to unearth music made for reasons other than pure commerce, hearing an album is available without actually hearing it is a slap in the face. We'd like everyone who's invested that time and energy on the career of an artist like Amon Tobin to have the chance to own the album, in the form he and us intended, as soon as anyone else does. We're sure you'll see why we took so much care over it in the first place.

ISAM is now available digitally from the Ninjashop and iTunes. Physical formats will be released 23rd May, including a 6 panel gatefold CD, Double Heavyweight LP with printed inner sleeves, and a limited edition CD Artbook featuring exclusive images and an essay by John Doran. A 24-bit WAV download option will also be available.
