Grant Phabao Live Soul System Dubtape Vol 2

After producing albums and hit singles with Studio One's legends The Lone Ranger, Carlton Livingston, The Jays, The Silvertones, Parisian dubmeister Grant Phabao was given the Jamaican stamp of approval of "the producer who brings back the original Lee Perry and King Tubby sounds with a modern twist". Phabao expanded his output with roots jamaican remixes for artists such as Alice Russell, Nostalgia 77 or Quantic (Tru Thoughts), Ty (Big Dada), George Clinton… and spectacular mashups & bootlegs: Cee-Lo, Q-Tip, Roots Manuva, Erykah Badu, Jurassic 5, Marvin Gaye, among others, were given the unique Grant Phabao treatment for extended dancefloor pleasure! He's now presenting his first live dub mixing experience with the help of long time collaborator DJ The Dreadless Soldier (aka Erik Rug), the GRANT PHABAO SOUL SYSTEM, a DJ set spiced up with hip hop, dub and a whole lot of echo. Pepe Deluxé - Queen Of The Wave - out on Catskills Records

Pepe Deluxe Queen of The Wave
Pepe Deluxé - Queen Of The Wave
(CD/LP) Catskils RIDCD23, 2012-01-30

Queen of the Wave is the fourth record from Finnish duo Pepe Deluxé. Their first album, Super Sound, released in 1999 on Catskills Records, has aged quite much since then. Their second one, Beatitude, from 2003, saw them starting to write real songs, with arrangements to be filed between DJ Shadow, The Herbaliser and The Beatles. It was one of the major electronic album releases of the year. Pepe Deluxé came back in 2007 with Spare Time Machine, a tripped-out, psychedelic masterpiece that didn't really fit in any category anymore. So to say we were expecting this new album is no exaggeration, and this is indeed a new, in-your-face, kind of eccentric thing. From bizarre pop to 60's psychedelic rock, from science-fiction to metaphysics, from heavy drums to pastoral folk, this is an intense piece of music excellence that won't fit in the big beat/future jazz niche the band used to blend in. Favorite tracks include the prog-rock-ish Queenswave, the big-beatlesy A Night And A Day, the trip-hop ballad My Flaming Thirst and the ravaging Queen-on-peyote The Storm. Already a contender for the best albums of the year selection!

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley - Simigwa
(LP) Essiebons EBL 6133, 1975 / bootleg reissue by Dix Records, 2010 / soon to be official reissued by Academy LPs, 2010

A very limited reissue of extremely rare Afro beat album from Ghana, 1000 copies only... alas it's a bootleg and you really should wait for the Academy LPs official reissue to happen later this year. Those US guys have a quality standard so much higher than cheap bootleg releases! And the album should be worth the wait cos' it's and amazingly rare 1975 Afro-funk album from Ghana! Gyedu-Blay Ambolley's name became synonymous with the 'Simigwa' dance craze, with the "Me Simigwa" single rocketing him to stardom in the mid 70s. This album followed, and is packed with infectious Afro-funk dancefloor treats - raw vocals, hot Hammond, big brass and those extended percussive grooves that can't fail to get you in the mood for dancing.

Interview de Stephen Coates (The Real Tuesday Weld, french version)

The Real Tuesday Weld
Stephen Coates (The Real Tuesday Weld)

Son nouvel album, Songs for The Last Werewolf (x.php/tag/SIX%20DEGREES">Six Degrees Records/USA), sort le 16 janvier.
