Brooklyn-based soul, dub, electronic artist/producer Jay Spaker aka J-san's musical journey has been a shape shifting experience spanning 20 years of soul & roots music. Son of radical vietnam veteran father & Okinawan mother J-san was raised on the road, living with artists, musicians, ganja growers and hustlers. He was an original member of John Brown's Body in the 90s, then went on to form dub rock/jam band J-san & The Analogue Sons during the the next decade, a band described as Bob Marley meets M.I.A. produced by Manu Chao… After a few featurings, including vocalist on 10ft Ganja Plant's album Bush Rock released in 2009, J-san has launched two new bands, Double Tiger, an electronic dub / dubstep project who's just released the No Give Up single on Hydra Records Japan, and J-san and The Big Mean, a rock/reggae/afro project fusing the rhythms of Afrobeat and R&B with the sounds of Dub and Soul to make your body move. When their first afro-reggae single Moving Too Fast reached Paris DJs' shores, we contacted J-san right away, offering him to try and have Grant Phabao dress the song with pure Jamaican roots vibes. The man was already a Paris DJs follower and we hooked up instantly. This deadly rough & tough remix is the another step for Paris DJs in their ongoing collaborations with brothers from Brooklyn and we can hope that J-san and Grant Phabao will do a proper EP together at some point!

Paris DJs are proud to announce a worldwide exclusive remix competition using the vocals of Studio One legend, one of Jamaica's most influential early dancehall DJs, The Lone Ranger. He was twice voted number 1 deejay on the island, in 1979 and 1980. He helped pioneer a newly rhythmic, on-the-beat rhyming style that led DJ toasting into the modern age, and punctuated his lyrics with bizarre exclamations and sound effects ('bim' and 'ribbit' were his favorites) that made him perhaps the most imaginative stylist of his time. Paris DJs are giving you the opportunity to remix the Lone Ranger/Grant Phabao tribute to Steve Jobs track 'The Iphone Connection', the first single from the brand new Paris DJs label, available on iTunes. The vocal acapella from the song is available to download below (the original version of the tune being available here). We want you to build your own unique track behind The Lone Ranger's amazing vocals and let his producer Grant Phabao decide who has created the best remix. Add you own beats, instrumentals, flip an old version/riddim or re-interpret the vocal below - whatever is clever, we want to hear how good you can make The Lone Ranger sound. Released early 2011, Simmerdown, featuring stunning vocals from Josa Peit, was the first single to be lifted from the latest Nostalgia 77 album, The Sleepwalking Society, released late March 2011. We've been active supporters of Nostalgia 77's measureless talent since day one and some of you might remember the reggae remix our resident producer Grant Phabao did on N77's Seven Nation Army cover with Alice Russell… It was high time to try and rework a new Nostalgia 77 track and we had the chance to get a visit from Marco Benevento, one of our favorite keyboards players along with John Medeski and Jackie Mittoo. Well you put musicians in a studio, what happens? They play together, so Marco ended playing organ and then clavinet for a reggae remix of Simmerdown Phabao was working on… This track was hidden in our closet for a year, and when we learned that Nostalgia 77 was coming on play in Paris on February 16th at La Bellevilloise, we offered his label, Tru Thoughts, to put it up for free as a virtual release on Paris DJs. You won't hear this kind of artists combination anywhere else so we hope you'll enjoy the unique groove & spirit in there. And we hope to see you tonite (feb 16) at la Bellevilloise!

The iPhone Connection song is a tribute to the co-founder and CEO of Apple who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer this summer. It was recorded at Paris DJs studios just a few days before Steve Jobs passed away. Jamaican DJ The Lone Ranger is on vocal duties with French dubmeister Grant Phabao at the controls & playing all instruments. The Lone Ranger is one of Jamaica's most influential early dancehall DJs. He was twice voted N°1 deejay on the island, in 1979 and 1980. He helped pioneer a newly rhythmic, on-the-beat rhyming style that led DJ toasting into the modern age, and punctuated his lyrics with bizarre exclamations and sound effects ("bim" and "ribbit" were his favorites) that made him perhaps the most imaginative stylist of his time. He had originally recorded The Walkman Connection way back in 1984 (on "DJ Daddy" / Techniques), now fully updated to 2011 as The Iphone Connection !

The Macintosh and its Finder application were revolutionnary for the way we create. Then one day Napster happened, soon followed by AudioGalaxy and many others. While the big music business was struggling with the limit of its ecosystem and the paradigm that had come with the use of mp3 files, Steve Jobs changed the way we consumed music with the iPod and the iTunes music store. Soon after that, he changed the way we consume information with the iPhone.

22 years-old Selah Sue (real name Sanne Putseys) is a Belgian musician and songwriter you might have heard about already. She was featured on Cee-Lo's latest LP The Lady Killer, and released in march this year her first album, Selah Sue. She listened to a lot of ragga and reggae in high school and, together with soul, hip hop and some slower tunes, the style has become an essential part of her repertoire. She even wrote two ragga songs herself (Raggamuffin and Fyah Fyah)... She gets here the unique Grant Phabao Jamaican treatment, with this hip hop-ish roots reggae remix of Crazy Vibes.

Gil Scott-Heron left us at the end of May. His bluesology, black American music and message marked us forever. Sandra Nkaké and Jî Drû have written and recorded in one night an homage piece, A Place For You!, available here, as well as a bunch of remixes - including a nice one from Loik Dury and a cool one from Grant Phabao, check it and download it here. Better late than never, Doctor L also pays his dues, with his amazing remix/tribute featuring Allonymous and Sandra Nkaké voicing words from Gil Scott-Heron with class and style. Production is 21st century soul jazz at its best, one the best Doctor L tracks we've heard in... well... weeks!! Allonymous is killing out there too, all in all it's another incredible Paris DJs virtual release!!

Gil Scott-Heron left us at the end of May. His bluesology, black American music and message marked us forever. Sandra Nkaké and Jî Drû have written and recorded in one night an homage piece, A Place For You!. Joined by a bunch of friends who felt as much concerned as they were, on a riff from Marvin Gaye's Inner City Blues, they sing a chorus tribute to Scott-Heron and borrow a text extracted from I Think I'll Call It Morning. The original track was mixed by Blackjoy, with remixes from Mark de Clive-Lowe, Doctor L, Loik Dury, Eric Legnini, Jeff Sharel feat. Karl The Voice, DJ Oil or Vadim Vernay (all available here). Oh! and of course from your favorite soundmaster and reggae producer Grant Phabao, who spectacularly manages to take the song to Kingston, Jamaica - but if you're a regular Paris DJs listener, you should be used to it by now...

Our good ol' friend and doublebass player Lawkyz has just launched a new project, Versus, between hip hop, jazz, funk and blaxploitation. The band is playful and fun, sounding like early stuff from The Herbaliser with a distinguished French taste for Jazz musings. Their album will be out january 2012. Meanwhile, they've asked many of their friends for remixes and the n°1 reggae producer worldwide, Grant Phabao, who had already worked with Lawkyz in the past on some still unreleased tracks with Amayo from Antibalas, agreed to put his magic hands on the Mr Blue piece. The result is astounding as always, Versus are immediately transported to Jamaican coasts and you'll be breakin' to hip hop while bouncing to reggae at the same time with a big smile on your face!!!

Ebo acknowledges the influence of US jazz rockers Blood Sweat & Tears and – less obviously, perhaps – Deep Purple on this easy going mid-tempo piece, written a few years before it was recorded, when Osibisa and various 'blaxploitation' themes were hip. "I was trying to fuse rock and jazz together with highlife," Ebo recalls. "This kind of music was ahead of its time – not very popular when we recorded it!"

Following his recent studio album with Afrobeat Academy, Love And Death, his first international solo release, Ghanaian highlife guitar legend Ebo Taylor teams up again with Strut Records for a long overdue definitive compilation of his seminal 1970s recordings, Life Stories.

During Ghana's highlife explosion in the 1950s and '60s following wartime highlife pioneers like E.T. Mensah, Ebo Taylor made his name as a prolific composer, arranger and frontman leading two of Ghana's greatest big bands - Stargazers and Broadway Dance Band. Moving to London to study music in 1962 alongside West African luminaries like Fela Kuti and Peter King, Taylor formed the Black Star Highlife Band and began incorporating jazz elements into traditional highlife forms.

Returning to Ghana, Taylor became an in-house arranger and producer for Dick Essilfie-Bondzie's Essiebons label, working with other major Ghanaian stars like C.K. Mann and Pat Thomas. Through the '70s, he then recorded a number of solo projects, exploring unique fusions and borrowing elements from regional Ghanaian folk music, Afrobeat, jazz, soul and funk.

Life Stories revisits this heyday of Taylor's work, focusing on his solo albums and some of his lesser known side projects including the dynamite Apagya Show Band and short-lived Taylor-led combos Assase Ase, Super Sounds Namba and The Pelikans. The selection also touches on his writing and production work for C.K. Mann and a collaboration recording with fellow member of early '70s nightclub band Blue Monks, Pat Thomas.

Tracks include the anthemic "Heaven," sampled by Usher on his hit with Ludacris, "She Don't Know," the original version of the poignant "Love And Death" and the rare 15-minute nugget, "Aba Yaa." The package features rare photos, original album artwork and sleeve notes by Soundway Records' Miles Cleret.

Ebo Taylor Life Stories will be released in 2CD / 2LP / digital formats. He will be touring with Afrobeat Academy from late January 2011.

Kinny – aka Caitlin Simpson – was born and raised in Canada and has a mixture of Jamaican, Native Canadian Indian, French and Swedish heritage. She sings jazz, reggae and soul for Brighton's Tru Thoughts label, on which she released two albums, Forgetting To Remember (2005, with Espen Horne), and Idle Forest of Chit Chat (2009, with Souldrop, TM Juke, Unforscene, Hint, Diesler, the Quantic Soul Orchestra and Nostalgia 77!). Her 2008 single Enough Said with the QSO was a huge hit in our books.

Grant Phabao ranks among the greatest multi-instrumentists/producers of his time. After 2 dub albums (as Tnargoabapah), 4 thematic albums with the T.I.M.E.C. collective, and 4 reggae albums with Jamaican veterans The Lone Ranger, Carlton Livingston, The Jays and The Silvertones, he's now hard at work with fellow Paris-based musical genius Doctor L on a series of collaborative concept albums for the brand new Colored-Inc. label (The Black Cat, Down By The River Side, One Foot In Jail).

Some of you discovered Kologbo on stage at the Afrofunk party we organized last summer with Ebo Taylor & The Poets Of Rhythm. Some others already knew he was the tenor guitar player from Fela Kuti's Afrika 70 and he now plays on stage with Tony Allen. Some of you might even have heard the Remember Fela Anikulapo Kuti album he released in 2007 with Berlin's heaviest afrobeat ensemble Afrobeat Academy... Well he's now preparing a new album called Africa is the Future, produced by Loik Dury and to be relased early 2010!! Biography :
Guitar legend Oghene Kologbo was born in Warri, Nigeria in 1957. His father was a well known highlife musician. When Kologbo was a teenager, he began performing with the revolutionary Afrobeat master Fela Kuti. Kologbo went on to record more than 50 sides with Africa 70. He played the hypnotic tenor guitar lines, but often recorded bass and rhythm guitar too. Kologbo was Fela's personal assistant and 'tape recorder'. That is, it was his job to remember the melodies Fela would sing to him late at night, then teach them to the band at rehearsal the next day. In 1978, after a show at the Berlin Jazz Festival, Kologbo left the band (along with Tony Allen and a few others) and stayed in Berlin.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Kologbo worked with the legendary but short-lived Roots Anabo. He also toured and recorded with King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen, and Brenda Fassie, among others.

In 2005, Kologbo began working with the Afrobeat Academy, Berlin's heaviest afrobeat ensemble. Their first single was released on Rabbi Records in 2006. Their full length CD Remember Fela Anikulapo Kuti was released on Lion's Ark in September 2007. In 2008 he moved to France to join Tony Allen's band as tenor guitar.In 2009 he started recording in Paris his new album: Africa Is The Future, produced by Loik Dury (out spring 2010).

LE DAMN DOG is a hellhound of a new project from top Parisian DJ-producer Erik Rug and DJ-MC Dynamax from the South Bronx.
The surprise element is the musical tree on which the pair have chosen to cock their leg: a slavering mix of, hiphop and rock'n'roll delivered with pure punk attitude.

A psychedelic project re-unifying old pals Doctor L and Mister Baby (from french funk band F.F.F.), Kactus Hunters is quite amazing... Melting psyched pop, astral rock, abstract hip hop and free jazz into futuristic downtempo funk, the album Unlimited Land released in 2006 has been blowing minds ever since with its malicious audio and visual hallucinations. Biography :
One of the most critically acclaimed and best-selling independent hip-hop artists of this era, Lyrics Born is not the type to sit still. While recording his fourth solo album, completing new projects, and making decisions at Quannum Projects, he still averaged over 150 sold-out shows a year. He's a whirlwind.

His breakthrough solo debut, Later That Day, was a huge indie seller and one of the top 5 most critically acclaimed American hip-hop records of 2003 alongside Jay-Z's The Black Album and Outkast's Love Below/Speakerboxxx. With the release of Everywhere At Once, rapper/producer Lyrics Born finds himself part of a new vanguard of hip-hop artists like Gnarls Barkley, M.I.A., and Kanye West who are pushing the edge with compelling yet instantly accessible sounds.

These are parts of my experiences so I just wanted to talk about it." The album reveals much about one of the most beloved artists in the game.

His 1997 debut with Lateef the Truth Speaker, Latyrx, sold 100,000 for his influential indie label, SoleSides. When the label was reborn as Quannum Projects, the album he helmed, Quannum Spectrum, yielded him an international hit with "I Changed My Mind". His day-in-the-struggle concept album, Later That Day, featured "Callin' Out", a monster crossover that lodged at 1 at the influential rock station LIVE 105 for 5 weeks. Same !@$ Different Day collected new tracks and alternate versions of tracks and became Quannum Projects' fastest seller. Overnite Encore captured the excitement and intensity of LB's live show, and produced another chart-topper, "I'm Just Raw".

Lyrics Born has been one of the most licensed hip-hop artists in the world, with placements on Diet Coke, Motorola, Nokia, and Vans commercials, TV shows such as "Entourage", "Six Feet Under", "What About Brian", "Gossip Girl", and "Gilmore Girls", films like Michael Mann's "Collateral" and Justin Lin's "Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift", and videogames by EA Sports, 2K Sports and Atari.
