(CD/Digital) Barbès Records / Crammed Discs CRAW82, 2012-05-28

Chicha Libre is a Brooklyn collective made up of French, American, Venezuelan and Mexican musicians who play a mixture of latin rhythms, surf and psychedelia. Canibalismo is their second album after the superb Sonido Amazonico from 2009. Their bandleader Olivier Conan has also produced the ground-breaking Roots of Chicha compilations, which we urge you to give a listen if you haven't already. Chicha is a Peruvian psychedelic surf-rock derivative of Cumbia from the late sixties, and Chicha Libre are bringing a 'modern' production treatment to the style, to the amazement of all (open) ears. We played the overly fun Wagner cover of The Ride of The Valkyries in our recent mix for the Friday Night Session radio show in California, and haven't forgotten about our podcast subscribers, since we asked Mr Conan to cook for Paris DJs a mix of Cumbia covers for our Molesting Laura series. We'll publish this one soon, along with an exclusive interview… Stay connected!

Note : This album was originally released on Gapophone Records (GAPO LP 013) in Ghana.

Pat Thomas biography :
Born 1951, Kumasi, Ghana. The wave of disco and reggae that swept Africa in the mid-70s created differing responses: some musicians pulled away from playing imported music entirely, others adopted it and adapted it to their own purposes. One of the latter category is highlife vocalist Thomas, who made his name with his band the Sweet Beans.

He was brought up by his uncle, Onyina, a celebrated local bandleader and the owner of a record store in Kumasi. In 1969 he joined the Broadway Dance Band, leaving a year later to join the Uhuru Dance Band for a tour of the UK. Returning to Ghana, he played with Ebo Taylor's Blue Monks, spent a year in the Cote D'lvoire and then formed the Sweet Beans in 1973.

Like many Ghanaian bands, the Sweet Beans received sponsorship from a government body, in this case the Cocoa Marketing Board. They released False Lover in 1974, then split and re-formed as Marijata, releasing Marijata and Pat Thomas Introduces Marijata, after which Thomas released two reggae-influenced solo albums, Let's Think It Over and Asawado.

He then left for Berlin, where he recorded the classic 1980, a hi-tech mix of reggae and disco-highlife that featured George Darko on lead guitar. The albums that followed his return to Ghana abandoned electronic slickness in favour of a return to roots: Sweeter Than Honey dug into traditional dagomba rhythms.

When Thomas does hit form he is hard to beat; his 1985 output included three hastily recorded albums, including the disastrously under-mixed Pat Thomas And Ebo Taylor and one blistering triumph, Asanteman, which combined a history of the Ashante kingdom, kicked off by a blast of traditional horn playing with solid production.

By this time, Thomas had discovered football, which would provide lyrics and conceptual themes for his songwriting throughout the rest of the decade. In 1984, he had recorded the mini-album Asante Kotoko, dedicated to the Ghanaian club which had won the Africa Cup in 1983.

The title track was played over the speakers at the club's home pitch and occasionally played live at half-time by a local highlife band. In 1985, Thomas went to work on a further Asante album, to commemorate the club's 50th anniversary. In the late 80s Thomas spent some time in Canada, before making a memorable (but ill-publicized) comeback in 1991 with Sika Ye Mogya.

A very limited reissue of extremely rare Afro beat album from Ghana, 1000 copies only... alas it's a bootleg and you really should wait for the Academy LPs official reissue to happen later this year. Those US guys have a quality standard so much higher than cheap bootleg releases! And the album should be worth the wait cos' it's and amazingly rare 1975 Afro-funk album from Ghana! Gyedu-Blay Ambolley's name became synonymous with the 'Simigwa' dance craze, with the "Me Simigwa" single rocketing him to stardom in the mid 70s. This album followed, and is packed with infectious Afro-funk dancefloor treats - raw vocals, hot Hammond, big brass and those extended percussive grooves that can't fail to get you in the mood for dancing.

Who is Gyedu-Blay Ambolley ?

Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, affectionately known as the "Simigwa Do Man", was born in the port city of Sekondi-Takoradi, in the Western Region of Ghana - West Afrika. The multi-talented, international, Ghanaian musician, celebrated his "Silver Jubilee" in music in 1998.

This versatile, irrepressible singer, songwriter, producer and "musical-life-force" exploded on the music scene about twenty-five years ago with the jazzy highlife sounds he called 'SIMIGWA'.

Ambolley's early years of musical interest dates back to the age of eight, when he began playing with his father's flute until he was able to teach himself how to play. His formal musical training came at the age of fourteen under the apprenticeship of "Uncle Bonku" who taught him the guitar.

The young music enthusiast continued to learn the rudiments of music from the late' Sammy Lartey and Ebo Taylor and contributes his free style of singing to such mentors as James Brown, Ray Charles, and 'the late' Sam Cook.

The aspiring musician was excitingly impressed with the music he heard on the popular radio show, "Voice of America Jazz Hour." The show featured such jazz giants as Jimmy Smith, Max Roach, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Eckstine, all became part of Ambolley's early musical experience.

Biography :
Producer & DJ: In the early nineties, and as one half of Strangebrew, Martin released 2 albums and a handful of singles for Rob's Records, founded by the sorely-missed Rob Gretton, manager of New Order, and also home to Sub Sub (later to become Doves) and A Certain Ratio amongst others. It was a new sound and it was only with the simultaneous emergence of the likes of The Dust Brothers, Depth Charge and Red Snapper did some bright spark come up with the term "Trip Hop" and a new genre was born.

Moving quickly on, Martin teamed up with beak-head extrordinaire, Martin Desai (engineer for the Twisted Nerve label) to form J-Walk. They released a series of 3 collectable 45rpm singles on the Pleasure label, another branch of the Rob Gretton empire. One of these tracks, the classic "Soul Vibration" went on to be licensed and used for ad campaigns many times worldwide, as well as being staple background music for the BBC and ITV broadcasting channels.

As a result, J-Walk signed to Eastwest and released the critically acclaimed but sorely-overlooked album "A Night On The Rocks", promoting it with support slots for Nightmares On Wax and Aim, playing at such venues as the Shepherd's Bush Empire, The Kentish Town Forum and Manchester's The Ritz, along with an appearance at Midem's "Best Of British" showcase in Cannes, along with Ladytron and David Holmes' Free Association.

Along the way, J-Walk have lent their sound in remixing Nitin Sawhney, Bebel Gilberto, The Sugarbabes, Alfie, Rae & Christian, Baaba Maal, Kings Of Convenience and Only Child, as well as remixing Manuel Gottsching's much-sampled electronic classic "E2-E4".

During this time Martin also managed to run the Fat City record shop for several years, and contributed tracks to the Fat City Recordings label's acclaimed series of "Mystic Brew" compilations, most notably Sand Steppin, which has since appeared on mix compilations such as N.O.Ws "DJ KICKS" and Andy Smiths "Document" Vol.2. He has since followed this up with a solo album "No Room In The City For Big Hearts Like Ours", which featured guests such as The Nextmen, Riton, Rich Medina, Ambersunshower, and MC Wrec.

After getting fucked over royally by previous label and recording partner, martin brew aka j-walk has finished recording the new album. release date to follow soon.

As a DJ, Martin has played and all over the world, taking in New York, London, Paris, Munich (everybody talk about....), Oslo, Berlin, Bergen, Vienna, Hamburg, Turkey, Moscow, Edinburgh, Dublin...the list goes on. He has also played at hundreds of clubs in the U.K over the years including "Friends & Family" nights and residencies in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Newcastle, Sheffield, Glasgow, and Belfast. Having played alongside everyone from Dr. Bob Jones to Kenny Carpenter, from Afu-Ra to Breakestra, Martin is comfortable of taking his brand of fuzzy funk to everybody everywhere...
He has just completed the new album Heartbreakers and Rumpshakers, due out in 2009. He also managed the Fat City shop for several years, as well as releasing material on Grand Central and Fat City. He’s currently resident at Centro and Takin Over.
