April 2013 was not the most active month we've had so far on the CD and vinyl front from other labels and artists. Thankfuly Nik Weston sent us a trilogy of his latest and upcoming releases on Mukatsuku Records, Ping Pong Promotion in France fed us with news from the Ninja Tune and Big Dada labels and the expanded edition of the Pepe Deluxé album, Tru Thoughts Recordings, Tramp Records and Analog Africa who kept on being the most faifhful labels we've been working with in the recent years, plus a few guests we've been in touch with who don't get much exposure in France, such as Stonephace Stabbins or The Greyboy Allstars. And of course the four Paris DJs releases of the month, something our readers and listeners should be used to, since we started putting out a new single or album every week for quite a while now. Our new compilation 'We Are The Fire Inside Your Mind' has just been released, but we'll come back to it next month. Meanwhile, artists & labels may submit tracks for the next compilation 'Rise Of The Troubadour Warriors', which we've already started working on. From the Mukastsuku label run by Nik Weston come some very very very good and limited vinyl for the most demanding global DJs out there. First of all, there's the second volume of the 'Muka Edits' series of Afro-Disco-Boogie goodies from the past, re-edited and re-mastered for maximum dancefloor efficiency. The bouncing boogie of 'Afro Disco Connection is irresistible. 'Sao Paulo Brazilian Groove Thang' is an instrumental edit of a 1986 track by Sandra De Sá and that means serious digging, really! On the flip, 'Bassline Frenzy' leans towards the electro-funk side of disco, while 'Are You Ready Now' steps into pure Nigerian vocal disco. Don't pass on this limited 12 inch (500 copies only), no digital, with a hand-written number. Then there's the new GUYNAMUKAT 12 inch, 'Nik Weston presents Archway Riviera Tropical Jam EP' in its beautiful Mukatsuku packaging, on a tropical/deep house vibe that fits the modern 'Nu Disco' tag… And finally the fourth volume of the 'Afro Funk Gems' 45s, with the ultra rare private afro funk of ''Nande' with beautiful strings from the Senegalese African Soul Band, backed by Columbian Funk from Wganda Kenya - essential vinyl for those who like unusual afro grooves!! More kings of the funky afro reissues with Analog Africa and the third volume of the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou series and it's a must-have, once again, gathering 14 tracks of West African cosmic Blues, Jazz, Rumba and Soul. Old school Jungle lovers rejoice, UK pioneer Rebel MC is back, calling himself Congo Natty now, with a new album 'Jungle Revolution', out on Big Dada Records mid-june and mixed by Adrian Sherwood. The flame of ragga jungle from the late 80s/early 90s is burning again, drenched in a deep rub-a-dub sound, dancefloors are gonna jump & twist all over England once again! But the revival of the ragga sound doesn't stop here. With the reissue of the classic masterpiece from the London Posse of MCs Bionic and Rodney P,'Gangster Chronicles', it's the early 90s once again for UK hip hop. But that's not all! If you still had the original piece of genius from 1990 in your alphabetically sorted hip hop records shelves, between Living Legends and Lone Catalysts, you're in for a surprise with the 'Definitive Collection' to be reissued by Tru Thoughs Recordings roughly a month from now, with an additional & massive CD including 4 cool, exclusive, previously unheard tracks, and two handfuls of new remixes. Not many will be able to not stand up and dance to the Jungle Remix of 'Money Mad' by Drumagick, to not nod at the sound of Bogle's remix of 'How's Life In London', to not roll a phat one while grooving to Wrongtom's remix of 'Money Mad' - and we're not even talking baout the leftfield reworks by Steve Mason or Hint… 'Definitive' indeed.

On the reggae front, Parisian Grant Phabao embraces the past, taking Doctor L's 'Sweet Life' and its lucious vocals from slam master Allonymous on a deep and dubby odyssey to Kingston, Jamaica, during the 70s… The unstoppable French producer also found some time to cook some new riddims for Carlton Livingston - whose 'Cramp & Paralyze', is another reggae classic, a great singalong tune, driven by a rolling and booming bassline, on a late 70s/early 80s tip - and the Lone Ranger inna combination stylee with Echo Minott, urging their fellow countrymen to go back to the roots, plant their own vineyard and become farmer men again, on a brand new, elastic and everlastingly groovy reggae riddim. And if that wasn't enough, Grant Phabao also started a new series of collaboration with saxophonist/singer/poet Gregsky, starting with 'La Danse Du Shadow', a surprising Roots Reggae number reminiscent of late 70s Serge Gainsbourg's 'Aux Armes et Cætera' cultural blend of French Chanson and Jamaican Reggae - with its deep instrumental dub version, 'Le Dub Du Shadow' , on the b-side for the spiritual souls out there.

Less than a year after releasing 'The Life & Times Of…', The Hot 8 Brass Band are back with a new full-length, 'Tombstone'. The band, who gained a large exposure thanks to featurings in Spike Lee's documentary 'When the Levees Broke' and the recent HBO series 'Treme', are dedicating this album to the musicians friends they recently lost.. Four band members of the band between the ages of 17 and 25 have died due to handgun violence in the last years. As a response to loss & tragedy, this new album is poignant, emotional, featuring all original material. New Orleans backbeat & horns at its best, the new soulful & funky album is playing on repeat at Paris DJs. On the jazz front, Norway's Jaga Jazzist, always hard to pin down, have released what we felt as the album of the month for April 2013. We never had the chance to hear their previous album, 'One-Armed Bandit', so we lost track of where the experimental jazz band was heading, but recorded live with a full orchestra, this new release is a masterpiece of cinematic & symphonic psychedelic jazz-funk, bridging the gap between Danny Elfman's orchestral scores and Frank Zappa's most inventive pieces from the early 70s. Just brilliant!

Legendary UK free-jazz saxophonist Larry "Stonephace" Stabbins came to our attention in 2009 with the trip hop-tagged 'Stonephace' album, produced with Portishead guitarist Adrian Utley and rave DJ Krzysztof Oktalski, released on Tru Thoughts Recordings. He's played with British jazz pianist and composer Keith Tippett in Centipede and lots of his other bands, he formed British latin-soul ensemble Working Week in the early 80s. And numerous other bands… Stonephace Stabbins is his latest project, featuring Mercury Prize-nominated pianist Zoe Rahman, Crispin 'Spry' Robinson on percussion, Karl Rasheed Abel on bass and Pat Illingworth on drums, for a synthesis of Exploratory Jazz with Groove, loads of percussion & eastern modes, and Transcendental Euphoria, with inspiration from Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler, John Coltrane and McToy Tyner. The incantatory album of the month, a superb slice of old-school uplifting UK spiritual jazz.

While The Poets Of Rhythm started the deep funk revival in 1993 in Europe with their album 'Practice What You Preach', it was The Greyboy Allstars who were their active counterparts the following year with the groundbreaking 'West Coast Boogaloo With Fred Wesley' LP. They've influenced a whole generation of bands playing improvisational music in a funk format and arrived on the scene one or two years before the Dap-Kings, known as the Soul Providers in their early years at Pure and Desco records… Historical clarification aside, let's get back to this album, only their 5th in a 20 years-long career filled with many other solo projects from saxophonist Karl Denson, keyboard maestro Robert Walter, guitarist Elgin Park or bassist Chris Stillwell - Aaron Redfield having replaced Zak Najor on drums after the previous album in 2007. With both feet grounded in 60s and 70s soul-jazz, 'Inland Emperor' sees the band adding some hints of growling electronics for a cinematic & eclectic record focusing on songwriting rather than improvisational sequences, re-inventing American acid-jazz for the 21st century. A band we would LOVE to see play in Paris!!

Released at the end of last year in the UK, Pepe Deluxé's new edition of their 'Queen Of The Wave' album is just plain astonishing. Packaged in a 64 pages book filled with encyclopedic information on the Finnish electronic band's music and crazy-looking designs in the vein of Terry Gilliam's collages blended with comicbooks and Bollywood graphic styles, this deluxe reissue also adds an album's worth of exclusive tracks, interludes and outtakes on a second CD, and a DVD packed with videos, instrumental versions, samples, drum breaks, artwork and wallpapers! If the original record was an opera pop jewel, this augmented edition is the ultimate thing, an aural and visual feast, and an unexpected twist on an already grandiose psychedelic rock opera.

We'll be closing this month's selection with a top quality compilation from Perfect Toy Records to be released june 10th, 'Shake-A-Leg Vol.2', cooked by professional DJ, vinyl digger and Tramp Records label owner, Tobias Kirmayer, and latin/jazz producer, Jerker Kluge. The musical spectrum is quite large, from Hip Hop (Mighty Mocambos ft. Afrika Bambaataa) to Afrofunk (Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra, Fanga), Heavy Funk (The Qualitons, Tommy Dark) to Nu Soul (Radio Etiopia feaT. Bajka), Latin Jazz (Pucho & his Latin Soul Brothers, Cesar's Salad, Willis Jackson) to Hip Hop/Jazz hybrids (Jacknife Lee, Samp Brothers), Soul (CJ. Leach) to Dancefloor Jazz (Deep Jazz)… The two German selectors are music pros with GREAT taste, there's no filler to be found here - only 74mn of pure communicative grooviness!! So, is this compilation recommended? Heavily.

March 2013 was an exceptional month, with MANY independant labels and artists keeping on hitting us with download links and promotional records. Here's our selection of the best vinyl and CDs we received, a large one for a change (25 releases reviewed!), including of course the fantastic four Paris DJs releases of each of the four previous week, you know the deal by now! We also received an astonishing amount fo submissions for our next compilation 'We Are The Fire Inside Your Mind' which will come back to later on. Bands still have until april 15th to submit tracks so they shouldn't hesitate cos' we might cook more than one volume at once this time…

At Paris DJs' studios, we've been preparing the second Afro/Tropical compilation for nearly a month already (bands still have until april 15th to submit their tracks), and we received an amazing amount of music, from artists and labels from all over the world, including a few releases already out on vinyl or CD. Among those, the new EP/album from Arat Kilo got our attention. We were not that impressed by their previous releases but with this one the French ethio-jazz band is reaching new heights and we won't miss checking them on stage next time they play in Paris… Bim Bam Orchestra also raised a few of our eyesbrows. Another French afrobeat band to follow? 100%!! We had the chance to see them at Le Studio de l'Ermitage last weekend and can't recommend enough their heavy shit. Their 2010 EP 'Nuits Minuscules' is a good surprise which will leave us eagerly awaiting their next recording. On the reissue front the Dieuf-Dieul de Thiès have some unreleased mesmerizing afro grooves from 30 years ago coming out on record store's day (april 20th) through Teranga Beat - a label to follow closely in 2013… just like our friends from Canada Kept Records, with their limited 7 inches - all killer, no filler! First there's a new Polyrhythmics intergalactic afro-funk single, groovy as outer space hell, which we won't miss to licence for our 'We Are The Fire Inside Your Mind' compilation, and then there's the new Hard Proof afrobeat single, 'Dragon', guaranteed pure burning fire produced by Adrian Quesada (of Brownout/Grupo Fantasma/Echocentrics/Ocote Soul Sound fame). So now the deal's like this: you see a new 45 released by Kept Records, you get it and think later!! Another favorite from afro/latin selection this month is quite a treat in the form of the first LP from Orquesta El Macabeo, gathering tracks from their two self-released album with an exclusive new recording. Here's your chance to discover some fantastic and impressive salsa from Puerto-Rico, irresistible on global dancefloors!

We never heard any chanson française backed by soulful raw funk before, and the Caroline Lacaze album is a pleasant surprise. She's backed by german funksters from the Mocambo Electric Sound Orchestra and maybe, just maybe, it could be a great idea to release the superb instrumentals… Jazz&Milk has been one of our favorite German labels for quite a while and the new album from its founder Dusty is another gem in their catalog, an eargasm of beats and rhythms, from latin-jazz ("Mood Matters", "It's Time", "Steel Keepin' It Raw", "Lost In Andalusia") to afrobeat ("Seventy Three", "Under The Same Drum" "Mozafrique"), with trippy nu-jazz ("Danse Macabre feat. Bad Jazz Troupe", "Southern Spirits", "Reascend feat. Sam Irl") and bits of soul. Add to the high quality of the music some superb packaging, as always, and you got one of the most collectable labels of these days! If you don't want to take risks, go directly for the new Luv'n'Haight reissue, you'll never be disappointed. The latest offering from the label collect deep soul & blues from the 70s recorded by Geater Davis for the House Of Orange label. High quality stuff, as usual with this Californian label! Also on the label tip, Jazzman Records are killing it with their reissues, of course, but especially with their new releases! After a masterful new album from The Greg Foat Group, here's the new space-jazz project from Miles Newbold. One year ago we had the privilege to release a mix by his other project The Natural Yogurt Band in which he included exclusive tracks from his new one, The Sign Of Four. Now he’s back with a wild, weird and full Sign of Four album called 'Hammer, Anvil & Stirrup'. This is the spaced-out psychedelic album of the month, hands down, playing on repeat at Paris DJs HQ.

French producer Dandy Teru released his first album on Ubiquity Records who, after the Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra album and the Grant Phabao remixes of The Echocentrics, has definitively an ear for finding the best from France. Soft, sexy & mellow, this liquid album of downtempo hip hop beats & tunes is gonna be hard to tire of. On the vinyl front, we received some nice 45 goodies from the Cold Busted label from Colorado, starting with Polish DJ and producer based in Manchester Grzegorz Ochman a.k.a. My Neighbour Is, who's innovative hip hop/funk beats and samples recalls the grooviest of The Herbaliser. Some old school wax vibes for the b-boys announcing a great album for 2013. There's also Poldoore from Belgium, sampling Mobb Deep's 'Shook Ones Part II', the man delivers a blast of downtempo heavy beats with his 'Shrooms' 45. B-side's on an instrumental hip hop/jazz vibe that's quite refreshing too. French label Underdog Records keeps on digging the Danish scene and brings this month two new albums from the North: blue-eyed soul singer Nanna B's debut album 'Vitaphone' is filled with tight beats, super production, and smooth soulful vocals, while Sweatshop's first opus 'Can We Get Hooked Up' gathers some old school funky hip hop, classic boom-bap and cool reggae grooves. We'll conclude this hip hop selection with the new single from rapper Ty out on Tru Thoughts Recordings, the Brighton label which never stops releasing killer records. This new single is another classic from one of the finest UK lyricists and we can't wait for the album, once again.

Haitian/French singer and percussionist Carlon Rara has a second album of soulful blues/reggae/folk/jazz out, something rather soft & calm, full of sunshine & positive vibes. One for the spring mornings to come… Then of course there's the monthly dose of Grant Phabao reggae productions, with the storming and entrancing soulful ska burner, super hot, sexy and smoking new single from The Breakestra's singer Afrodyete, an uplifting piece of Rocksteady Soul from Jamaican vetaran singer Carlton Livingston, a surprising reggae rework of Finnish psychedelic duo Pepe Deluxé and a new landmark in authentic Jamaican releases from the 21st century with The Jays first-ever full-length album 'Stepping Up In Time'. From his Paris-based studio, this man is just ruling over Jamaica, and this is just the beginning of the year…

Some "must-listen" compilations hit our shores this month, and we're really grateful of labels who keep on sending us astonishing collections of music, starting with Tobias Kirmayer from Tramp Records who'll put out mid-april the fifth volume of his legendary 'Movements' series, gathering the coolest of rare soul, self-released funk and obscure grooves. Full review will come next week on Paris DJs. Vampisoul Records in Spain also add a new volume to a series we've been following closely, 'Hipshakers', digging into the King/Federal vaults to find underexposed R&B songs. This third collection comes again with some irresistible pearls that'll go directly into the DJ bag for the hip retro dancing parties. Italian label Record Kicks is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with lots of free downloads… and a compilation assembling a slew of Soul, Funk, Afro, Reggae & Latin-Jazz hits, with a few unreleased goodies as the icing on the cake from Third Coast Kings, The Baker Brothers, The Liberators or Nick Pride & The Pimptones… Happy, explosive, raw & deep anniversary, Record Kicks! Wishing you 10 more years of great records!! We'll end this selection by a last focus on the Cold Busted label from Colorado owned and operated by DJ Vitamin D, who nicely sent us a selection of vinyl with catchy art covers, including their latest limited edition LP compilation, 'This Is How It Should Be Done Vol.1', released summer 2012, full of dope funk breakbeats and downtempo beats. Those cats are bringing back memories of the glory days of the Fat City Recordings compilations of the late 90s/early 2000s in Manchester and that's saying a lot!!

February 2013 was a short month, as every year, but that didn't stop independant labels and artists to overwhelm us with download links and promotional records. As usual, we've focused on the vinyl, the glorious vinyl that some inflexible producers keep on putting out, from the Mocambo Records camp who hit us with delicous raw funk, from Mr Bongo Records who's just reissued two Ebo Taylor gems from the past, and from UK soundtrack pop band The Kramford Look, who's latest 10 inch (and CD) has been gracing most of our mornings this last month. We've also selected some nice funk, soul, hip hop, dancehall, electronic and jazz CDs, and of course the fantastic four Paris DJs releases of each of the four previous week! Killer grooves from Grant Phabao in many different colours of Jamaican vibes...

Young French singer Caroline Lacaze - who debuted on the Mighty Mocambos’ album 'The Future is Here' has a fantastic raw soul/heavy funk 7 inch out, and an album, 'En Route' that's gonna follow soon. Expect French retro soul that's crunchy, deep, funky and growingly addictive! On the same vibe, Lena & The Deep Soul from Montpellier (south of France) are releasing a self-produced and very soulful effort called 'Burn', from which the track 'Mr Julian' is on heavy rotation in our sets. The future of French Funk is happening now… We've been harassing our listeners and readers for so many years about The Poets of Rhythm in Germany, and the Daptone and Truth & Soul gangs in the US, and that Deep Funk movement is still making waves all over Europe. From Sweden comes Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators, back with a second album gathering material written over the course of some 4 years, and leaning towards some progressive soul from the late 60s era for our greatest pleasure. Following up on the Fumaça Preta feature from last month, a band featuring members of UK raw funk group The Grits, we wanted to give a shout to their 2012 seven inch 'Strychine', an edgy soul cover of garage rock combo The Sonics, backed by a psychedelic funk song that's heavily groovy. Some hard-to-resist raw funk announcing some great things for The Grits in 2013...

Back with a second album after the classic 'The Day Before' from 2007, Californian producer DJ Day has now found his true home, joining the Piecelock 70 artists collective founded by Thes One of People Under The Stairs, the kings of summertime hip hop. This 'Land Of 1000 Chances' album is another perfect soundtrack to a lazy afternoon in the grass. A beatmaker's masterpiece, perfectly chilled for repetitive listening. On the Jamaican music front we won't complain about getting regular new releases from French prolific producer Grant Phabao, who delivers week after week some instantly classic reggae tunes. This month's seen a free release with Horace Andy's 'Talk About Peace', an outstanding conscious tune that has been kept hidden in Paris DJs' vaults for too long until now, and 'African Man', a 3rd single with The Jays before the launch of their long-awaited album, featuring a psychedelic latin funk remix by Adrian Quesada and a swinging jazz remix by Grant Phabao himself! UK vintage dancehall duo consisting of DJ/producer Wrongtom and jungle MC Deemas J is also back with a second single extraced from the 'In East London' album. the deep & reverb-heavy 'Superteng', which comes with a trippy headnoding hip hop remix by Mo' Matic, an extended version of the original mix definitively better than the edited cut for all dub lovers, and a crazy drum'n'bass remix of previous single 'Jump + Move + Rock' by Benny Page, among others...

The recent (and upcoming) Ebo Taylor tour dates have seen the appearance in his backing band of Paris Djs collaborators Franck Biyong on guitar and Muyiwa Kunnunji from Egypt 80 on trumpet. Both are featured in the 'Dis Is Good For You' compilation from the Paris DJs Soundsystem so we were quite proud to go and check them at one of their February shows near Paris, which also featured Tony Allen guesting on drums for one song! Two albums from the Ghanaian guitarist/producer have just been reissued by UK label Mr Bongo: the self-titled 'Ebo Taylor' from 1977, a marvelous piece of Ghanaian soul featuring the highlife-meets-funk classic 'Heaven'; and 'Conflict' from 1980, a gem of Ghanaian afro-funk featuring another highlife-meets-funk classic, 'Love And Death'. For some more current tropical vibes, the Afrobeat-meets-ska remix of afro-latin-funk band from L.A. Jungle Fire will definitively ignite many dancefloors, while the chilled-reggae-funk remix of Australian funk orchestra The Cactus Channel will get minds on an on the beach setting right away. Both were produced by the relentless Grant Phabao and released by Paris DJs...

Boddhi Satva's debut album 'Invocation' was one of the highlights of 2012. One year later BBE Music are still extracting singles from this masterful African Deep House record. The latest one, 'Ngnari Konon featuring Oumou Sangaré' is one to keep in the DJ bag, just like we advised in our 5th volume of the Bag of Goodies mixes series. With two handfuls of remixes by Boddhi Satva, Louie Vega, Manoo and Josh Milan, there's a version for every kind of occasion, our preferences going towards the remixes Boddhi Satva did himself. Andrea Benini aka Mop Mop has a new album out, 'Isle Of Magic', featuring Trinidadian poet Anthony Joseph and legendary trombonist player Fred Wesley. Rooted in jazz, this new album explores some entrancing voodoo territories with Carribean flavors and funk/soul fumes. Finally giving some meaning to the tag nu jazz, this album is a grower for sure. Another album that's been infiltrating our minds those last months is the new project lead by French producer Professor Oz, an electro-roots album with a definitive French flavor, updating the sound of Montmartre of swinging gypsy jazz guitar, accordion waltzes, deep, groovy electro beats and trombone tones, with Kusturican Balkanese bits thrown in for good measure. Que Pasa is the ultimate sound of Paris, for sure, the kind that'll appeal to compilers and music supervisors! The Kramford Look is a band from the UK Shawn Lee recommended to us. They released last year a marvelous album or baroque pop melted with 70s library jazz-funk and psychedelic easy-listening, '1970', and are back with a limited edition 10 inch vinyl (250 hand-numbered copies), 'Bip Bip Bip…', which picks up where the debut album left off. Think of a pastoral/thriller soundtrack version of The Real Tuesday Weld, imagine some Lalo Schifrin-inspired pop, and you might get an idea of what this superb cinematic jazz stuff sounds like!

With big outlet FNAC usual wrongdoings, which we warned about 7 years ago now, and Virgin Megastores closing, with some crookery from the distributors hiding their losses and rushing headlong into the wall, record labels are dying in France. Well not many have ever existed over here, but now they're disappearing at an accelerated speed. Warp Records was among the first ones. Numero Group, Daptone, Rhymesayers, Finders Keepers, G-Stone, Light In The Attic or Sofrito for example have completely fallen off the radar. "Where are they now?" would be the name of the TV show! Now-Again, Truth & Soul, Freestyle, Jazzman, Record Kicks, Strut or Vampisoul, just like many others, have stopped sending records. Ubiquity, Soundway, Stones Throw or Royal Potato Family are still there, irregularly… and for how long? Thankfully there's still some resistance from REAL INDEPENDANTS, in there for the love of music and beautifully crafted objects for the real world. This first playlist of the year does a focus on these cats. Kept Records, Family Groove Records, Cast-A-Blast, Six Degrees, Music With Soul, Tru Thoughts, Tramp Records, of course our own Paris DJs little label growing fast… and a few of our friends such as Souleance, Les Frères Smith or Shawn Lee. There's a new style of raw and mesmerizing funk coming from the Middle East, called "spychedelic". And it happens on our of our favorite labels from Canada, Kept Records! You gotta check Turkish funkster Alpam's limited edition 7 inch asap… Or you could go and dig for some lost 1984 modern soul from the Slave offshoot Aurra, which Steve Washington reformed after departing from Salsoul, with Sheila Brody aka Sheila Washington & Mark Stevens. The record, supposed to be released on Quincy Jones' Qwest Records label, was shelved, & tapes only recently recovered. A unique blend of Funk, Boogie, Electro & R&B on this little 7 inch announcing the album later on this year. The Bobby Valentine album has been released for a full year already, but we just stumbled upon it while announcing the new Shawn Lee single, on his own bandcamp page. It's a complete self-released album of covers sold as a "reissue of the rare 1973 private press album by the obscure Easy listening/Soul crooner Bobby Valentine"… which is just a new disguise for one of the most prolific producer on this side of the funk, after Clutchy Hopkins, Eugène Harrington and many others. Expect psychedelic & orchestral 70s white soul and future retro golden oldies magic! On the reissues side, we can't advise enough the Tramp Records series, 'The Story Of', with this month an anthology from Jimmy "Preacher" Ellis, from blues, R&B and proto-funk to psychedelic funk and seventies soul, with most of the tracks re-appearing for the first time.

Greek reggae/dancehall activist Blend Mishkin will have a new single out this month, 'We Are Roots' featuring MC Jamalski. The track will be out on Cast-a-Blast as a limited free download from February 18th till March 30th to support and give strength during the man's travels for the "Rewind Guaranteed Europe Tour" starting very soon. Killer dancefloor biz with Jamaican flavors, as always. Heavy heavy heavy! Our own Grant Phabao isn't resting either, with a new single from The Jays and a new album from the legendary Silvertones, following the ones he's put out from The Lone Ranger and Carlton Livingston before. Phabao is THE man whom Jamaican veterans go to today, when they're looking for the real thing they used to find at Lee Perry's or at Coxsone's! We've also received the fan club 45 from The Lions on Stones Throw Records, announcing the boxset 45 of the upcoming roots reggae/soul second album from the Los Angeles gang… But more about that, track-by-track, very soon!

Our first African record playlisted this year comes from Egypt through France. Egyptian Project is an blend of Egyptian melodies, voice and rhythms with European electronic beats and textures, and the album 'Ya Amar', recorded over three years, is a splendid electro-acoustic / Oriental-fusion piece. Ambitious and deep. We then go to The Netherlands and the young Music With Soul label who releases some strictly limited 45s and gently sent us two singles from Fumaça Preta, a band gathering Brazilian legend Joel Stones, who runs the Tropicalia in Furs label in New York, Stuart Carter and James Porch from raw funk UK band The Grits and Portuguese-Venezuelan producer/drummer Alex Figuera. Their music is an insane mixture of psycho garage funk with Brazilian 70s psychedelics, raw and in-your face, with their own nasty sound! Those two 45s are crazy-ass sick and limited to a handful of hundred copies each so don't hesitate any second more if you're into the mind-blowing biz!! Also in our playlist this month, a 11mn live cover of Fela Kuti's 'Opposite People' as played by Les Frères Smith last summer at the amazing Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Those guys are currently preparing their second album, to be recorded and mixed by Grant Phabao this spring for a summer release…

Uncanny Scottish four-piece band Hidden Orchestra will be releasing a new single with an exclusive b-side on February 25th, extracted from their second album 'Archipelago', one of those records that doesn't leave the area around the turntable for months after its release. 'Fourth Wall' is a new tour-de-force in cinematic beats, with James Bond images coming to mind. Those guys should be doing a movie soundtrack VERY soon! Also out soon on Brighton's Tru Thoughts Recordings, the new Natural Self single is no less majestic and sounds like a perfect mix of TM Juke's electronic soul and The Beta Band mushroomness. 21st century production at its most inventive and soulful. A new artist joining the ever-expanding rooster of the Paris DJs collective, Shawn Lee doesn't really need an introduction anymore with something like 50 albums released in an amazing career that started in the mid-90s! His new single 'The Word Jam' evoques the Cosmic Library Funk spirit of Nino Nardini and J.J. Perrey so don't hold back and grab this digital release to support your favorite music website! In 2012 R'n'B and Bass music were the big hype… but most of the albums in those genres we've heard had all something in common: they were BORING. So much boring. Even the Frank Ocean one which nealry everyone supported was something hard to swallow as a whole. No fun, no music really… what was the point? Thankfully a few innovators in both scenes have managed to rise from the cloudy airwaves, Zulu Guru for example in R&B, and the crazy French duo of Souleance in the modern beats section infested with MPC blandness, notably. The latter have a new digital album and 7 inch out this week, 'La Beat Tape', and it's pure dancefloor fire in a wild variety of styles. Freshness like this is what we're after!

First things first, let's start with what's happening on the Jamaican music front. While in Paris, legendary deejay The Lone Ranger keeps on re-inventing his rub-a-dub art every year, and with his partner in crime Grant Phabao on production once again, his latest single might leave you speechless. New York, or more precisely Brooklyn is not to be forgotten, especially the cult Don't Trip Studios from Victor Axelrod a.k.a. Ticklah who never stops producing marvelous roots reggae & dub vibes. His latest recording for The Frightnrs is another must-have of rocksteady coolness. From the same neighborhood you may also find Super Hi-Fi, Brooklyn's premiere two-trombone dub experience, who's LP "Dub To The Bone" released on Electric Cowbell Records might be the best reggae album we've heard this year. We also had a nice surprise coming from London, The Skints, a really fresh second album from the ska quartet, produced by Prince Fatty.

Let's now check what's been rambling on the Afro front. French jazz saxophonist Barney Willen has got some unreleased tapes of psychedelic desert blues and spiritual afrojazz coming out on Sonorama, from his travels through Morocco, Algeria, Niger, Mali, Upper Volta and Senegal to Dakar with a group of musicians and filmmakers in 1969-70. Those who've been entranced by his 'Moshi' album released in 1972 will find a way to get this limited double vinyl treasure. Now back to today and African music happening all over the world, starting with Franck Biyong and Grant Phabao blending afrobeat with ethio jazz and blaxploitation funk with the help of Les Frères Smith on the 'C.F.A. Music' single released on Paris DJs. Definitively one of the afrobeat tracks of the year! We can then travel all the way to Brooklyn and Electric Cowbell Records once again, who've put out a mesmerizing 1970's psychedelic afrorock freakout album from Karthala 72, with its bonus remix album to fill up the plate. And then way back to spain where most of the Spanish afrobeat scene has gathered on a Fela tribute compilation, 'La Música Es El Arma Del Futuro', featuring two of the bands we've been following for some time, Pyramid Blue and the Alma Afrobeat Ensemble… Africa is the music of the future and the future is now and everywhere!

Paris DJs is not only about reggae and afro, and we've heard some very interesting organic soul, jazz or pop music too this month. Alice Russell released a gem of an album with Quantic this year (from which a new single, 'Magadalena' is just out - tip: check out the marvelous acoustic version!), she'll be back with another one in february next year, produced this time with ™ Juke, which gathers at least 5 unmissable singles. Doubtlessly one of the greatest soul singers of our times. Also to be released on Tru Thoughts Recordings, the new Mark de Clive-Lowe album sees the pianist' joining forces with a jazz big band. A neo-classic for all the jazz heads out there that's gonna dust off your speakers! On a lighter note we received a cool holiday present from The Real Tuesday Weld in the form of a CD of bonus tracks and remixes from his recent 'The Last Werewolf' album. The new Puppini Sisters collaboration alone makes it worth hunting for alone. Another one that's going to make big waves on the 21st century swing scene. The rest of the EP is pure Tuesday Weld, antique beats meet pop classicism, addictive as ever. Finally, we wanted to point out that a new Tommy Guerrero album's been released in Japan, and we managed to get our ears on it. The man seems to be keeping on raising the trippy Mo' Wax flag all by himself these days. He might even be Clutchy Hopkins!!

Coming out january 7th on Jack To Phono Records, the new Flevans single is another step forward into wobbling post breakbeat club beats. Brighton's finest' electronica with strong hooks that makes us eagerly awaiting the album that's gonna follow. From Madison, USA comes Fringe Character and his second EP of downtempo grooves, expanding his sound with the addition of rappers, and guest horns from members of The Budos Band/Antibalas. A cool neo-chillout soundtrack that lets us hope for the best for the young man's future. On a more urban tip, the new Jesse Boykins III & MeLo-X (aka Zulu Guru) single 'I'm New Here' is another killer 21st century soul piece, deep and uniquely moving. The Jacques Greene remix of 'The Perfect Blues' that's coming next is also quite a treat, in its silky deep house dressing, pure chilled sensuality and grandiose melancholy… And we'll conclude this monthly palylist with the christmas album of the year, concocted by Dr Rubberfunk and Hint under the name Olympic Cyclone Band, a really funky one that's gonna be featured in xmas mixes and compilations for many years.

We've reached a point where we're starting to receive each month more links to free downloads (44%) than links to promotional digital downloads (43%). The physical records, vinyl or CD, are far behind, with only 13% of what arrives at the studios. As music pros, you'll understand we keep our focus on artists and labels who are producing and releasing products you can touch and feel. As DJs, we're also more inclined to playing records, definitively not boring as reading a playlist of digital files…

The November 2012 Paris DJs Playlist :

This november we had the luxury of going to see many of our friends onstage around and in Paris. Ebo Taylor & Afrobeat Academy smashed the place at Le Hangar in Ivry. The Antibalas show at Le New Morning was also killer, especially the second set with 3 new amazing tracks... and we got signed records from Ticklah (his fantastic Bob & Gene reggae/dub rework on a Daptone 7 inch), from Antibalas (the new LP on Daptone, a real Fela-inspired grower) and from Superhuman Happiness (a CD EP released on The Royal Potato Family late 2011, collecting the band's infectious singles). Stuart Bogie, Luke O’Malley, Ryan Ferreira, Jared Samuel, Eric Biondo, Nikhil Yerawadekar and Miles Arntzen, who make up Superhuman Happiness, have collaborated with several other bands including Antibalas, Phenomenal Handclap Band, TV On The Radio, Iron & Wine and Martha Wainwright among many others. They'll be releasing their full-length album, 'Hands', in March 2013 via The Royal Potato Family….

November 2012 was also a good month for the Paris DJs label, with 3 new singles released, all produced by Grant Phabao, and featuring 3 legends of reggae: Carlton Livingston, getting the heavy funk/blues rocking treatment from new band on the scene The Silverstrokes; Echo Minott, putting the 'ragga' and the 'muffin' back into 'Raggamuffin' with a new smashing one drop monster tune; and The Lone Ranger, the most entertaining DeeJay who ever lived, remixed by DJ/producer Blend Mishkin for some Braaaap Braaaap wicked dancehall. We also put out a free download from Sandra N'Kaké & Jî Drû, who paid their dues to a free soul with their tribute to the late Terry Callier.

The first 12 inch on the brand new Muka Edits label is pure tropical dancefloor gold, while the third 7 inch in the 'Afro Funk Gems' series of explosive & officially licenced edits explores Columbian steamy funk and French African afrofunk. We also received an 18 track compilation by Chris Gill from Northside Records and Lance Ferguson from The Bamboos, 'The Soul of Melbourne', featuring the best of what Melbourne has to offer the world, whether it’s Deep Funk, Neo Soul, Afrobeat, R&B, Bollywood, Spiritual Jazz or Northern Soul. The comp includes the best tracks from some friends of ours (The Cactus Channel, The Bombay Royale, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Cookin' On 3 Burners…) and also some nice discoveries. We've been playing some Australian grooves for years, it's high time everyone catches on, and this is a perfect entry point!

Brighton-based label Tru Thoughts Recordings get a regular spot on our playlist because of the quality of their releases and the new 'Shapes 12:01' low-priced double compilation is, as every year, a must have if you're open-minded towards breaks, electronic soul, dubstep, crossover and global grooves - 29 tracks from new signings (Mark de Clive-Lowe, Anchorsong), established past or present Tru Thoughts artists (Beta Hector, Benji Boko, Hint, Kinny, Saravah Soul, Maddslinky, Hidden Orchestra…) with a few new songs thrown in there too.

New-Zealanders The Black Seeds have reached a high point with their fusion of dub, funk, afrobeat and soul with their latest album 'Dust & Dirt', and they're re-releasing it with a slew of bonus tracks, dubs, and remixes. We were lucky to get a promo copy of their third single which features 4 of those bonus tracks. On a more electronic tip, we received some cool music from the Ninja Tune/Big Dada people. First of all there's Tony Campbell aka Dobie, who's put out a second EP for Big Dada (announcing his 2013 album 'We Will Not Harm You'). The EP is all instrumental music, with every track leaping off to a different style, sometimes raw and agressive, always sensible and futuristic. Then we have two new singles from Amon Tobin's Two Fingers project, also on Big Dada, all about beats and bass, re-inventing the 'industrial' genre for the for the 21st century, no less! Our last selection for this month is a kind of anachronism: the 'Hardcourage' album from New-Yorker FaltyDL is an early-90's-inspired blend of house, electronica and soul that could have very well figured in our recent '21st Century Blues' selection!

Woah October was heavy on the release side! As a label Paris DJs delivered new singles from Carlton Livingston and Pompidoo, a new album from Franck Biyong and the first compilation of Afro/Tropical grooves gathered by the Paris DJs Soundsystem… while as a media we received no less than 150 albums on all formats! September was like a standard month for us, 50 new releases landed in our hard drives, while nearly as many real life records reached our shores. Out of those we selected 5 new albums worth checking, Criolo's Nó Na Orelha, a superb eclectic set from the 35-year-old São Paolo rapper blending hip hop, brazilian grooves and even afrobeat; Fink's live album and book Wheels Turn Beneath My Feet, a really beautiful packaging with moving, passionate and spiritual pop/folk songs; Lukid's fourth album Lonely At The Top, tone poems, sonic explorations and more challenges against the conventions of electronic music; Prince Fatty's new record Prince Fatty Versus the Drunken Gambler, one the ten best roots reggae producers out there today and maybe his most accomplished set yet; and finally Zulu Guru (aka Jesse Boykins III & MeLo-X)'s self-titled album, an afro-futuristic, mind-blowing collection of 21st century blues. We also opted for two reissues from the Sonorama label, who's been digging some mid-70s disco-funk from Germany by Intercity Sound Association and Joy Unlimited, drawing some heavy smile on our ears. On the vinyl side, we got some amazing unclassifiable cumbia dub from Bondi Blaster, some addictive Peplum funk and dub from Il Carbonaro (a band with some Budos Band connections), the killer afrofunk 45 from Jungle Fire which we played over and over in our sets and mixes (and which includes a cover of Fela Anikulapu Kuti's Let's Start), tight and funky soul jazz from On The Spot Trio, and, last but not least, a collaborative 45 that Paris DJs did with Electric Cowbell records from Brooklyn, sharing each side each for an unmissable afro-rock 7 inch that everyone's gonna run after a few months from now!

Logically, August is the summer month when not much happens releases-wise. Well we still received a few handfuls of 45s, LPs and CDs, and a few dozens digital downloads. So respect is due this month to all the cool labels out there, starting with Nascente in the UK who does an amazing job on the reissue/compilation tip. They sent us the 4 companion double CDs to Lloyd Bradley's fantastic book about Jamaican music, Bass Culture: When Reggae Was King. Amazing ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub and dancehall from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s, of course, but also original artworks, detailed sleeve notes adapted from the book… A really impressive set! We also need to thank Electric Cowbell Records in Brooklyn, who sent us dancefloor-burning 7 inches, The Royal Potato Family also from Brooklyn, who hit us with Marco Benevento's new album for which we'll do a special focus mix very soon, Tramp Records in Germany with their essential compilations and reissues (and new Qualitons stuff is coming too!), and HopeStreet Recordings in Melbourne, who granted us with crucial Funk gatefold LP releases. Our long-time friends from Canada The Souljazz Orchestra also hit us with their brand new CD and its 100% killer - there are so many hit singles in this album that's it's ridiculously fantastic. And finally a big thanks goes to the balkanese/gypsy/afro brass band from Belgium Va Fan Fahre who put on 5 free shows in Paris' parcs this summer and hit us with a signed copy of their latest vinyl!!

July 2012 was cooler than the previous month on the releases side, with 25 new physical records reaching our shores (and more than 30 new digital albums). Our march selection was not an easy one to make and we had to leave a few records on the side such as the new albums from Slugabed or 2nd Class Citizen (watermarked CDs, how come labels have money to spend on crazy stuff like that is a mystery), or from Belleruche on Tru Thoughts and Blockhead on Ninja Tune (labels we strongly advise to check our Community Management services)… Of course the priority goes to our friends and collaborators, such as Ebo Taylor (our own Grant Phabao co-produced 2 tracks on this new album), Souleance, The Poets of Rhythm, The Cheebacabra or Quantic.
