Disc 1 of Agemo, focusing on the emotional impact of change through technology, is a 3D60 mix of the Animation’s previous release, Asiento (RNR017), which saw Bob Belden’s seminal Jazz+drum’n bass band interpret Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew. This exclusive and innovative mixing process (already witnessed on The Orb + David Gilmour’s Metallic Spheres), devised and honed by Mike Brady, Ian Thompson and Youth (3d60.co.uk), focuses on both increasing the dynamic range (20db!) of the music and providing a 3-dimensional HEADPHONE listening experience, the likes of which most users will never have had experience before. Disc 2 of Agemo, focusing on the emotional impact of change through creativity is a Remix of the original Asiento. The original six tracks, "Pharaoh’s Dance", "Bitches Brew", "John McLaughlin", "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down", "Spanish Key" and "Sanctuary" are taken on by absolute masters of their craft, in order Bill Laswell, DJ Logic and Grant Phabao, Youth (producer of The Verve and Paul McCartney), Gaudi, Fanu and Joaquim "Joe" Claussell, as they reconstruct and reinterpret the original material to extract the essence of what Bitches Brew means to them - spacing from Dub to Funk to Breakbeats to Dancefloor and r’n’b. November 28th 2011 saw the release of the second recording on RareNoiseRecords by Animation, Bob Belden‘s futurebound jazz-drum’n bass-electronica vehicle - Agemo. The term "Agemo" refers to a deity within the pantheon of gods of the West African spiritual practice Santeria (Vodun) which embodies the characteristic of "Change" and "Transformation" and is often represented as a Chamaleon. Agemo is therefore a Hymn To Transformation, as seen through the lenses of technology and creativity. (For the more mathematically perverse among you "Agemo" also refers to a subgroup of the class of p-groups - all puns intended). Asiento was an interpretation of Miles Davis’ seminal work, Bitches Brew. Agemo takes Asiento and "folds" it onto itself . A Dream within a Dream.

In a bid to keep abreast of cutting edge technology, RareNoiseRecords has embraced the brave new world of the 3D60™ sound experience. The label's first release to utilize the revolutionary system, which creates a surround-sound mix with the added dimension of the top in the listener's headphones, is the two-album set Agemo by Bob Belden's group Animation. Essentially a radical recasting of the six tracks from Animation's 2010 RareNoise debut, Asiento (a document of a 2006 Animation performance at New York's Merkin Hall), Agemo offers listeners a whole new perspective on the band's interpretation of Miles Davis' 1970 fusion landmark, Bitches Brew. This startling new take on Asiento brings listeners on stage, as it were, with the sounds of saxophonist Belden, trumpeter Tim Hagans, keyboardist Scott Kinsey, bassist Matt Garrison, turntablist DJ Logic and drummer Guy Licata swirling around them on renditions of "Pharoah's Dance," "Spanish Key," "John McLaughlin," "Sanctuary," "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" and the title track of Miles' seminal work.
 
 The title Agemo comes from a deity in the pantheon of Santeria - embodying the essence of change and therefore, represented as a Chameleon. Fittingly, the second album of Agemo showcases the creative re-imaginings of renowned remix artists Fanu, Youth, Gaudi, Joe Claussell, DJ Logic and Bill Laswell as they reconstruct and reinterpret the original material from Animation's Asiento (itself an interpretation of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew), to extract the essence of what Bitches Brew means to them - from dub to funk to breakbeats to dancefloor and R&B. Says Belden of the two new RareNoise releases, "They're both basically remixes but they're two different aesthetics. One is remixing the presentation, the other is remixing the form."
 
 The exclusive and innovative 3D60™ mixing process utilized on Agemo was developed jointly by The Jam's sound engineer and live concert mixer Mike Brady, musician and multimedia producer Ian Thompson and internationally renowned music producer and remix artist Youth. It focuses on both increasing the dynamic range of the music and providing a fully immersive, three-dimensional 360-degree headphone listening experience. With sounds coming from all around the listener -- in front, behind, at different heights and even from overhead or below - the 3D60™ system is truly a brand new frontier in music listening. And it is fully compatible with all audio playback formats. All you need is any pair of stereo headphones. (The process was previously utilized on 2010's Metallic Spheres, a collaboration between ambient house pioneers The Orb and Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour).
 
 Says Belden of the 3D60™ system: "Portable devices, whether they are iPods, iPads, cellphones, MP3 players or laptop computers, are the most used devices for listening to music. So this is a way to create an aural experience that used to require an extensive home theater system and speakers. This replaces five speakers in your head. It's a very unique, experimental concept. It's basically mixing a live concert in a kind of holographic environment. So what you get is a wider experience aurally. It's taking the listening experience to another level."
 
 "It was an honor for us to collaborate with such a great lineup reworking some of the 20th century's finest music," says Brady. "Asiento gave us excellent material to work with, and we think we've done it justice by bringing out the depth and energy to the live recording." And audiophiles take note: the first disc of Agemo will also be released as 24bit/96Khz FLAC.
 
 Brady provides some background on his interest in surround sound and his development of the revolutionary 3D60™ system: "My earliest surround experience was seeing Pink Floyd in concert," Brady recalls. "They were experimenting at an Essex University gig with one of the first Quad PA systems, which was really used for key effects; it didn't create a full listening ambience, just gave the chance to pan single sounds dramatically round the gig space. But that had impact at the time and was a window on future ideas for presenting sound. So after finding myself in studios and working in TV sound, and then mixing music and engineering sound in large stadiums and halls -- with all the problems of unwanted echo ambience those gigs can present -- I moved away into directing music promos for some time, which bridged my music and TV backgrounds. But I've kept in touch with sound and playing music, and I returned to that world directly again with the 3D60™ concept and process coming into being just over a year ago, when I founded the company with media lecturer and musician Ian Thompson (from the Mike Flowers Pops band) and renowned international music producer Youth."
 
 Brady adds that his 3D60™ system was meant to appeal specifically to the iPod generation. "We wanted to develop a fully immersive sound experience specifically designed for headphones, prompted by the big uptake in headphone use, whether it's people hearing music on iPods, on their computers or on their mobile phones. We knew about 5.1 sound but it seemed a bit physically cumbersome and limited, and it was never a big hit with music fans. It's a 'virtual' surround system based on front and rear sound source positions only, it needs encoding, and you need to buy extra speakers and amps just to get a kind of imprecise 'surround' sound effect. And that's fixed into your home room and limited to a band of 'horizontal only' sound - it's just not the 'listen anywhere' fully immersive experience that we wanted and that 3D60™ system is. We create surround ambiences at source, in truly three dimensions, that go well beyond stereo and 5.1. So 3D60 sounds can be placed absolutely anywhere around you -- in front of you, coming from behind, above, from right over your head - and they can move around through all these dimensions. We aim to provide a fuller and more exciting sound by putting the listener at the centre of the music with our 360-degree immersive listening experience. Hence the name."
 
 Belden, who is understandably excited about this new technology in sound, also credits RareNoiseRecords' forward-thinking founders with providing the impetus for the U.K.-based label to push the envelope in the marketplace. "This 3D60™ system is totally unique. Nobody does this. For one thing, there's nothing like RareNoiseRecords in the business. They are interested in experimenting with sound and bringing the 'wow' back to the music so that we can compete with other forms of entertainment. So what we're really trying to do is to make records that are presented uniquely."

Veteran rub-a-dub singer, Carlton Livingston started his career in Jamaica in the 1970s in sound systems with legendary deejay The Lone Ranger. He started recording for Channel One Records in 1978 and soon went to Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label, releasing hits such as "Why", "Here I Stand" and "Predictions". His first album, "Soweto", was produced by Lone Ranger's friends Leon Symoie and Chester Symoie and their Thrillseekers label in 1979. The early 80s were a productive period for him, with big singles like "Mr DJ", "Cuss Rasta" (for U Brown's label), "Trodding", "Tricks" (for Sly and Robbie's Taxi label), "Rumors", "Marie" and "Confusion" (for Clive Jarrett's Dynamite Records).

In 1983 Clive Jarrett produces his second album, "Trodding Through The Jungle", recorded at Channel One. Carlton then moves to the US and in 1984 releases on Greensleeves the famous "100 Weight Of Collie Weed" single and album of the same name, produced by Percy Chin & Hyman Wright. He never stopped touring and recording since, and is always in demand for one of his killer dubplates. In 1998 his massive hit "Rumours" is even revoiced by Bobby Digital as a combination with Grammy Award winner Shabba Ranks.

In 2004 The Lone Ranger introduces him to his crew, from France, the international music web agency T.I.M.E.C. and their unbeatable production duo - Grant Phabao recording a 100 new riddims in 4 years and Djouls gathering hundreds of thousands of visitors each month on their website www.parisdjs.com (launched with former Radio Nova programmer Loik Dury). Grant Phabao, The Lone Ranger and Carlton Livingston decide to join forces and produce together with T.I.M.E.C. their future recordings.

Things start with a bang when they release in 2006 a limited edition 12 inch, a cover of Dandy Livingston "(A Message To You) Rudie", made famous by The Specials. The single was a hit, played all over the world and sold out in a few weeks. Carlton went to to record more than 60 dubplates (!) on Grant Phabao's incredibly sounding "Rudie" riddim. The firt single, "Teenager In Love", a reggae/doo wop take on the Dion and the Belmonts hit from the 60s (written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman), was recorded during the same sessions as "Rudie", in November 2004 at T.I.M.E.C. studios in Paris with Grant Phabao at the controls AND producing the riddims. Two other tracks were recorded then, "Cry Tribulation" and "Running for my Life", the latter being licensed by french filmmaker Cedric Klapish for his 2008 hit movie "Paris".

Following the success of the riddim single, Carlton comes back to Paris and T.I.M.E.C. studios in december 2006 and records 4 new tracks with Grant Phabao, "Bridge of Life", "Cherry" (on the riddim used for Ty's rework of "Don't Watch That" on Big Dada/Paris DJs), "Still Lamenting" and "Heard It Before". He would be back in march and april 2008 to re-record "Still Lamenting" to a higher standard, and record new songs "The Life of a Don", "Jackie's Statement", "Could Be Bitter" and the counter-anthem "(Sing) Power To The People".

No meaning might have a meaning here. A certain lack of meaningfulness describes the nature of Tosca pretty well; on their equine record even more so.

Releasing an album of remixes of their most recent work stays in tradition with the Tosca modus operandi. There's been at least one remix album for each 'original' Tosca album to date. In the case of "No Hassle", Tosca’s 2009 longplayer, this might make even more sense than before, since "No Hassle" was an introspective work. "Pony" brings the more club-oriented face of Tosca to the forefront. To put it simply, Tosca, the project of the two Austrians, Richard Dofmeister and Rupert Huber, combines bass-heavy downbeat music with abstract soundscapes of found sounds and material from numerous studio sessions. When these recordings are handed over to remixers, everything changes; texture, dynamics, structures. Still, "Pony" is a true Tosca album; the sound signature of Dorfmeister and Huber cannot be superseded by a remix.

Let’s take a look at the remixers. Smith & Mudd, Steve Kotey and Pete Herbert are three London-based producers, whose musical credit-lines reach back to the 90's. Paul "Mudd" Murphy (with partner Ben Smith) delivers a 'classic downbeat' --what's called 'Balearic' these days --production of "Pony"’s opening track; but not the superficial kind that has given the genre a bad name. "Rather brilliantly subtle, like early Fila Brazillia", as Richard Dorfmeister states. Aimed straight for the dancefloor are Pete Herbert’s "Joe Si Ha (Reverso 68 Mix)" and Steve Koteys collaboration with brothers Lee on their "Elitsa" remix. All three versions share a musical heritage that points to the sound of London dance-archetypes such as the Idjut Boys or Faze Action. And of course there’s a connection to the various former acts and aliases of the remixers themselves: Bushflange, Chicken Lips or Akwaaba for example Clubmusic history lurks around each corner... Quite similar in sound to the London heads is Venetian remixer Bottin. His "Disco Spritzer" remix of "Elektra Bregenz" is, despite its name, more hip-swaying longdrink than appetizer. And Kalabrese, who, being from Zurich, would call that an Apéro, has made his "Oysters In May" into anything but a mere starter. This is more like a main course á la Henrik Schwarz, including some additional vocals from the young dj himself. Grant Phabao is a Parisian dj- and producer-legend, ever since first droppping his frenchified Rubba-Dub styles on the Pro-Zak Trax Label at the end of the 90's. When he's not doing Reggae takes on Tosca, he's busy mixing some riddims with the latest Q-Tip or the likes. His version of "Birthday" sounds like something hot off the press from Compass Point Studios in Nassau.

If you ask Nicola Conte for a remix, what you'll get is a proper re-interpretation of your music. While others would try to evoke such via sampling, the man from Bari takes his crew of handpicked musicians into the studio for a new recording. His jazzy reconstructions are always refreshingly unique like a custom fitted Italian suit. Rodney Hunter is a veteran member of the G-Stone family. His suprising version of "Rosa" is fairly soundtrack-ish. No looking for the perfect Disco beat this time, none of his trademark Rave/Funk groove workouts. The public get's to see another face of the the man who sometimes sounds like he's a lost member of the Stereo Mc's. The "Spirit Catcher Mix" by Belgians Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet of Tosca's "Joe Si Ha" is designed to be danced to and leaves nothing left to be desired. The Spirit Catcher sound is a sure bet - as long as you dig their electronic Disco / House take of course. To close the album, Tosca went a bit experimental. Besides giving their music to a handful of remixers, they also contracted a contemporary chamber music ensemble to record an adaptation of "Rosa". The two Tosca producers then took these recordings and re-edited them, resulting in a closing track by the Kuk String Quartet.

If, after listening to this elegantly sequenced collection of remixes and versions, you still long for a deeper meaning, take a good look at Markus Roessle’s horse photography. If, after that, you’re still filled with a desire for deeper meaning, you’re probably making too much of a hassle. Understand that Tosca is about 'the meaning of no meaning'. Free your mind and your pony will follow.
