Lexus Blondin Y Sus Afrocubanos present Afro Cubik

For his first appearance on the website, London-based French producer & compiler Lexus Blondin has put together an eclectic, yet very selected mix of Afro cuban jazz. This mix will have you travel back and forth from a pre-revolutionary Havana to a post war New York, a time when record producers were not afraid to think large. Their recipe for a different shade of Bebop? Reptilian brass sections, subtle arrangements written by monuments like Lalo Schiffrin or Chico O' Farril, coupled with the musicianship of talented soloists such as James Moody, Art Blakey, Machito or Cal Tjader. The result was a percussion heavy form of music with which jazz chords and improvisation found a new structure to play around. Four to the floor double bass, swirling trumpet solos, Hard Bop piano chords makes it a delight for Jazz dancers and sample seekers. Beware, this mix is highly explosive, handle with care!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Aloe Blacc

In 2010, Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III, also known as Aloe Blacc, released his second album, Good Things, on Stones Throw records. The album was produced by Jeff Dynamite and Leon Michels for Truth & Soul Productions (El Michels Affair, Bronx River Parkway, Lee Fields, etc.). It's also the year that the American soul singer, rapper and musician exploded worldwide with I Need A Dollar, the opening title track on the HBO series, How To Make It In America. Aloe Blacc's career had started at the end of the 90s, with Emanon, a hip hop duo with producer Exile, and features countless appearances and collaborations. Paris DJs honcho Djouls tried to scan the whole spectrum of his career for this selection (months in the making), presented here in collaboration with Stones Throw Records (thanks Alex!). Enjoy the jazz, reggae, soul, hip hop, latin and funk versatility of Aloe Blacc's vibes and never forget that the man is an amazing performer before everything else so don't hesitate to go an see him on stage!

DJ Manchild's Disco Dandia

We recently did a focus on Australian label HopeStreet Recordings, reviewing a bunch of 45s from The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, The Bombay Royale, The Cactus Channel and The Putbacks. Hope Street have been working with a couple of Melbourne's most widely travelled DJs and collectors, about getting some mixes together related to their releases, and asked Paris DJs to help spreading the good word. Here's the first one of those mixes, prepared with love by Ethan Hill aka DJ Manchild who's been sorting out and blending some amazing rarities of Bollywood music circa 1965-1985, all off original vinyl, to showcase the sounds that influence The Bombay Royale and the single Sote Sote Adhi Raat. We played this absolute killer Bolywood disco track in our end of the year Block Party 2011 mix and our Indian honcho Djouls is more than glad to have this special treat up on Paris DJs right on for Valentine's Day! There's also a video of DJ Manchild presenting his 12 favorite Bollywood records to check out… Yep this one's dedicated to all the lovers and music lovers out there. DJ Manchild and HopeStreet Recordings present: "DJ Manchild's Disco Dandia" - Twelve orginal vinyl artefacts from the Golden Years of Bollywood 1965-1985

In 2002 and 2003, Melbourne's DJ Manchild, record collector, funk aficionado and all round fun guy spent over a year travelling though India searching for the lost gold of 60's 70's and 80's Bollywood records. He returned with four crates of vinyl gleaned from the streets, market stalls and stores of Kolkata, Mumbai and Dehli and many smaller cities in between. Here he presents his favourite twelve records from that journey and the wild and exotic sounds inscribed on them.

After producing albums and hit singles with Studio One's legends The Lone Ranger, Carlton Livingston, The Jays, The Silvertones, Parisian dubmeister Grant Phabao was given the Jamaican stamp of approval of "the producer who brings back the original Lee Perry and King Tubby sounds with a modern twist". Phabao expanded his output with roots jamaican remixes for artists such as Alice Russell, Nostalgia 77 or Quantic (Tru Thoughts), Ty (Big Dada), George Clinton… and spectacular mashups & bootlegs: Cee-Lo, Q-Tip, Roots Manuva, Erykah Badu, Jurassic 5, Marvin Gaye, among others, were given the unique Grant Phabao treatment for extended dancefloor pleasure! He's now presenting his first live dub mixing experience with the help of long time collaborator DJ The Dreadless Soldier (aka Erik Rug), the GRANT PHABAO SOUL SYSTEM, a DJ set spiced up with hip hop, dub and a whole lot of echo. This is the volume two of their Dubtape series out of three and the duo is now available for booking thru Paris DJs!

The Real Tuesday Weld - Radio Clerkenwell Paris DJs Mix

The Real Tuesday Weld were formed by Stephen Coates in 1999 inspired by dreams of crooner Al Bowlly and the American actress Tuesday Weld. They're influenced by 1930s jazz, Serge Gainsbourg, Ennio Morricone and minimalist electronica and are known for a series of critically acclaimed albums, arts projects and award winning collaborations with film makers. We started spotting them on Paris DJs way back in 2005… and fast forward to 2012 we were glad to be able to interview Stephen last week (read it in english or in french), and managed to get a mix from him cooked especialy for Paris DJs. The Real Tuesday Weld has a new album out, Songs For The Last Werewolf, and Stephen Coates has also a new project and album out, Lazarus and The Plane Crash. We love his neo-retro 1930s/film noir soundtrack/Beatles vibe spiked with English humor, and can't wait to see the band on stage very soon: February 13th at the Comedy Club and february 15th at the Café de La Danse, both in Paris!

Funki Porcini - Accident And Emergence Mix

Ambient/Chill-Out/Downtempo/Eclectic Electronics master James Bradell a.k.a. Funki Porcini has quite a cult following thanks to his 5 albums/15-years long career on Ninja Tune. He's launched in december 2009 his own label, releasing since then no less than 2 albums and 8 singles. His latest album, One Day, has been released just a month ago on funkiporcini.bandcamp.com - and you can stream it entirely there. We got in touch with him last summer, and soon Funki Porcini put himself in a Paris DJs state of mind, and went digging in his crates for this gem of an electronic audio voyage called Accidents and Emergence.

We know a lot of people enjoyed the Jan Kohlmeyer Yuletide DJ Mix posted early december (very funky!), but that didn't mean we wouldn't also be there for our annual 'Wishing you a stupid Xmas' audio greetings. Every year you know you can count on Captain Détendu (the man from J.E.W.P.O.P.) to spice the Christmas selection with some eccentric carols and Hawaiian jingles. This year's mix is, as usual, full of surprises. We've been digging here, there and everywhere. Hope you'll have as mch fun listening to this one as we had cooking it. We had the chance to meet him last week in Paris, and even if we knew it while listening to his albums and mixes, we can assure you the man has got the vibe! Paris DJs Soundsystem - Pomp & Circumstance

This one is mainly a warm-up mix in black and white (hence the title and artwork), presenting contemporary and international mento, ska, reggae & dub with young blood and legends. Lee Scratch Perry's got the final and mystic word with his under-exposed last release Rise Again (superbly crafted by Bill Laswell, with Steven Bernstein on trumpet and Bernie Worrell on keys), a title which sounds like a symbol of his great renaissance. But it could also fit The Jolly Boys Great Expectation comeback, a band christened by hellraiser Errol Flynn himself while he was living in Jamaica. Both music and hair dressing connoisseurs will understand easily the play on words hidden in the title's mix. For the others well, they can write to Paris DJs and we'll answer…

Bio Ritmo - Salsa Pa’l Mundo

Did you pass on La Verdad, the latest Bio Ritmo album released at the end of the summer on Electric Cowbell Records? If that's the case, then you've missed the Salsa album of the year, no less. The only letdown of this fantastic & frantic record is its length - under 40 minutes - definitively too short, but explainable by the fact that it's also available on a (heavily recommended) vinyl. Rei Alvarez, one of the main forces of the group, prepared for Paris DJs a mix of his old vinyls, the only kind of records he's got... and a he's got a lot of it!. It's a selection of music that has influenced Bio Ritmo, which doesn't include many tracks from the awesome Fania Records catalog, but rather focuses on its shadows, smaller and independent Salsa music that was released during the 70's and 80's. The one-hour long resulting mix is as killer as the album, with lots of very rare stuff, And we're as honored to have Bio Ritmo onboard of the Paris DJs podcast, as they were to be featured in the latest, Latin issue of Wax Poetics! I think I've already said that, but get the album, you don't hear amazing Salsa with psychedelic hints of ethio jazz, afrobeat or dub that often!!

Radio Citizen - Express Brassmania

From electro-organic funktronica to jazz, soul & afro, Niko Schabel and friends a.k.a. Radio Citizen have already amazed us twice, in 2006 with Berlin Serengeti, and in 2010 with Hope and Despair (both on Ubiquity Records). Niko has been playing a lot live and improvising, with Radio Citizen, the Niko Schabel Quartet, the Express Brass Band and other bands from Germany. He cooked for Paris DJs this very nice brass band mix, with mostly live, unpublished recordings!

Jan Kohlmeyer - Yuletide DJ Mix

The Paris DJs German connection runs deep in time. Summer 2007 we were inviting Tobias Kirmayer from funk/jazz/afro new releases and reissues label Tramp Records - his Freestyle party mix is still available and has became one of our classics. When we saw he was releasing a Soul and Funk Chistmas compilation this year we couldn't pass on inviting him for our annual xmas mix. Tobias pointed us towards DJ Jan Kohlmeyer from the wild, hot & sexy funk Disco Fantastique parties in Wuerzburg. During 10 years of Disco Fantastique the legendary Christmas parties have become tradition. Being probably unique in Germany, every December Jan Kohlmeyer played several hours of the club night only and exclusively funk and soul Christmas titles all from 45 or vinyl longplayers. He's the one responsible for the selection on the Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party compilation out now on Tramp Records, and of course this companion Yuletide Mix!

Al Kent's 60 Minutes French Kiss

Al Kent's reputation for re-editing Disco tracks is just massive and we're VERY proud to offer this exclusive mix. The man has been releasing tons of good stuff in the last ten years, on his on Million Dollar Disco label, on Barely Breaking Even (BBE Records - check his Disco Love compilations), or under his own name or as the Million Dollar Orchestra… He's just one of the Disco kings out there today, so when we stumbled upon the details for this upcoming 5-CD boxset release, The Best of Disco Demands - A Collection Of Rare 1970s Dance Music, which looks like an absolute must-have for Disco lovers, we contacted BBE right away and thanks to their PR girl we managed to get in touch with Al Kent who's knocked down this fantastic Disco mix for the Paris DJs listeners who'll have a perfect one hour mixed selection for their end of the year private parties… The boxest itself (also available as two double vinyls LPs) will be released late january 2012, and our in-depth review should be published very soon (we're eagerly waiting for our promo copy)…

Between his releases under the Nostalgia 77 name (with a fourth album released earlier this year on Tru Thoughts Recordings, The Sleepwalking Society), collaborative projects such as the afro-jazz of Skeletons, the Afro-Latin of The Rhythmagic Orchestra, or the Funk-Rock of The Broken Keys, producing music for Alice Russell, Lizzy Parks, his own UK jazz label Impossible Ark Records… and a plethora of remixes, Benedic Lamdin just seems unstoppable. He's at the forefront of today's Jazz musicians in the UK while always exploring new styles. His new album is empowered with overtones of blues and folk, while the remixes available with its singles are digging into the shallows of contemporary electronica. We're really proud of having him aboard the Paris DJs podcast with this exclusive 45mn Relics mix of music that he has been recently working on, it's the third in the series so don't hesitate to go hunting for the previous ones.

When we stumbled upon the World's Funkiest Covers compilation just released on US label Cultures of Soul Records, we exclaimed: "Damn! Those cats have really been Molesting Laura the Paris DJs way!!". Their selection, available on CD and glorious vinyl, carefully selected by DJ Deano Sounds, features indeed some of the funkiest covers from around the world and throughout time, from deep funk to latin soul, hard salsa, soul, afro beat, and even cumbia. We couldn't pass on the opportunity to invite the label to do a special Molesting Laura mix and they nailed it for real!! Il Cinema Secondo Calibro 35

Adesso parliamo italiano… from our strong italian connection comes Calibro 35's founder and mastermind Tommaso Colliva. Tommaso explains in our exclusive interview that he's been a diehard italian soundtrack collector since he was a teen. Then he had the fine idea to bring together great italian musicians and play covers from the maestri (Gianni Ferrio, Bruno Nicolai, Ennio Morricone, etc.) as well as writing compositions inspired by these mentors. The funkiest italian act Calibro 35 was born. For Il cinema secondo Calibro 35 (cinema according to Calibro 35), he's selected his favorite tracks ever to cook the ultimate polizieschi (italian noir movie) mix and unveiled the influences and backgound of Calibro 35's sound. As the famous joke says, "Italians do it better", and it's never been so true!
