Nigerian Boogie & Disco Special at Superfly Records | Comments: 0

We are back this week with a very special event: the lond awaited release of the LAGOS DISCO INFERNO compilation. This is an incredible selection of obscure Disco tracks from the Nigerian 70s dance scene and the result of multiple, ultimate digging expeditions to Nigeria, check voodoofunk.com for information on the story behind this release. If you are into the independant Disco sound, get your copy now as this music simply cannot be found anywhere else. To coincide with this release, we have also done our homework and decided to put together an incredible selection of obscure Afro Disco and Nigerian Boogie records. Collectors be quick as it does not get much more obscure than this and we only have one copy of each title up for grabs right now. And if you like the 80s Boogie sound check our new Nigerian Boogie Back mix on ParisDJs.com. Happy hunting!

Various - Lagos Disco Inferno - vinyl LPs available march 16th at Superfly Records! | Comments: 0

Lagos Disco Inferno
Various - Lagos Disco Inferno
(CD/2xLP) Academy LPs, 2010-03-16

Some call it Disco, some call it Boogie, Academy LPs call it the LAGOS DISCO INFERNO: 12 smokin' rarities straight from Nigeria, dating back to '76-82, compiled by Frank Gossner< (aka DJ FRANC O, SOULPUSHER) of VOODOO FUNK fame. Surprisingly familiar, yet intriguinly foreign, these tracks sound just as fresh today as they did 30+ years ago. The record is rife with horns, moog and bells and whistles to keep you up all night. Great liner notes by Dean Disi (Journalist and former Executive of TYC Records, Lagos) and a special message from extreme record hunter Damian Iwuagwu (Lagos). Following in the footsteps of amazing African re-issues of late such as OFEGE (ACADEMY LPS), PAX NICHOLAS and the NETTY FAMILY (DAPTONE), GHANA SPECIAL (SOUNDWAY), this album stands alone as the first compilation to focus on African Disco. But make no mistake, you won't hear any cheesy strings of nasty Roland Synths. This is straight up tough NIGERIAN DISCO FUNK!

24-Carat Black - Gone: The Promises Of Yesterday - January 2010 album of the month for Superfly Records! | Comments: 0

24-Carat Black Gone The Promises Of Yesterday
24-Carat Black - Gone: The Promises Of Yesterday
(CD/LP) Numero Group NUM025, 2009-07-28

Classically trained Detroit arranger Dale Warren got his start with the famed Motown label and, from the late 60s throughout the early 70s, composed the majority of string scores for soul artists on Stax Records (arranging for such artists as Billy Eckstine, Eddie Floyd, Isaac Hayes, Albert King, and the Staple Singers, among others). During this time, Warren befriended an up-and-coming Cincinnati soul outfit called the Ditalians. After he convinced them to change their name to 24-Carat Black, he took them under his wing - both composing and producing their lone album, 1973's Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth, a conceptual work that focused on life in the inner city.
when Stax finally shuttered in 1975, and for 35 years, the sketches for 24-Carat Black's sophomore release hibernated in keyboardist and session engineer Bruce Thompson's basement below the south side of Chicago. Abandoned by Warren when the studio bill darkened his mailbox, the tapes, over decades, had fallen into soggy disrepair, useless save for the six tracks featured on this release.

Drink party with Kon & Amir yesterday at the Superfly Records store | Comments: 0

Our friends Soulist and Freeworker from the What The Funk crew called us on monday and offered to bring Kon & Amir and some selected friends to the store for a drink (thanks to them!). We only announced the 'event' at the end of the afternoon on Paris DJs and on our facebook page and a few hours later the shop was packed with clients, fans, DJs, and of course the legendary beat-diggers from brooklyn Kon & Amir. Both guys are 100% cool and friendly and we were very glad to have them visiting us!!

Here are a few pictures taken by yours truly - I'm no real photographer so don't be harsh... and see you soon at the store!
