Lee Fields - Faithful Man - out on Truth & Soul Records

Lee Fields Faithful Man
Lee Fields - Faithful Man
(CD/LP) Truth & Soul Records TS018, 2012-03-13

We've been spreading the Lee Fields gospel a lot those recent years. His latest album, My World, was selected in our Best of 2009 annual summary and even announced the instrumental version of that same album. We've featured a Lee Fields Mega Mix by Truth & Soul Records' alumnus DJ Akalepse. We've ordered physical LPs from the label for the Superfly Record Store when Djouls was still a partner. OK we passed on the reissues of his older stuff but we never got copies anyway so it would have been telling without knowning... And finally we've podcasted the bluesy and souful new single You're The Kind Of Girl to some thousands of listeners. That's why when their French distributor, Differ-ant, offered to send us the new album, Faithful Man, we kinda jumped and hit the roof. so what's the verdict? Is that another fantastic LP aiming at the ladies' hearts? Absolutely! The more you'll play it, the more in love you'll be with this soothing soul and heart-wrenching ballads. The title track, Faithful Man, even reaches the heights of James Brown's classic It's A Man's World and will hopefully make it for the next single to be extracted from this treasure of an album.

Deep Jazz - The Meeting - out on Perfect Toy Records

Deep Jazz The Meeting
Deep Jazz - The Meeting
(CD/Digital) Perfect Toy Records PT040, 2012-03-12

Acoustic bass player Jerker Kluge has appeared a few times before on Paris DJs with projects such as The Hi-Fly Orchestra, Hipnosis or Bad Jazz Troupe. This is his second album as Deep Jazz, and every bit as spiritual and soulful as the first one. Two beautiful covers are included, Rahsaan Roland Kirk's Spirits Up Above and Freddie Hubbard's Little Sunflower, along with 8 originals. If you're not a crazy digger looking for obscure recordings, but instead more open-minded and interested in what your contemporaries are expressing, this neo-classic retro spiritual jazz album is quite a treat, sounding like classic Impulse!/Blue Note material from the 60s!

Various - Movements 4 - out on Tramp Records

Various - Movements 4
(CD/2LP) Tramp Records TR-9015, 2012-03-12

Just like with some the best Paris DJs mixes, some selections take a long time to gather. This 4th volume in the Movements series happens 7 years after the first one and took Tramp records founder Tobias Kirmayer two years to complete, chasing lost treasures and privates pressings of funk, soul and jazz tracks all over the globe. So don't expect familiar names, semi-hits or any kind of already-compiled-over-and-there kind of grooves, this is real diggin' business, each track to be found here has been carefully brought back to life, thoroughly annoted and properly referenced with full-color label scans and band photos. Most intense findings include Carl Westmoreland stunning early 70s political burner Shakers and Movers, Iris Bell's funky piano on the aplty titled Honky Games, the Gershwin classic Summertime covered by Polish Old Metropolitan Band, the irresistible and stamping unedited Discotheque Soul from blind drummer and piano player Ricky Williams, and the amazing heavy funk of I Don't Think We Are Going Back Again by The Soul Brothers Inc. that was already available on The Story of The Soul Brothers Inc. anthology released on Tramp Records in 2010. A real treat for music lovers in search of discoveries to be released march 12th 2012.

The Barr Brothers - The Barr Brothers - out on Secret City Records

The Barr Brothers
The Barr Brothers - The Barr Brothers
(CD/2LP/Digital) Secret City Records SCR021, 2011-09-27

Well we've been telling you about The Barr Brother for a long time now. First with their former jam/jazz trio The Slip, who released one of the best albums of 2002, of 2003, of 2004, and of 2006. Then in 2008 we pointed out Brad Barr's solo album as one of the bests of 2008. And finally, we recently fell for their rock band Surprise Me Mr. Davis (with Nathan Moore and Marco Benevento). The album The Barr Brothers released in the USA last year is another gem in their ever-expanding discography. Those guys are the real Americana from today, with hints of blues and African rhythms, and they are coming to Europe next month with dates announced in France and England!! We sincerily hope to see you at the Café de la Danse in Paris on April 20th!

Fringe Character - Demo / Promo

Fringe Character Demo Promo
Fringe Character - Demo / Promo
(promo cD) self-released, 2011

Ben Sholl from Madison, USA, alias Fringe Character contacted us after we published the awesome Il Cinema Secondo Calibro 35 mix, telling us how much he loved our podcasts. We checked out some of his productions, and were quite surprised with the quality of the jazzy/hip hop breakbeats to be found on this promo CD (and on his soundcloud page). Stumbling upon that kind of demo doesn't happen often and we would love how Fringe Character productions would sound with more original songs in hand... The man might be the next Bonobo and would have easily fitted in Ninja Tune's catalog from a few years ago (before their new rock/bass direction aiming for UK kids).

Deep Schrott - One / Plays Dylan & Eisler
(CDs/Digital) Poise Records, 2010-03-12 / 2012-02-03

Labelled as the first and only bass saxophone quartet in the universe, Deep Schrott are amazing indeed. Forget everything you ever heard about wind or brass ensembles. Here's the Real Heavy Metal!, do they write on their website. Their debut album from 2010, One gathers absolutely unique takes on Fleetwood Mac's Oh Well, The Beatles's Helter Skelter, a medley of King Crimson compositions, Slipknot's Left Behind, Led Zeppelin's Black Dog and Stairway To Heaven and finally Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out Of My Head. Enough reasons to buy this CD asap in our humble opinion... and we won't miss playing some of those in upcoming Molesting Laura mixes! It was high time to write a few words about this band since they've just released a second (live) album, Plays Dylan & Eisler, with no less than 9 Bob Dylan covers. This is our discovery of the month, we never heard anything like this before, something between classical jazz, mainstream pop and heavy brass earthquakes!

Burnt Friedman - Bokoboko - out on Nonplace Records

Burnt Friedman Bokoboko
Burnt Friedman - Bokoboko
(CD/2LP/Digital) Nonplace NON33, 2012-02-03

You won't find any of the 4 exclusive tracks from the Zen' Aku 12 inch released last summer in this new album, but you'll get 10 new instrumentals, recorded and mixed in Burnt Friedman's Berlin studio during the past three years. The sound is mesmerizing, with prepared oil barrels/steel drums, all kinds of wood and metal percussion, gongs, monochord, a home-made rubber-band guitar, organ, synthesizer, electric guitar and some appearances of wind instruments, bass and sarod, a traditional Indian string instrument. The music itself is hard to describe, the only comparisons that comes to mind are from Burnt Friedman's previous albums with Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit, this entirely instrumental recording is so hard to pinpoint to existing genres of music, it literally fits its 'Nonplace' label! This is jazz, world music, krautrock, with a 21st Century Sun Ra spirit. Try it if you're looking for something different.

Miles Davis meets DJ Logic meets Grant Phabao on Animation's Agemo (out on Rare Noise Records)

Animation Agemo
Animation - Agemo
(2CD/Digital) Rare Noise Records RNR018, 2011-11-28

Disc 1 of Agemo, focusing on the emotional impact of change through technology, is a 3D60 mix of the Animation’s previous release, Asiento (RNR017), which saw Bob Belden’s seminal Jazz+drum’n bass band interpret Miles DavisBitches Brew. This exclusive and innovative mixing process (already witnessed on The Orb + David Gilmour’s Metallic Spheres), devised and honed by Mike Brady, Ian Thompson and Youth (3d60.co.uk), focuses on both increasing the dynamic range (20db!) of the music and providing a 3-dimensional HEADPHONE listening experience, the likes of which most users will never have had experience before. Disc 2 of Agemo, focusing on the emotional impact of change through creativity is a Remix of the original Asiento. The original six tracks, "Pharaoh’s Dance", "Bitches Brew", "John McLaughlin", "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down", "Spanish Key" and "Sanctuary" are taken on by absolute masters of their craft, in order Bill Laswell, DJ Logic and Grant Phabao, Youth (producer of The Verve and Paul McCartney), Gaudi, Fanu and Joaquim "Joe" Claussell, as they reconstruct and reinterpret the original material to extract the essence of what Bitches Brew means to them - spacing from Dub to Funk to Breakbeats to Dancefloor and r’n’b. Asiento was an interpretation of Miles Davis’ seminal work, Bitches Brew. Agemo takes Asiento and "folds" it onto itself . A Dream within a Dream.
