DJ Food - The Search Engine - out on Ninja Tune

DJ Food The Search Engine
DJ Food - The Search Engine
(CD/Digital) Ninja Tune ZENCD176/ZENDNL176, 2012-01-23

Eleven years after the last DJ Food album release (Kaleidoscope), Strictly Kev and various friends, associates and like-minded collaborators return with a new full-length. The Search Engine distills the best parts from three EP’s worth of material into a continuous 56 minute album of unbridled creativity and laser-sharp focus. Collaborations abound in the form of vocal appearances from Natural Self (aka Nathaniel Pearn), JG Thirlwell (Foetus, Steroid Maximus etc.) and The The's Matt Johnson. The latter reprises his vocal on a cover of his own track GIANT, nearly thirty years after its first release. Musical hook-ups include 2econd Class Citizen, who trades sample-attacks with Strictly for the suite of nine tracks that make up the 11 minute Magpie Music. Dr Rubberfunk lends his drumming skills to the opening track and old DJ Food partner PC and Solid Steel's DK add their own ingredients to the mix. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all to those who associate the DJ Food name with the early 90s Jazz Brakes records is just how heavy The Search Engine is. Styled as a kind of psychedelic rock album made with samplers, Strictly Kev has not been afraid the frug the fuck out, with thundering drum work and fuzz bass perhaps the central muscial signature of the work.

Jazzanova - Upside Down - out on Sonar Kollektiv

Jazzanova Upside Down
Jazzanova - Upside Down
(CD/Digital) Sonar Kollektiv SK232, 2012-01-23

From the left or the right side? Straight ahead or upside down? No matter how you look at it - but it seems to be about time that all the remixes for Jazzanova that have been done over the last few years need to be bundled up in a nice big shiny package. After the first collection of remixes from 2003 (Remixed, JCR040-2) now's the turn for Upside Down, some of dance music finest key figures' interpretations of selected Jazzanova tunes from the last eight years. And be assured, the line-up is as massive as the Berlin's quintet worldwide reputation. From fellow Berliner Henrik Schwarz, Ye:Solar and Âme to Atjazz and Mr. Scruff from the UK, Motor City Drum Ensemble from Cologne, Glasgow's Midnight Mauraders and Soldiers Of House from Pretoria (South Africa) this is a top notch international heavy weight affair. Sonar Kollektiv will kick off with two 12 inches including new remixes by amazing artists, such as Alex Barck, Dima Studitsky, Manuel Tur & Dplay and Motor City Drum Ensemble (in stores on 28th of november, CD is coming end of January 2012).

Wiley - Evolve Or Be Extinct - out on Big Dada

Wiley Evolve Or Be Extinct
Wiley - Evolve Or Be Extinct
(2LP/CD/Digital) Big Dada BD187, 2012-01-19

What is the true mark of the wayward genius of Wiley? Is it that, less than six months after the release of his last full album, 100% Publishing, he has another record all set for release? Is it that he has insisted that it is released on his birthday, Thursday January 19th 2012? Or that he initially refused to release a single from it? That he has made so much music that his fans will receive two CDs, the second with at least eight further tracks on it? Or even that one track on the album has no music (Customs)? No, it's not any of these. It's that we can say, without fear of contradiction (or without much fear), that Evolve Or Be Extinct is the best album (so far!) of this unique artist's career. Dark, funny, wild and exhilarating, this is a record which shows just what Wiley is capable of when he forgets the minutiae of recording contracts and concentrates on the many weird and wonderful facets of his life…

King Porter Stomp - Let It All Out - out on Comm:UNITY Sounds

King Porter Stomp Let It All Out
King Porter Stomp - Let It All Out (Limited Edition EP)
(CD/Digital) Comm:UNITY Sounds, 2012-01-23

'Let It All Out' is a limited EP edition and a new release for King Porter Stomp, a truly original band from Brighton, UK. This seven-piece ensemble delivers a strongly compelling blend of funk, ska, hip-hop and afrobeat, personified by its charismatic leader MC Jonezy. The man really toasts, with a style of his own that mixes power, rage and melancholy in a single voice. King Porter Stomp’ first album (Poison The Beat, Comm:UNITY Sounds, 2008) got rave reviews in UK and was followed in 2011 by a dub version EP, Antidote Dub. Meantime, with their intense live performances at big festivals, it became obvious that King Porter Stomp was killing it, both on stage and in the studio. This EP is a perfect candy to wait for their eagerly awaited second album. It's also a great fusion of the band's ingredients: political awareness, solid lyrics, smooth grooves with superb horn arrangements, afrobeat and rocksteady glints.

Will Bernard Trio - Outdoor Living - out now on Dreck to Disk Records

Will Bernard Outdoor Living
Will Bernard Trio - Outdoor Living
(CD/Digital) Dreck To Disk Records, 2011-12-01

A Will Bernard record is never disappointing. This brand new release, his second as a New York resident, makes no exception. Last time in 2008 we left Will with Blue Plate Special, a true quartet killer record loaded with juicy grooves — with John Medeski on keys and his longtime friend Stanton Moore on drums. Outdoor Living sees the guitarist coming back to the stainless trio formula: Simon Lott is on drums and Wil Blades on Hammond B3. Will Bernard's style has never been so concise, so plain and so apparently simple: a kind of quiet certitude of his own talent that doesn't need to show anything spectacular (the gorgeous Point Blank for instance). Soul-jazz compositions are still the core of Will's music on this record, with blues, dub echoes and psychedelic splinters now and then. Will has the great elegance to leave a lot of room to Lott and Blades - the latter has composed the heavy tune Squeaky Chug Chug. Together they form a real band and this ability to capture the essence of the groove suggests for sure that the best is yet to come. Will was kind enough to answer a few questions. Read the answers here.

Julien Dyne - Glimpse

Following on from the success of 2009's Pins and Digits, Julien Dyne announces the release of his second full length album Glimpse. Stylistically a continuation of the futuristic elements hinted at on Pins and Digits, Glimpse offers studies in shimmering melodies, woozy beds of rich harmonic sounds that pulsate over thick percussive backdrops. Featuring the vocal talents of She's So Rad, Ladi 6, Parks, Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle) and Claire Duncan (Dear Time's Waste) this record contains elements of soul and indie vocals against a backdrop of futuristic Hip Hop beats. Picked up by Japanese boutique label Wonderful Noise and UK heavy weights BBE 2009s Pins and Digits received worldwide exposure from BBC DJ's Gilles Peterson and Benji B reaching both DJ's 'top 100' lists for that year. Glimpse offers to raise the bar higher again, moving further into exploratory electronic forays and deeper into hazy beatscapes.

Kinny - Big Fat Liar - out on Tru Thoughts

Kinny Big Fat Liar
Kinny - Big Fat Liar
(Digital Single) Tru Thoughts TRUDD 036, 2012-01-16

Big Fat Liar, out as a digital single on 16th January 2012, is the first taste of Kinny's stunning second solo album, Can't Kill A Dame With Soul, which follows in February. An opera chanteuse turned singer-songwriter, Kinny's lifelong passion for reggae, jazz and soul intertwines with her classical training for a truly unique and potent style. The warm, immersive and soulful soundscape created by Norwegian producer/musician duo Souldrop (who also produced two tracks on her first album) provides the perfect cocoon for Kinny's crystal-edged voice, the eclectic sonic palette ranging organically from big bassy beats and keys to acoustic instrumentation and percussion. Announcing Kinny's emphatic return with a big fat beat, Big Fat Liar exemplifies her more fiery and dancefloor-orientated side, and is certain to soundtrack many a night out. Bonus tracks come in the form of the more languid and laid-back groove of album track You From This Sting and an exclusive unplugged version of Water For Chocolate - the original, which appeared on her debut solo album Idle Forest Of Chit Chat, was the first track she ever made with Souldrop, planting the seeds for the flourishing creative partnership you hear on the new record.
