Loik - Afro Diggin' | Comments: 0

Loik Afro DigginBob Pinodo, Rex Lawson, Orlando Julius, Tony Grey, the Opamanbuo International Band Of Ghana... All those are really rare records coming straight from Africa, so clicks and background noise are numerous, even with all the love we gave them. But all those songs need to be rediscovered, and often vinyl is the only testimony left. So let's hope you'll enjoy the ride - and don't worry there are more to come... (Loik)

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Sleep
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Sleep of Oldominion
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-06-30

If you were a hip-hop emcee who can spit lightening fast rhymes, would you call yourself Sleep? One of the founding members of the Northwest hip-hop crew Oldominion, Sleep is a Mexican emcee with rapid flows, superb breath control, and introspective rhymes. His name was inspired by a line in a Nas song (I never sleep because sleep is the cousin of death). He's totally one for beat conoisseurs and lyric addicts. His rapping is fast and complex, meter and flow changing mid-phrase, but always on time. If you're into Tonedeff, Hyeroglyphics, Del Da funky Homosapien, The Pharcyde, etc., it should definitively be your thing!

On the news front, Sleep's released today his third album, Hesitation Wounds, on Strange Famous Records, a new one in a series of 'must buy' records for all hip hop lovers, which include the fantastic Christopher from 2005 and the Combination Lock marvel from 2007 with Zelly Rock. And I'm not even talking about his Chicharones project with Josh Martinez here - the latter being the subject of an another special hip hop podcast coming to boom your earphones this summer...

Biography :
Classically trained musician Sneaky realised the need to search for his own musical identity at a very young age. After many years of formal training on cello and double bass, and the completion of a music degree in his hometown of Manchester, Sneaky became involved with forward thinking club nights Headfunk and Eardrum alongside a young drummer James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco) and resident DJs Mr Scruff, Andy Votel and Mark Rae. By 1997 Sneaky was heavily involved with Mark Rae's Manchester based label Grand Central as a live session musician touring extensively around Europe and Australia with Rae & Christian.

A session with fellow Mancunian, Mr Scruff, in 1999 produced the cheeky dance-floor classic "Get a Move On" and the following year Sneaky formed Fingathing with fellow R&C band member and turntablist Peter Parker, after jamming together in the downtime of the R&C rehearsals.

7 years of worldwide touring, 3 albums, several singles and EPs released through Grand Central and Ninja Tune, Sneaky is now itching to make his solo mark.

Sneaky will perform at The Big Chill 2009.

Souleance is the result of the partnership between the talented electronic hip hop beatmaker/producer Fulgeance and Paris DJs resident Soulist, who's been organizing incredibly groovy What The Funk events for 6 years now in Paris with his partner Freeworker… Souleance is really a mixture of Soulist's organic influences, spirituality and samples from live instruments, and Fulgeance producer's know how and malice, deep beats plus geek attitude towards technology. Their freshly sounding first 12 inch Le Monde EP has just been released on the English label First Word Records, combining newest tendencies of beats music and best urban music traditions - as in this showcase mix - a perfect introduction to the Souleance sound!

Paris DJs Soundsystem Do The Tighten Up
Paris DJs Soundsystem - Do The Tighten Up!
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-06-11

Tighten Up was a summer 1968 number one R&B and pop hit single by Archie Bell & the Drells from Houston, Texas. It sold a million copies by May 1968. The song described an accompanying dance that the band had invented, also called the Tighten Up. It's one of the most addictive early funk tracks ever, and has been covered and played by everyone from Maceo Parker to The Bamboos since then. Here's a 30mn blended selection of our favourite funk and latin versions...

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Hypnotic Brass Ensemble | Comments: 2

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-05-29

This Hypnotic Brass Ensemble blew my mind the first time I heard them. I had seen some videos on YouTube but was finally able to grab two copy of their War/Mercury 10 inch at a local record store (thank you to the kind people selling Jazz and World @ Gibert Joseph in Paris!)... The spare one went into the hands of Pierre from Souljazz Orchestra who got to see them onstage a few days after, opening for Mos Def in Amsterdam. He told me they totally stole the show, which I'm sure they did! Listening to their rare self-released albums (on CDR you can buy at their shows) or concert that are circulating on the Internet (you gotta check the one with Tony Allen!) can only mean one thing: the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is currently one of the few killer live bands out there!! They'll be playing next Wednesday in Paris at the New Morning and we have 10 tickets to offer - be there or be square!

DustyTape Piano Soul and Salsa Con Mucho Gusto Vol 3
DustyTape - Piano, Soul & Salsa - Con Mucho Gusto Vol.3
(MP3 Podcast on www.

Tracklisting :

01. Tony Pabon Y La Protesta - El Sol No Brilla
(from 'On The Right Track' album, 1972 / Rico)

02. Pete Rodriguez / Louie Ramirez - Evil Ways
(from 'El Barrio - Sounds From The Spanish Harlem Streets' compilation, 2007 / Fania)

03. Bantous Jazz - Wachi Wara
(from 'The Shrine Presents Afrobeat' compilation, 2000 / Ocho)
Africa Rules!

04. La Fantastica - Las Nenas
(from '2001' album, 197? / Mericana)

05. Ricardo Marrero & The Group - Babalonia
(from 'A Taste' album, 1976 / TSG)

06. Les Frères Dejean - Yoyo
(from 'L'Univers' album, 1979 / Macaya)

07. Eddie Palmieri & Cheo Feliciano - Busca lo Tuyo
(from 'Too Much' album, 2002 / Vaya)

08. The New York Latin Scene with Sonny Bravo - Work your Show
(from 'You Gotta Turn Me On' album, 1968 / Columbia)

09. Bronx River Parkway - Mi Corazon
(from 'San Sebastian 152' album, 2008 / Truth & Soul)

10. Joey Pastrana And His Orchestra - Tristeza
(from 'Don Pastrana' album, 1972 / Parmazo)

11. Harry Fraticelli y Los Barbarians - Te Agradezco El Consejo
(from 'Por El Libro' album, 1973 / 4 Points)

12. Fausto rey - El Mensajero del Amor
(from 'Latino' album, 197? / 4 Points)

Paris DJs Soundsystem Nearly Shadow
Paris DJs Soundsystem - Nearly Shadow
(MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2009-05-23

We've been cooking this mix for a long time, selecting its pieces slowly, one by one... The idea was to collect tracks that were obviously or not-so-obviously influenced by Dj Shadow's masterpiece and first album (on the defunct Mo' Wax label), Endtroducing. Some names spring to mind instantly, like Rjd2 (featured here), but we've tried to dig into many places, from the forgotten -DJ Bias of Lewis Parker fame, J-Walk who's second album will happen soon on Peacefrog, Manitoba now called Caribou-, to the unknown in Europe -Mnemotrauma, Joe Beats from Non Prophets who we had picked up for our This Is The New Hip Hop Thing CD compilation- and even the bigger names -Gnarls Barkley-. No Blockhead, no Wax Taylor, no DJ Cam, no UNKLE, no Diplo, no Aim... There surely are many other artists who've given props to that first Dj Shadow album and if you've got suggestions for a second volume don't hesitate to leave a comment!

After the Launch party album issued in 2003 by french label Mobil-Home Recordings, and the Turn Me On/Bahia 7 inch out on Freddy Fresh' Howlin' label the same year, our compatriot Azaxx just released a cool latin/electronics/breaks second album, on Brighton's finest Tru Thoughts Recordings. We wanted to invite him earlier this year but time flies by so fast... Anyway here's a selection of tracks and influences that have inspired the man, melted with a few taken from his album The Exotic Delight Bay. Expect everything from old mambo to breaks, jazz, liquid funk, rare groove, broken beat, clubby hooks and more dancefloor goodies...
